  • Direct torque control(DTC) of induction machines is known to offer fast instantaneous torque and flux control with a simple control structure. However, this scheme has two major disadvantageous, namely, a variable inverter switching frequency and a high torque ripple. These problems occur due to the use of hysteresis comparators in conventional DTC schemes, particularly in controlling the output torque. This paper reviews the utilization of constant frequency torque controllers (CFTC) in DTC to solve these problems while retaining the simple control structure of DTC. Some extensions of the work in utilizing a CFTC will be carried out in this paper which can further reduce the torque ripple. This is particularly useful for a system which has a limited/low sampling frequency. The feasibility of a CFTC with an extended carrier frequency in minimizing the torque ripple is verified through experimental results.

  • The Auto-synchronizer is essential equipment for synchronizing a generator to the power system. It is performing that measurement of the magnitude, frequency and phase of the voltage signal of the power system and generator. It is important to select the appropriate measurement algorithm for preventing various problem such as mechanical stress and Electrical problem. Teager Energy Operator(TEO) and Discrete separation algorithm(DESA) is measurable the instantaneous parameters of a sine wave using 5 samples and can be measured at a fast and with a simple operation. Therefore it has many advantages in measuring the parameters. In this paper, it confirmed measurement results using matlab simulations when there are synchronized in order of frequency, magnitude. Also it presented methods using digital filters and sample intervals to improve accuracy.

  • This paper describes analysis and experimental characterization of low speed direct drive fractional slot concentrated winding (FSCW) surface permanent magnet synchronous motor (SPMSM) with consequent pole (CP) rotor, for which studies have been recently performed. The proposed motor, which consists of 30 poles and 36 slots, is analyzed and characterized by extensive 2D finite element analysis (FEA) and together with 3D FEA for an appropriate PM overhang length design. The validity of the analysis is confirmed by the corresponding experiments which fully characterize the proposed motor with excellent agreement between the FEA and the experiments. Thermal stability is also experimentally examined to determine continuous operating points and instantaneous operating points of the proposed motor. It is highly expected that the proposed motor is applicable for low speed direct drive applications.

  • This study was performed by experiments with ASTM's apparatus for determination of autoignition temperature to obtain autoignition characteristics of 1-Heptene, 2-Heptene and 3-Heptene, respectively. As results, minimum autoignition temperatures (MAIT) of 1-Heptene, 2-Heptene and 3-Heptene were 246$^{\circ}C$, 248$^{\circ}C$ and 254$^{\circ}C$, respectively and each dropping volume of these temperatures was 0.25$m\ell$, 0.20$m\ell$ and 0.20$m\ell$. Instantaneous ignition temperatures measured at each dropping volume of Heptene were 371$^{\circ}C$, 357$^{\circ}C$ and 342$^{\circ}C$, respectively. Relation ignition delay time with ignition temperature at minimum autoignition temperature agreed well with Semenov's equation, and the values of apparent activation energy from this equation were 47Kca1/mo1 for 1-Heptene, 35Kca1/mo1 for 2-Heptene and 29Kca1/mo1 for 3-Heptene. It was found that the values of apparent activation energy decreased as the position of double bond changed from end to center in C-C chain.

  • The assessment of PIV to measure the mean velocity and turbulence was carried out over a train of fixed two-dimensional dunes. The agreement between the PIV and LDV is good enough even in regions of flow reversals and high shear. Though limited in the wall normal direction field-of-view, PIV provides instantaneous flow fields, which reveal the complex nature of flow over dunes, as well as more sophisticated analyses such as two-point space correlation and quadrant analysis with a reasonable accuracy The present study is expected to be directly applied to more complex flow such as sediment transport.

  • Turbulence properties of a cylinder wake (d=10 mm) have been investigated with a new volume PTV algorithm. The measurement system consists of two-high-cameras(1 $k{\times}1$ k), a Nd-Yag laser and a host computer. A fitness function representing three-dimensional coherency has been adopted to sort out spurious vectors. A hybrid fitness function representing the relations between the fitness and the three-dimensional shortest distances constructed by the two collinears of the two cameras has been also adopted. The constructed algorithm has been employed for the measurements of the cylinder wakes. The Reynolds numbers tested in this paper are 360, 540, 720, 900, 1080 and 1260. More than 10,000 instantaneous 3D vectors have been obtained by the constructed system. The volumetric distributions of the turbulence intensities (for u', v', w') indicate that clearly different patterns for all Reynolds numbers and imply that a regular pattern (like a similarity rule) for the turbulent properties exists.

  • Background: After the Fukushima accident, the importance of hazard analysis for extreme external events was raised. Methods: To analyze typhoon-induced hazards, which are one of the significant disasters of East Asian countries, a statistical analysis using the extreme value theory, which is a method for estimating the annual exceedance frequency of a rare event, was conducted for an estimation of the occurrence intervals or hazard levels. For the four meteorological variables, maximum wind speed, instantaneous wind speed, hourly precipitation, and daily precipitation, the parameters of the predictive extreme value theory models were estimated. Results: The 100-year return levels for each variable were predicted using the developed models and compared with previously reported values. It was also found that there exist significant long-term climate changes of wind speed and precipitation. Conclusion: A fragility analysis should be conducted to ensure the safety levels of a nuclear power plant for high levels of wind speed and precipitation, which exceed the results of a previous analysis.

  • A panoramic-PIV technique is employed to characterize the travelling tip vortices and the profile of oil-water Interface in the tandem fence arrangement. Instantaneous as well as time-averaged velocity profiles of the water layer close to the interface were obtained to evaluate the possibility of measuring the shear stress distribution on oil-water interface. It was proven that the present technique could provide some qualify data precise enough to resolve detailed flow structures inside a shear layer formed on oil-water interface provided it is nearly stationary.

  • In this study, we evaluated an effect of the tempered materials on the thermal runaway characteristics in the resol resin synthesis reaction using the adiabatic calorimetry of vent sizing package 2(VSP2). The kinetic parameters, such as an activation energy and heat of reaction, were estimated using the test results. As the results, the instantaneous characteristics to express the intensity of runaway reaction decreased at the low solid content. However, the sudden loss of the tempered materials triggered the second runaway reaction rapidly. In this condition, the heat of reaction and the activation energy of phenol and p-formaldehyde were about 157 kJ/mol and 60 kJ/mol, respectively.

  • The performance of large scale software applications has been automatically increasing for last few decades under the influence of Moore's law - the number of transistors on a microprocessor roughly doubled every eighteen months. However, on-chip transistors limitations and heating issues led to the emergence of multicore processors. The energy efficient ARM based System-on-Chip (SoC) processors are being considered for future high performance computing systems. In this paper, we present a case study of two widely used parallel programming models i.e. MPI and MapReduce on distributed memory cluster of ARM SoC development boards. The case study application, Black-Scholes option pricing equation, was parallelized and evaluated in terms of power consumption and throughput. The results show that the Hadoop implementation has low instantaneous power consumption that of MPI, but MPI outperforms Hadoop implementation by a factor of 1.46 in terms of total power consumption to execution time ratio.
