  • This paper presents the processing of nonlinear features associated with a damage event by quadratic time-frequency distributions for damage identification in a frame structure. A time-frequency distribution is a function which distributes the total energy of a signal at a particular time and frequency point. As the occurrence of damage often gives rise to non-stationary, nonlinear structural behavior, simultaneous representation of the dynamic response in the time-frequency plane offers valuable insight for damage detection. The applicability of the bilinear time-frequency distributions of the Cohen class is examined for the damage assessment of a frame structure from the simulated acceleration data. It is shown that the changes in instantaneous energy of the dynamic response could be a good damage indicator. Presence and location of damage can be identified using Choi-Williams distribution when damping is ignored. However, in the presence of damping the Page distribution is more effective and offers better readability for structural damage detection.

  • In recent years, significant progress has been made in modeling turbulence behavior in plasma and its effect on transport. It has also been made in diagnostics for turbulence measurement; however, there is still a large gap between theoretical model and experimental measurements. Visualization of turbulence can improve the connection to theory and validation of the theoretical model. One method to visualize the flow structures in plasma is a laser Schlieren imaging technique. We have recently applied this technique and investigated the characteristics of a highly underexpanded pulsed plasma jet originating from an electrothermal capillary source. Measurements include temporally resolved laser Schlieren imaging of a precursor blast wave. Analysis on the trajectory of the precursor blast wave shows that it does not follow the scaling expected for a strong shock resulting from the instantaneous deposition of energy at a point. However, the shock velocity does scale as the square root of the deposited energy, in accordance with the point deposition approximation.

  • Nucleate pool boiling experiments with constant wall temperature were performed using pure R1l3 for subcooled, saturated, and superheated pool conditions. A microscale heater array and Wheatstone bridge circuits were used to maintain the constant wall temperature and to measure the instantaneous heat flow rate accurately with high temporal and spatial resolutions. Images of bubble growth were taken at 5,000 frames per second using a high-speed CCD camera synchronized with the heat flow rate measurements. The bubble geometry was obtained from the captured bubble images. The effect of the pool conditions on the bubble growth behavior was analyzed using dimensionless parameters for the initial and thermal growth regions. The effect of the pool conditions on the heat flow rate behavior was also examined. This study will provide good experimental data with precise constant wall temperature boundary condition for such works.

  • Animation and time-resolved analysis of the wake characteristics of 2-D bluff body flows were examinated by applying the multi-vision PIV to square cylinders(three angles of attack: $0^{circ}, 30^{circ} and 45^{\circ}$) and circular cylinders(three rotating speeds: 0rpm, 76rpm, 153rpm) submerged within a circulating water channel $(Re=10^4)$, The macroscopic shedding patterns and their dominant frequencies were discussed in terms of instantaneous velocity, vorticity and turbulent quantities such as turbulent intensity, turbulent kinetic energy and three Reynolds stresses. Particularly the time-averaged distribution of turbulent intensity 'islands' where their peak magnitudes were focused always small regions behind the bodies without noticeable spatial migration were particularly discovered in all cases. And the dominant frequencies of the turbulent quantities in the wake regions were two times larger than those of the velocity and vorticity.

  • In order to simulate a smoke or poisonous gas emergency in a rectangular tunnel and to investigate a better way to exhaust the smoke, the characteristics of smoke flow have been analyzed using flow field data acquired by Particle Image Velocimetry(PIV). Olive oil has been used as tracer particles with the kinematic viscosity of air, $1.51{\times}10^{-5}\;m^2/s$. The investigation has done in the range of Reynolds number of 1600 to 5333 due to the inlet velocities of 0.3 m/s to 1 m/s respectively. The average velocity vector and instantaneous kinematic energy fields with respect to the three different Reynolds numbers are comparatively discussed by the Flow Manager. In general, the smoke flow becomes more disorderly and turbulent with the increase of Reynolds number. Kinematic energy in the measured region increases with the increase of Reynolds number while decreasing at the leeward direction about the outlet region.

  • In this paper, a novel loss minimization of an induction generator in wind energy generation systems is presented. The proposed algorithm is based on the flux level reduction, for which the generator d-axis current reference is estimated using support vector regression (SVR). Wind speed is employed as an input of the SVR and the samples of the generator d-axis current reference are used as output to train the SVR algorithm off-line. Data samples for wind speed and d-axis current are collected for the training process, which plots a relation of input and output. The predicted off-line function and the instantaneous wind speed are then used to determine the d-axis current reference. It is shown that the effect of loss minimization is more significant at low wind speed and the loss reduction is about to 40% at 4[m/s] wind speed. The validity of the proposed scheme has been verified by experimental results.

  • Classification of extracellularly recorded action potential into each unit is an important procedure for further analysis of spike trains as point process. We utilize feedforward neural network structures, multilayer perceptron and radial basis function network to implement spike classifier. For the efficient training of classifiers, nonlinear energy operator that can trace the instantaneous frequency as well as the amplitude of the input signal is used. Trained classifiers shows successful operation, up to 90% correct classification was possible under 1.2 of signal-to-noise ratio.

  • Direct numerical simulations were performed to investigate the physics of a spatially developing turbulent boundary layer flow subjected to spanwise oscillating electromagnetic forces in the near wall region. A fully implicit fractional step method was employed to simulate the flow. The mean flow properties and the Reynolds stresses were obtained to analyze the near-wall turbulent structure. It is found that skin friction and turbulent kinetic energy can be reduced by the electromagnetic forces. The decrease in production is responsible fur the reduction of turbulent kinetic energy. Instantaneous flow visualization techniques were used to observe the response of streamwise vortices and streak structures to spanwise oscillating forces. The near-wall vortical structures are affected by spanwise oscillating electromagnetic forces. Following the stopping of the electromagnetic force, the flow eventually relaxes back to a two-dimensional equilibrium boundary layer.

  • DSM activities have grown and matured over several years in Korea. KEPCO is currently offering some DSM programs in industrial, commercial, and residential customers such as rebate program in purchasing efficient measures. The systematic evaluation process of energy savings and peak reduction will be very important for deciding on the optimal investment of DSM activities in utilities in the future. In general, the estimation process of the potential savings of DSM activities include the determination of baseline electricity consumption, the instantaneous technical potential (ITP), the phased technical potential (PTP), the economic potential (EP), and the achievable potential (AP). The purpose of this article is to provide evaluation process of those DSM potential savings based on bottom-up approach and applicate to residential sector in Korea. In case study, ITP, EP are estimated to be respectively 21.5%, 5.7% of total energy consumption, and 4.1%, 2.5% of peak load in 2010.
