Adult chironomids were collected by various methods, such as light traps, sweeping on grasses, aspiration of light-attracted adults, and sweeping of swarming males with insect nets at various localities. All collected specimens were slide-mounted and identified. I report eight species new to science: Chironomus jangchungensis n. sp., Demicryptochironomus paracamptolabis n. sp., Demicryptochironomus wontongensis n. sp., Microtendipes paratamagouti n. sp., Polypedilum macrohemisphere n. sp., Eukiefferiella busanensis n. sp., Psectrocladius paratogaminimus n. sp., and Pseudosmittia seosania n. sp. I also report four species for the first time in Korea: Chironomus fujiprimus Sasa, Pentapedilum convexum Johannsen, Tanytarsus smolandicus Brundin, and Tanytarsus oyamai Sasa. All species are fully described with illustrations. This is the first report of the genera Eukiefferiella and Pseudosmittia in Korea.
Community structure of benthic macroinvertebrates was investigated from Gigye stream, Pohang, Korea from May to November, 2007. As results, total of 108 species of macroinvertebrates under 49 families, 15 orders, 5 classes in 3 phyla were identified. The number of species was the most abundantly revealed in aquatic insects (class Insecta) with 86 species (82.6%) under 7 orders. The phylum Mollusca (10 species, 9.2%) and the phylum Annelida (6 species, 5.6%) were followed in order. In the class Crustacea, 6 species (5.6%) were distributed. In aquatic insects, the order Odonata was the most abundant taxon (20 species, 23.3%). Seventeen species (19.8%) of the order Ephemeroptera and 16 species (18.6%) of the Coleoptera were followed. The primary dominant species in the stream was Cloeon dipterum of Ephemeroptera. For community analysis, the values of diversity index (H'), evenness index (J'), dominance index (DI) and richness index (RI) were studied and the average values of them were 5.65, 0.84, 0.13, and 13.18, respectively.
Diet composition of amphibians usually reflects the distribution of potential prey within habitats, as well as their diet preference. We identified the diet items of Japanese tree frog (Hyla japonica) using a stomach flushing method in a rice paddy for the establishment of bio-monitoring systems of landscape changes. During the reproductive period, 71% of calling males had empty stomachs. All prey items in the stomachs belonged to the phylum Arthropoda, from eight orders of Insecta and one order of Arachnida. Among insect prey, the most common items in the stomachs were adults of beetles, flies and bugs, and larvae of butterflies and moths. There was a significant positive correlation between the body mass of Japanese tree frogs and the volume of prey items. Our results can provide a basic framework to guide the monitoring systems using prey identification of Japanese tree frogs.
In Korean Peninsula, a total of 175 syrphid species are currently known. As a result of ongoing systematic study of the family Syrphidae, we have discovered the following five species for the first time in the Korean Peninsula: Mallota rossica Portschinsky, 1877, M. shatalkini Mutin, 1999, Sphiximorpha rachmaninovi (Violovitsh, 1981), Volucella bivitta Huo et al., 2007, and V. inanoides Hervé-Bazin, 1923. Among these taxa, Sphiximorpha Rondani, 1850, is the genus recorded for the first time in Korea. In total, three subfamilies, 16 tribes, 70 genera, and 180 species are now officially recognized for the Korean syrphid fauna. In order to facilitate their identification, we here provide specific diagnoses and color photographs for the species listed.
Four Korean species of the genus Philonthus Stephens (P. aeneipennis Boheman, P. daimio Sharp, P. nakanei Sawada, and P. numata Dvorak) are identified newly and are recorded for the first time in Korea. The diagnosis and the aedeagus illustrations of each species are presented herein.
A revised checklist of Korean Trichoptera is provided for the species recorded from the Korean Peninsula, including both North and South Korea. The checklist includes bibliographic research as well as results after reexamination of some specimens. For each species, we provide the taxonomic literature that examined Korean Trichoptera materials or mentioned significant taxonomic treatments regarding to Korean species. We also provide the records of unnamed species based on larval identification for further study. Based on taxonomic considerations, 20 species among the previously known nominal species in Korea are deleted or synonymized, and three species omitted from the previous lists, Hydropsyche athene Malicky and Chantaramongkol, 2000, H. simulata Mosely, 1942 and Helicopsyche coreana Mey, 1991 are newly added to the checklist. Hydropsyche formosana Ulmer, 1911 is recorded from the Korean Peninsula for the first time by the identification of Hydropsyche KD. In addition, we recognized 14 species of larvae separated with only tentative alphabetic designations. As a result, this new Korean Trichoptera checklist includes 218 currently recognized species in 66 genera and 25 families from the Korean Peninsula.
This study has been performed to investigate normal synaptic organizations in the subesophageal ganglion and terminaiion of antennal receptor cells in the ipsilateral subesophageal gan91ion of Pieris rapae. The various normal synaptic organizations in subesophageal ganglion could be differentiated into the five types. The proximal removal of a left antenna resulted in the weakly-dark, semidark and dark degenerations in the type I bostons of the ipsilateral subesophageal ganglion. Therefore, it was concluded that the axon terminals of the receptor cells projecting from the antenna into the brain form the type 1 synapses together with the dendrites in the ipsilateral subesophageal ganglion.
The ipsilateral dorsal lobe of the brain one or two days after cutting a left antenna in Pieris rapae has been examined with electron microscope to investigate the connection of the receptor cells between antenna and dorsal lobe. The proximal removal of the left antenna leads to the weakly-dark, semidark or dark degeneration of antennal receptor tenninals in ipsilateral dorsal lobe. Therefore, it is concluded that some of antennal receptor cells which project into the brain terminate in ipsilateral dorsal lobe located immediately behind the antennal lobe.
The fine structure on the compound eye surface of 6 species belong to 6 genera of Asilinae in Korea was morphologically studied with a scanning electron microscope and image analyser. The compound eye was divided into 3 parts(medial, middle, and lateral) according to a difference in the diameter of a facet which was various form. The fine structure of a facet in Trichomachimus scutellaris(Coquillett) was valuable in taxonomy because it was differ from each species in Asilinae.
An immunocytochemical investigation has been carried out to localize serotoninimmunoreactive (5-HTi) neurons in suboesophageal ganglion of fifth instar lawn of cabbage worm Pieris rupae. The 285-HTi cell bodies were identified in the rind of suboesophaseal ganglion. The four 5-HTi cell bodies of them are 18rge in size (about 35 Um), while the remaining cell bodies are medium-sized (about 15 Uml. The 5-HTi nerve processes are abundantly located in central large neuropil, circumoesophageal connectives which join the suboesophaseal ganglion to the tritocerebrum of the brain, and connectives between the suboesophageal and the first thoracic ganglia. These results indicate that the 5-HTi nerve fibers, which constitute the central large neuropil, have structural connections with the above two connectives. Especially in central large neuropil, many 5-HTi nenre fibers form a large circular bundle, in which a 5-HTi nerve fiber bundle is crossing.
