  • Electrorheological (ER) fluids, typically composed of particles having higher dielectric constant or electric conductivity than that of suspending fluids with a low viscosity, undergo dramatic, reversible changes when exposed to an external electric field. Among various electroactive materials, we put our efforts on inorganic materials including zeolite, MCM-41, MCM-41/polyaniline composite and SBA-15/polyaniline composites. Their preparation and ER characteristics are introduced.

  • Silicone dioxide absorbed polyoxyethylene alkylether sulfate (EU-S75D) surfactant was prepared. The core-shell composite of inorganic/organic were polymerized by using styrene(St) as a shell monomer and potassium persulfate(KPS) as an initiator. We studied the effect of surfactants on the core-shell structure of silicone dioxide/styrene in the presence of an anionic surfactant lauryl sulfate(SLS). The structure of core-shell polymer were investigated by measuring to the thermal decomposition of polymer composite using thermogravimetric analyzer(TGA) and morphology of latex by scanning electron microscope(SEM).

  • Organic/organic and organic/inorganic multilayer films composed of organic polyelectrolytes (PE) and inorganic nanoparticles/platelets were prepared from the layer-by-layer (LbL) deposition using both spinning and dipping. The difference in both LbL methods is quantitatively compared in terms of internal layer ordering and physical properties of the multilayered films. Additionally, we suggest that the patterned multilayer films can be easily prepared by the combination of the spin SA and the lift-off method. Freestanding films were also prepared with the LbL deposition on low energy substrates, which allows the detailed analysis of composition within the films. Other LbL thin films prepared with block copolymer micelles will be discussed.

  • The development of polymer/inorganic nanocomposites has attracted a great deal of interest due to the improved hybrid properties derived from the two different components. Various nanoscale fillers have been used to enhance polymer mechanical and thermal properties, such as toughness, stiffness, and heat resistance. The effects of the filler on the final properties of the nanocomposites are highly dependent on the filler shape, particle size, aggregate size, surface characteristics, polymer/inorganic interactions, and degree of dispersion. In this paper, we describe the influence of different $CaCO_3$ dispersion methods on the thermal properties of polyethylene terephthalate (PET)/$CaCO_3$ composites: i.e., the adsorption of $CaCO_3$ on the modified PET surface, and the hydrophobic modification of the hydrophilic $CaCO_3$ surface. We prepared PET/$CaCO_3$ nanocomposites using a twin-screw extruder, and investigated their thermal properties and morphology.

  • Inorganic polymer based hybrid membranes consisting of zirconium oxide and polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) have been synthesized by sol-gel processes. The hybrid membranes showed thermal stability and flexibility up to $300^{\circ}C$. The membrane becomes proton conducting polymer electrolyte when added with 12-phosphotungstic acid (PWA). The conductivity of the membranes was measured in the temperature range from room temperature to $150^{\circ}C$ under saturated humidity and a maximum conductivity of $5{\times}10^{-5}\;Sm^{-1}$ was obtained at $150^{\circ}C$.

  • Encapsulation of organic based devices is essential issue due to easy deterioration of organic material by water vapor. Atomic layer deposition (ALD) is a promising solution because of its low temperature deposition and quality of the deposited film. Moisture permeation has a mechanism to pass through defects, Thin Film Encapsulation using inorganic / organic / inorganic hybrid film has been used as promising technology. $Al_2O_3$ / Polymer / $Al_2O_3$ multilayer film has shown excellent environmental protection characteristics despite of thin thicknesses of the films.

  • Formaldehyde has widely been used for the cross-linking of polyvinyl alcohol polyvinyl alcohol polymer. The effects of formaldehyde on the water resistance of MDF cement composites were investigated as a function of types of catalyst, base or acid, and the amount of formaldehyde. The acetalization, reaction of OH group of PVA with aldehyde, was ended incompletely under base atmosphere. However, by addition of citric acid, the cross-linking of PVA polymer could be acheved through acetalization of PVA and formaldehyde. The effects of these different patterne according to the types of catalyst on the water resistance of MDF cement were studied by the preparation of PVA films and MDF composites. Thanks to the cross-linking reaction of PVA polymer chains by formaldehyde, the modified PVA films and MDF composites showed a good water-resistant propety. The modified MDF cement composite to which 3 wt% formaldehyde and 1 wt% cirtic acid were added showed 80% of initial flexural strength and good interfacial state between cement grain and polymer matrix. However, 4 wt% formaldehyde deteriorted the processing conditions, microstructures and eventually the flexural strength, causing sharp increase in the viscosity of sample dough during the mixing process. To study the relatins of flexural strength and interface of cement grain and polymer matrix, SEM and MIP measurement were performed.

  • Optical transparency and high diffraction efficiency are two essential factors for high performance of the photopolymer. Optical transparency mainly depends on the miscibility between polymer binder and photopolymerized polymer, while diffraction efficiency depends on the refractive index modulation between polymer binder and photopolymerized polymer. For most of organic materials, the large refractive index difference between two polymers accompanies large structural difference that leads to the poor miscibility and thus poor optical quality via light scattering. Therefore, it is difficult to design a high-performance photopolymer satisfying both requirements. In this work, first, we prepared a new phase-stable photopolymer (PMMA) with large refractive index modulation and investigated the optical properties. Our photopolymer is based on modified poly (methyl methacrylate) as a polymer binder, acryl amide as a photopolymerizable monomer, triethanolamine as initiator, and yellow eosin as a photosensitizer at 532 nm. Diffraction efficiency over 85% and optical transmittance over 90% were obtained for the photopolymer. Second, Organic-inorganic nanocomposite films were prepared by dispersing an aromatic methacrylic monomer and a photo- initiator in organic-inorganic hybrid sol-gel matrices. The film properties could be controlled by optimizing the content of an organically modified silica precursor (TSPEG) in the sol-gel matrices. The photopolymer film modified with the organic chain (TSPEG) showed high diffraction efficiency (> 90%) under an optimized condition. High diffraction efficiency could be ascribed to the fast diffusion and efficient polymerization of monomers under interference light to generate refractive index modulation. The TSPEG modified photopolymer film could be successfully used for holographic memory.

  • Zero-energy construction is being emphasized due to environmental pollution. However, in the case of external insulation using organic insulation with good insulation performance, there are many studies on inorganic insulation as it shows limitations on fire stability. In addition, as the demand for stone for exterior walls increases, Cellular Light -weight Concrete(CLC) with polymer is used to supplement fire stability and insulation performance, and the construction of stone is complemented by combining organic insulation, inorganic insulation, and stone. In this study, the compressive strength and adhesion in tension of CLC are studied. As a result of the experiment, the compressive strength of 28 days according to the polymer addition rate did not change. The adhesion in tension according to the polymer addition rate tends to increase as the addition rate increases. The target adhesion in tension is 0.8 MPa, but the maximum value of the experiment did not reach the target value, and further research was needed to combine to maintain the density and improve the adhesion in tension.

  • Micro inorganic solids and dissolved materials contained in the white water of linerboard process was obtained by centrifugation, and their characteristics were analyzed along with their effects on the mechanical properties of linerboard. Micro inorganic materials had little influence on tensile index and ZDT of UKP sheets. They showed rather a positive effect on mechanical properties of KOCC sheets due to adsorbed polymer. Mechanical properties of KOCC sheets decreased remarkably when the concentration of dissolved materials increased especially above 4000 ppm.
