A new approach to the solubilization of excess activated sludge by the inoculation of lactic acid bacteria was studied to reduce the amount of sludge produced in the activated sludge treatment process. Aerobic microorganism in sludge was lysed in anaerobic condition and the cytoplasmic substance eluted was utilized as a carbon source by lactic acid bacteria. On the basis of sludge solubilization efficiency, Lactobacillus brevis and Leuconostoc mesenteroides subsp mesenteroides were selected the best candidates among five kinds of Lactobacillus sp. and seven kinds of Leuconostoc sp. The sludge solubilization efficiency by heterofermentative lactic acid bacteria was more efficient than that of homofermentative bacteria. Initial value of soluble COD (sCOD) was 1050 mg/L at the initial inoculation time increased to 3070 mg/L (192% solubilization) at 96 h of the incubation time. The inoculation of lactobacillus brevis to the sludge resulted in 2824% increase in sCOD value after 96 h of incubation than the control experiment. Leuconostoc mesenteroides subsp mesenteroides showed 152% increase of solubilization and 30% increase of S-COD/T-COD on 96 h of incubation time. Considering the increase of S-COD by the inoculation of Leuconostoc sp. on 24 h, 10% inoculation of lactic acid bacteria to the sludge was most effective.
Although chemical oxygen demand (COD) is an important issue for wastewater treatment, COD reduction with microalgae has been less studied compared to nitrogen or phosphorus removal. COD removal is not efficient in conventional wastewater treatment using microalgae, because the algae release organic compounds, thereby finally increasing the COD level. This study focused on enhancing COD removal and meeting the effluent standard for discharge by optimizing sludge inoculation timing, which was an important factor in forming a desirable algae/bacteria consortium for more efficient COD removal and higher biomass productivity. Activated sludge has been added to reduce COD in many studies, but its inoculation was done at the start of cultivation. However, when the sludge was added after 3 days of cultivation, at which point the COD concentration started to increase again, the algal growth and biomass productivity were higher than those of the initial sludge inoculation and control (without sludge). Algal and bacterial cell numbers measured by qPCR were also higher with sludge inoculation at 3 days later. In a semi-continuous cultivation system, a hydraulic retention time of 5 days with sludge inoculation resulted in the highest biomass productivity and N/P removal. This study achieved a further improved COD removal than the conventional microalgal wastewater treatment, by introducing bacteria in activated sludge at optimized timing.
Since the leaf inoculation procedures are time-consuming and require considerable growth chamber space, a rapid dioassay method for screening of pathogenicity of Didymella bryoniae, a casual agent of gummy stem blight in watermelon, was established in this paper. The method produced reliable results within 8 days ( 5 days for growing seedlings and 3 days for rapid disease response in the seedlings). After contaminants in the root of 4~5 day-old seedlings had been washed using sterilized water, 5 seedlings were dipped into a vial containing 12 ml of conidial suspension (106 cells/ml). After the vials were placed in a growth chamber (22$^{\circ}C$, RH 50%, 14hr light/10hr darkness) for 3 days, susceptibility and resistance of cultivars were determined by the degree of disease response on cotyledon. The result of obtained by the dip-inoculation method was well coincided with the results by the leaf inoculation procedures and the result that had been observed for several years in the field. Screening of collected watermelon cultivars by the dip-inoculation method revealed that all the 21 domestic cultivars collected were susceptible and only 3 foreign cultivars (PI 189225, PI 482322 and IT 188207) were resistant among 18 cultivars A cucumber cultivar (Marketer) and bitter cucumber were proven to be resistant against the D. bryoniae among 8 other different cucurbits tested. The SDS-PAGE patterns of total proteins from a susceptible (Keumcheon) and a resistant (PI 189225) watermelon cultivars were compared 0, 12, 24 and 36 hrs after inoculation. The amounts of two distinct protein bands (24 kDa and 70 kDa) were gradually increased after inoculation in both cultivars.

The objective of this study was to determine the effect of single and co-inoculation of plant growth promoting bacteria (PGPB) on early plant growth in Saemangeum reclaimed soil. Plant growth promoting Brevibacterium iodinum RS16 and Methylobacterium oryzae CBMB20 were inoculated on maize (Zea mays L.) and sorghum-sudangrass hybrid (Sorghum bicolor L.) grown in Saemangeum reclaimed soil. Single and co-inoculation of B. iodinum RS16 and M. oryzae CBMB20 increased plant height, dry biomass accumulation and macro-nutrient accumulation of maize and sorghum-sudangrass hybrid. M. oryzae CBMB20 treatment increased plant height in maize by 41.2% at 30 days after sowing (DAS), shoot dry weight and total dry weight compared to non-inoculated treatment. Macro-nutrient accumulation (N and P) in maize roots was significantly increased with co-inoculation treatment, K and Ca content was significantly increased at B. iodinum RS16 treatment compared to non-inoculated treatment. Macro-nutrient accumulation (P, K, Ca and Mg) in shoot was higher with M. oryzae CBMB20 treatment compared to non-inoculated treatment. In case of sorghum-sudangrass hybrid, co-inoculation treatment showed 33.7% increase in plant height compared to non-inoculated treatment at 30 DAS. M. oryzae CBMB20 treatment increased root dry weight and total dry weight, macro-nutrient accumulation in roots and N, Ca and Mg accumulation in shoot compared to non-inoculated treatment. P and K accumulation in shoot was significantly increased at co-inoculation treatment compared to non-inoculated treatment. This pot culture experiment demonstrated that single and co-inoculation of B. iodinum RS16 and M. oryzae CBMB20 increased the early growth and nutrient accumulation of maize and sorghum-sudangrass hybrid.

Detached chili pepper fruits were inoculated with the conidial suspension of Colletotrichum acutatum JC-24 simultaneously (simultaneous inoculation, SI) and at delayed time (delayed inoculation, DI) after wounding with (delayed wound inoculation, DWI) or without additional wounding (delayed non-wound inoculation, DNI) at the inoculation time. Disease severity was significantly lowered by DNI, compared to SI. By DNI, the disease reduction rates were proportional with the length of delayed time, and greater at the high temperature range (18, 23 and $28^{\circ}$) than at the low temperature ($13^{\circ}$) tested. DWI was also effective in reducing the disease severity especially at 18oC; however, its effectiveness was lower than for DNI. In light microscopy, parenchyma cells at the wounding sites were modified structurally, initially forming new cell walls crossing cytoplasm, enlarged with multiple periclinal cell divisions, and finally layered like wound periderms. In DWI, the above structural modifications occurred, showing the restriction of the fungal invasion by the cell walls in enlarged modified cells, while no definite cellular modifications were found with proliferation of fungal hyphae in SI. Sclerenchyma-like cells with thickened cell walls were proliferated around the wounding sites, which were partially dissolved by DWI, probably leading to some disease development. All of these results suggest that the decline of the anthracnose disease in pepper fruit by the delayed inoculations may be derived from the structural modifications related to the healing processes of the previous wound inflicted on the tissues.
The experiment was conducted at the Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Agricultural University, Gazipur to study the response of chickpea (Cicer arietinum L) to dual inoculation of Rhizobium and arbuscular mycorrhiza, poultry litter, nitrogen, and phosphorus on spore population and colonization, nodulation, growth, yield attributes, and yield. The performance of Rhizobium inoculant alone was superior to control in all the parameters of the crop studied. Among the treatments dual inoculation of Rhizobium and arbuscular mycorrhiza in presence of poultry litter performed best in recording number and dry weight of nodules, dry weight of shoots and roots, number of pods/plant, number of seeds/pod, and seed yields of chickpea. The highest seed yield of 3.96g/plant was obtained by inoculating chickpea plants with dual inoculation of Rhizobium and arbuscular mycorrhiza in association with poultry litter. Treatments receiving dual inoculation of Rhizobium and arbuscular mycorrhiza in presence of nitrogen and phosphorus, Rhizobium inoculant in presence of nitrogen and phosphorus, and that of arbuscular mycorrhiza in presence of nitrogen and phosphorus were similar as that of treatment receiving dual inoculation of Rhizobium and arbuscular mycorrhiza in presence of poultry litter. From the view point of nodulation, growth, yield attributes, and yields of chickpea, dual inoculation of Rhizobium inoculant and arbuscular mycorrhiza along with poultry litter was considered to be the balanced combination of nutrients for achieving the maximum output from cultivation of chickpea in Shallow Red Brown Terrace Soil of Bangladesh.

To investigate the effect of Mycorrhiza (Glomus intradics) and Rhizobium inoculation on the N, P utilization and the growth of Alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.), four treatments (non-inoculation, control ; Mycorrhiza inoculation, M ; Rhizobiurn inoculation, R and Mycorrhiza and Rhizobium inoculation, M+R) were applied. The associated analyses were carried out on the early vegetative growth stage (DAS 56, 56 days after seeding) and on the early flowering stage (DAS 126). The decreased rate of total N and P content in soil, with advancing plant growth, was relatively higher in the mycorrhiza andor rhizobium treatments than control. The content of available phosphorus in soil at DAS 126 increased by about 40 % in M and M+R treatment compared to control (141.0 mg PzOg'kg DM), while non-significant changes was observed in R treatment. Total N uptake and P uptake in the control at DAS 126 were 33.91 mglplant and 2.42 mdplant, respectively, about 21, 50 and 51 % of increases in total N uptake and 30, 11 and 47 % of increases in total P uptake were estimated in M, R and M+R treatment. Comparing to control, dry matter yield significantly increased by 8, 27 and 28 %, and crude protein yield also by 21, 42 and 39 %, respectively, in M, R and M+R treatment. The present data indicated that mycorrhiza orland rhizobium inoculation improved N, P utilization, and consequently increased the yield of alfalfa. This study was conducted to investigate the immune response of layers fed diets supplemented with excess micronutrients, i.e., vitamin A, methionine, Zn, Cu, and Fe to the inoculation of Newcastle disease vaccine(NDV) or infectious bronchitis vaccine(IBV). The antibody titer against the NDV increased immediately after the inoculation and stayed high during the next 6 wk. On the other hand, The antibody titer against the IBV increased after 4 wk of inoculation The IgM level increased rapidly after 1 wk of NDV inoculation, however, it decreased after 5 wk of inoculation. The IgA displayed similar pattern to that of IgM in response to NDV inoculation. The pattern of IgM change after IBV inoculation was similar to that when layers were treated with NDV. However, IgA level changed earlier than did IgM. The IgG response to the NDV and IBV was very weak compared to the other immune responses. The excess supplementation of micronutrients to the diets of layers inoculated with NDV elicited favorable antibody titer and immune response compared to the layers fed the control diet. The excess Zn, however, allowed the layers to have higher antibody titer for the 4-wk period after NDV injection: after that they showed no effect of extra-Zn. The immune responses of layers fed excess vitamin A, Cu, methionine, and Fe were markedly higher in IgA and IgG than the control layers. The excess Zn, however, did not bring about any favorable result. No difference was detected in IgG level between control and micronutrients-treated groups.
For cultivation on sawdust-bed of oak-mushroom until present time, inoculation of spawn on sawdust bed has been performed by sawdust spawn. But, liquid spawn may have advantages for rapid mass production of spawn, and now, sawdust-cultivation by liquid spawn inoculation should be applied instead of sawdust spawn. Therefore, investigations were performed to evaluate the effect of sawdust-cultivation by liquid spawn inoculation. The results were as follows: 1. When 11 kinds of liquid media were applied, the oak-mushroom culture medium was the most excellent in growth. Most suitable temperature at PDA was $25^{\circ}C$, and $22.5\sim27.5^{\circ}C$ in range were optimal for liquid culture. In liquid culture, amount of mycelial growth increases rapidly up to 40 days of cultivation. Incubation at fermentor brought yield of 106mg dry mycelia per 40ml media after 17 days. 2. In 1l-spawn bottle, growth of mycelium by inoculation of 20ml-liquid spawns were faster than 6g-sawdust spawn in spread of mycelia. On 2kg-bag culture, inoculations of 10ml-, 20ml- and 30ml-liquid spawns were all slower than 20g-sawdust spawn in mycelial spread. So, amount increasement in ampunt of liquid spawn should be discussed. Yields of mushrooms until third sproutings of 2kg-bag culture were 580g in 30ml-liquid spawn inoculation, but 510g, 486g and 470g from 20g-sawdust spawn, 20ml-liquid spawn and 10ml-liquid spawn, respectively. Thus, 30ml-liquid spawn inoculation was highest in yield.

The objective of this study was to determine whether inoculation with Bacillus licheniformis MH48 as a plant growth-promoting rhizobacterium (PGPR) could promote nutrient uptake of seedlings of the ornamental plant Camellia japonica in the Saemangeum reclaimed coastal land in Korea. B. licheniformis MH48 inoculation increased total nitrogen and phosphorus content in soils by 2.2 and 20.0 fold, respectively, compared to those without bacterial inoculation. In addition, B. licheniformis MH48 produced auxin, which promoted the formation of lateral roots and root hairs, decreased production of growth-inhibiting ethylene, and alleviated salt stress. Total nitrogen and phosphorus uptake of seedlings subjected to bacterial inoculation was 2.3 and 3.6 fold higher, respectively, than the control. However, B. licheniformis MH48 inoculation had no significant effect on the growth of seedlings. Our results suggest that inoculation with B. licheniformis MH48 can be used as a PGPR bio - enhancer to stimulate fine root development, promote nutrient uptake and alleviate salt stress in ornamental plant seedlings grown in the high-salinity conditions of reclaimed coastal land.
