  • The aim of this research was to evaluate the influences of coating components and structures on ink absorbency. The ink absorbency was measured as porosity, K&N ink absorption, gloss and ink set-off. In order to obtain the relationship between the coating structure and the ink absorbency, the binder level was adjusted and two types of pigments were examined. One of the pigments was known to make the porous coating structure and the other one had strong ink affinity. The effects of coating components were studied by applying six different types of latex and various additives . In this research, CLC(cylindrical laboratory coater) and Prufbau printability tester were used. It was found that the decreasing latex dosage and introducing porous pigment were effective solutions to increase ink absorbency. However, the ink absorbency could not be improved by applying the fine pigment even though it had strong ink affinity. Among the characters of the latex, particle size and surface tension were found to have the strong effect on ink absorbency. The ink absorbency increased with large particle size and low surface tension latex. The additives were varied and it was found that applying to the top coating was effective.

  • When coated paperboard is printed, pressed into a groove with a creasing rule and folded, white line cracking occurs along the crease due to intensive mechanical pressure. The cracking will deteriorates product quality and waste resources. Effects of creasing pressure and ink dosage on the foldability of coated board were investigated. It was shown that applying an optimum pressure is important during creasing. When the pressure was too low, the crease formed was not sufficiently deep enough to enable precise folding. When an excess pressure was applied, fiber bonding was destroyed, resulted in unsatisfactory cracking. When the coated board was folded in machine direction (MD), long cracks were formed along MD. When it folded in cross direction (CD), the cracks were shorter and formed perpendicular to CD. Printing promoted cracking due to the decrease in flexibility of coated board. In addition, uneven ink film layer on the coating layer caused worse cracking.

  • This experiment was mainly performed with a biological treatment of laser printed paper using enzyme, We got the following conclusions : In the case of nonionic surfactant treatment, brightness, residual ink contents and several strength properties of deinked paper were excellent at the low dosage of cellulase 0.05%. When mixed cellulase and xylanase was used, yield was increased as the dosage increased up to 0.2%, but brightness was decreased at the same condition. In contrast, deinking efficiency of anionic type was reduced in terms of brightness, residual ink contents, and tensile strength. As flotation time was increased, yield decreased and brightness increased slightly. On the other hand, the addition of surfactant during repulping process showed better result than that during flotation process.

  • Experimental work was carried out in order to produce a novel grade of ink-jet paper that has both high print-out quality and price competitiveness. Usually, silica and PVOH has been used for ink-jet paper to design the coating layer that has a hydrophilic and micro-porous structure. However, poor rheological characteristics and low productivity of the silica-PVOH system make the price of the ink-jet paper high. The main focus of this study was replacing the conventional silica (coating pigment) PVOH (binder) coating system with the new PCC (coating pigment) cationic starch (binder) coating system, and optimizing thecoating technology associated with PPC-cationic starch system. In this study, ink-jet print quality of PCC-coated papers was compared with that of silica-coated paper. Two types of PCC were used: conventional type and colloid type. It turned out that PCC C, a conventional coating pigment, has not given a desirable result: it showed high dot reproduction, but it gave low optical density. In spite of low dot reproduction, the qualities of PCC A were comparable or superior to those of silica in optical density, color reproduction, and the uniformity of printing surface. It was also shown that the problems that are happened when the dosage level of cationic starch was too low were varied with ink-type used in each printer. However, in the case of low binder level, the produced image was widely spread resulting fromtoo low optical density of images, or from the lack of bonding ability to set ink into coating surface.

  • Cellulase was modified with copolymer with polyethylene(PE)/polypropylene(PP) oxide and maleic anhydride(MA) by maleylation reaction, and modified cellulase was applied to the reprocessing of old newsprint (ONP). Cellulase of modified cellulase enhanced the detachment of ink particles by fibrillation of fiber. The copolymer, which acted as the surfactant formed bubbles and removed the ink particles in the floatation process. Modified cellulase showed the same deinking ability without excess dosage compared with the conventional method. And, it improved the physical properties including tensile strength, brightness, and whiteness compared with the conventional deinking process. The bond between the ink and fiber got stronger as the storage time increased, and it became very difficult to remove the ink particle. But, modified cellulase increased the deinking ability by 41% compared with the conventional process at the experiment of the ONP for 1 year storage time. It removed the yellowing and increased the whiteness and brightness as well as tensile strength and internal bond strength.

  • This study was carried in order to manufacture the high quality coated paper. High quality includes not only properties of coated paper but also final print quality. In this study, new acrylic-styrene emulsion was polymerized in laboratory and compared with styrene-butadiene latex. Low-shear viscosity of coating color was decreased with increasing acrylic-emulsion dosage. WRV was increased with addition and decreased with substitution of acrylic-emulsion. Paper gloss, brightness and whiteness were increased and PPS and opacity was slightly decreased with acrylic-emulsion. Ink gloss was increased with using No. 3 acrylic-emulsion due to lower ink setting properties. However No.1, 2 emulsion shows opposite situation. Surface strength of coated paper was increased with using No. 3 acrylic-emulsion These results indicate that high quality coated paper can be manufactured with using No. 3 acrylic-emulsion.

  • The conventional coated paper has many functional problems for printed RFID tag. This study was carried out in order to evaluate the effect of coating color components on conductivity of printed coated paper. It has been well known that the efficiency of printed RFID tag is influenced by surface properties of substrate. The required properties for suitable substrate of printed RFID tag are high smoothness and waterproof property. In this study high grammage base paper surface sized with PVA was used. Coated paper was manufactured with five different formulations. Types of coating pigments and dosage of latex were varied. It was obtained high smoothness and also less binder demand with clay than GCC. On the other hand, suitable surface resistance and smoothness of coated paper for RFID tag was obtained with 20% of latex. Besides it shows the possibility of using coated paper for printed RFID tag.

  • Bio-binder is well known as a promising alternative binder for SB latex because it is eco-friendly and inexpensive, compared to synthetic latex. SB latex in top coating color was substituted with starch-based bio-binder to investigate its effects on the coating color and its coated paper properties. Bio-binder contributed to the increase of coating color viscosity, and the improvement of water retention. Most optical properties except opacity were deteriorated by the increase of bio-binder dosage. It was also found that the increase of bio-binder substitution in top coating color brought about the increase of roughness, and decrease of coated paper gloss, print gloss, dry and wet pick strength. However the stiffness and the ink set-off of the bio-binder coated paper were improved. Overall, mostly adverse effects of bio-binder on the properties of coating color and its paper were observed. Therefore, it is not recommended to use bio-binder as top coating color.

  • Model experiments were conducted to investigate the effect of different fillers on the removal of toner ink. Combinations of different papers (commercial photocopy paper and filler-free paper), fillers (calcium carbonate, kaolin clay, and talc), and chemicals(1-octadecanol, stearic acid, oleic acid, and TOFA) and stearic acid were found to be effective in detachment and agglomeration of toner ink. Furthermore, pH had little effect on toner detachment and agglomeration, indicating both protonated fatty acids and their anions are equally effective. In the presence of either kaolin clay or talc, all these agglomerating agents are equally effective, although a slightly higher dosage(1% for clay and 2% for talc as compared with control) is required, presumably due to the adsorption of chemical by the filler. Calcium carbonate filler, on the other hand, has a significant and adverse effect on the fatty acids used but has little effect on 1-octadecanol with the exception of possible adsorption. While stearic acid is not effective, a much higher level of oleic acid or TOFA is needed when calcium carbonate fillers are present as compared to the filler-free case. Fatty acids react with calcium carbonate to form calcium salts. The availability of fatty acid anion for toner detachment and agglomeration is determined by the solubility of calcium salt of a given fatty acid. Calcium oleate is 10 times more soluble in water than calcium stearate.
