Eleven cases of peripheral arterial injuries treated at Korea University Woo Sok Hospital during these 3 years and 3 months from Feb. 1971Eleven cases of peripheral arterial injuries treated at Korea University Woo Sok Hospital during these 3 years and 3 months from Feb. 1971 to May 1974 were reviewed. Common causes of injuries were stab wound, automobile accidents and iatrogenic injuries during operation. Of the 11 arterial injuries 3 were femoral artery which` was the commonest in frequency and the next was 2 cases of brachial artery. The most frequent type of injury was transection. Laceration, contusion and spasm was also recognized. The need to operate immediately following an injury was emphasized. Operative procedures were end to end anastomosis and saphenous vein graft in 5 and 2 cases, respectively. Other cases were undergone multiple suture ligature due to staphyllococcal infection, insertion of polyethylene catheter, and lateral suture after thromboendarterectomy. Fractures and extensive soft tissue damage associated with arterial injuries with widespread destruction of the collateral circulation aggravated the situation and complicated the amputation of lower extremity in 4 cases. The factors influencing the amputation were time lag, presence of associated injuries and complications.[KTCS 1974;1:109-116] Common causes of injuries were stab wound, automobile accidents and iatrogenic injuries during operation. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify incidence of nonfatal unintentional injuries (accidents) among students, and to investigate compensation payment for five years (2000~2004) in schools located in Seoul. Methods: Subjects were 14,783 students injured among elementary, middle and high school students. The accumulated data for 5 years (2000~2004) was from the Seoul School Safety and Insurance Association. Chi-square, ttest, logistic regression, and MANCOVA were conducted. Results: The most frequent accidents occurred among males (73.2%), and in special school students (3.86 per 1,000) followed by middle school students (3.05 per 1,000), in May (0.25 per 1,000) followed by June and October, in physical education classes (0.73 per 1,000) followed by special activities (0.40 per 1,000), recess (0.31 per 1,000) and lunch (0.29 per 1,000). Fractures (0.86 per 1,000) were followed by mild injuries (0.39 per 1,000), joint and ligament injuries (0.31 per 1,000), and teeth injuries (0.26 per 1,000). After adjusting for potential confounding variables, the highest means of final compensation payment was for burns (810 thousand KRW) followed by the teeth injuries (506 thousand KRW), cleaning injuries (550 thousand KRW) followed by injuries incurred during special activities (510 thousand KRW) and injuries incurred at special schools (556 thousand KRW). Conclusion: In school, the highest incidences of nonfatal unintentional injuries were in special schools, among males, fractures and physical education. However, the highest compensation payments were for burns, and injuries taking place at special schools and during cleaning hour. Proper health education including teaching healthy habits for safety/injury prevention is needed to prevent injuries and decrease compensation.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to determine the incidence and characteristics of associated injuries in patients with spine trauma. Methods: Data of 3,920 consecutive patients admitted to a regional trauma center during a 3-year period were analyzed retrospectively. Results: Of the 3,920 patients who were admitted to the trauma center during the 3-year study period, 389 (9.9%) had major spinal injuries. Among these 389 patients, 303 (77.9%) had associated injuries outside the spine. The most common body region of associated injuries was the extremities or pelvis (194 cases, 49.4%), followed by the chest (154 cases, 39.6%) and face (127 cases, 32.6%). Of these 303 patients, 149 (64%) had associated injuries that required surgical treatment such as laparotomy or internal fixation. Associated injuries were more common in patients with lumbar injuries (93.3%) or multiple spinal injuries (100%) than in those with lower cervical injuries (67.4%). There was a significant correlation between the location of the spinal injury and the body region of the associated injury. However, distant associated injuries were also common. Conclusions: Associated injuries were very common in spinal injury patients. Based on demographic groups, the trauma mechanism, and the location of spinal injury, an associated injury should be suspected until proven otherwise. Using a multidisciplinary and integrated approach to treat trauma victims is of the paramount importance.
Background: Injury is the leading cause of death or disability in children and adolescents. Rates of deaths from injuries have recently declined, but studies of the occurrence of nonfatal injuries are lacking. Purpose: This study aimed to investigate nonfatal injuries in children and adolescents younger than 20 years based on data from the Korean National Health and Nutrition Survey, 2007-2018. Methods: A questionnaire survey was conducted to determine whether children and adolescents had experienced an injury requiring a hospital visit in the previous year. We investigated each injury's risk factors and characteristics. Results: Of a total of 21,598 children and adolescents, 1,748 (weighted percentage, 8.1%) experienced one or more injuries in the previous year. There was no yearly difference in the proportion of injuries experienced. Among the male subjects, 10.0% had an injury experience; among the female participants, 6.1% had an injury experience (P<0.001). The highest rate was 9.0% in children aged 1-4 years. In multivariate logistic regression analysis, male sex; having an urban residence; having restricted activity due to visual, hearing, or developmental impairment; and attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder were significant risk factors for injury experience. The characteristics of up to 3 injuries per patient were investigated, and 1,951 injuries were analyzed. Falls and slips accounted for 34.9%, collisions for 34.1%, and motor vehicle accidents for 11.3% of the total injuries. Ninety-six percent of injuries were unintentional, 20% caused school absences, and 10% required hospitalization. Conclusion: Among Korean children and adolescents, 8.1% experienced injuries at least once a year with no significant differences in incidence over the past 12 years. Greater attention and effort to prevent injuries are needed.

Purpose: This study was conducted to examine the factors associated with work related injuries of nurses in small and medium sized hospitals. Method: A cross-sectional survey was conducted with nurses in eight hospitals from October 2007 to January 2008. A questionnaire was designed to collect information on nurses' work related injuries, and individual and job related characteristics. The response rate was 65.1%. Data from 294 nurses were analyzed. Multiple logistic regression analysis was performed to determine factors associated with work related injuries. Result: Of the 294 nurses, 19.1% (n=56) responded as having at least one injury during their job performance. The logistic regression analysis revealed that the significant factors influencing work related injuries were job satisfaction, stress recognition, and hospital's location. Nurses with a higher job satisfaction were less likely to experience work related injuries (OR=0.58). Nurses with a higher stress recognition (OR=2.57) and those working at hospitals in metropolitan cities (OR=3.28) were more likely to experience work related injuries. Conclusions: The result of this study indicated that a substantial proportion of nurses in small and medium sized hospitals had experienced injuries related to nursing job. Interventions to prevent work related injuries among nurses should take into account the job satisfaction, stress recognition, and hospital characteristics.
Purpose: The recent increase in electric scooter (e-scooter) use has been accompanied by an increase in injuries from e-scooter-related accidents. Studies have reported that most such injuries are minor, and physicians may therefore underestimate the severity of such injuries. This study investigated the types and severity of injuries caused by isolated e-scooter accidents (i.e., those that did not involve colliding with other cars or falling from heights). Methods: This prospective observational study was conducted from May to December 2021 at Dankook University Hospital tertiary medical center. The demographic data of patients injured in isolated e-scooter-related accidents were collected. All injuries were categorized by body part. Results: Fifty eligible patients visited our emergency department during the study period. Of these, 76% were categorized as nonemergency, and 62% were discharged after initial evaluation and treatment at the emergency department. Another 10% were admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU) and 18% to the ward, with nine patients receiving at least one operation. The average hospital stays were 2.4 days in the ICU and 9 days in the ward. One death occurred due to traumatic brain injury (overall mortality rate, 2%). Multiple fractures of the left third through ninth ribs combined with lung laceration and fractures of T12 and L4 were noted. Conclusions: Various types and severities of injuries can occur in isolated e-scooter accidents. While most such injuries are minor, some will require ICU admission or surgery, and deaths can occur. Physicians should not underestimate the severity of such injuries.
Lisfranc joint injuries are rare and account for 0.2% of all injuries. The pattern of Lisfranc injuries varies from low-energy ligamentous sprain to high-energy fractures or crushing injuries. Early diagnosis and appropriate treatment of Lisfranc injuries are important to prevent chronic foot pain and dysfunction.
Head injuries are the most common type of birth injuries. Among them, most of the injuries is limited to the scalp. and the prognosis is good enough to be unnoticed in some cases. Intracranial injuries caused by excessive forces during delivery are rare. However, since some of them can be fatal, it is necessary to suspect it at an early stage and evaluate thoroughly if there are abnormal findings in the patient.
This study was aimed at investigating the activities of a badminton club and designing smart wear to prevent sports injuries during badminton club activities. Everyone is familiar with sports in an aging society and clubs are gradually developing. Popular badminton club activities lead to frequent sports injuries, especially ankle injuries, which are a serious problem that hampers members' participation in sports. Therefore, this study aims to propose a prototype design for smart wear to prevent sports injuries, including ankle injuries. First, we identified the characteristics and considerations of members of badminton clubs, and the components of smart wear to prevent sports injuries. Second, members of the badminton clubs and an elite badminton player participated in a survey on the issues and requirements associated with wearing smart wear. Third, usage scenarios for smart wear were created based on literature reviews and the user assessment lists. Fourth, a prototype of the smart wear to prevent sports injuries including ankle injuries was created based on the scenarios. With the proposed smart wear, members of badminton clubs who may require assistance with sports injuries will be able to monitor said injuries, as well as their health condition, as avatars in visual games through a smart terminal. The visual game system will provide easier access to information about sports injuries and health. This smart sportswear will allow members of badminton clubs to prevent sports injuries and review their performance. This study can be utilized to design smart wear to prevent sports injuries and monitor sporting activities or bio-signals.
Purpose: Arterial injury in children is a challenging problem for its special characteristics. It is rare even during warfare. This review described a personal experience in the management and outcome of acute pediatric arterial injuries of extremities. Methods: Thirty-six children below age of 13 years were studied during period from 2004 through 2014 in Iraq. Results: Male patients were 27 (75%) and female were 9 (25%). Seven to twelve years old was the most affected age group. The incidence of iatrogenic injuries was greater in infants and toddlers while penetrating injuries were the most common in older children. Upper limbs arteries were affected in 17 (47.2%) and lower limb in 19 (52.8%) patients. Hard signs were the commonest mode of presentation (83.3%). Lateral wall tear and complete transection were the most frequent types of arterial injury (36.1% and 27.8% respectively). The most frequent procedures performed were end-to-end anastomosis and lateral arteriorrhaphy. Surgical outcome was good. In 27 cases distal pulsations were regained. Seven cases had impalpable distal pulses but still viable limbs. Limb length discrepancy was detected in one case. One case was complicated with limb loss. No death was recorded. Conclusion: Arterial injuries in children are age related. The proper treatment of arterial injuries in children requires high index of suspicion, early operative intervention and continuous postoperative follow-up throughout years of active growth. Angiogram has a limited role as a diagnostic tool in acute arterial injuries.
