  • In order to examine the unsaturated shear strength characteristics of compacted weathered gneiss soils, the constant water content compression (CWCC) test was carried out. Specimens were made by static compaction under two densities conditions. The shear behavior in accordance with an initial suction obtained by varying initial degrees of saturation was evaluated. The suction could be directly measured by the use of the ceramic disk and the pore-water pressure transducer. The results of the peak shear strength from the CWCC test were examined using the relationship with Mp line from triaxial test under the saturated state, that is, by means of the suction stress which was calculated using the measured suction. In addition, the applicability of the suctions stress to the unsaturated shear behaviour of compacted weathered gneiss soils was discussed by applying Suction stress-SWCC Method (SSM).

  • In this 1st report, the relationship between pure creep properties and initial strain was studied and also its acoustic emission test was performed during creep test at 500, 600 and $700^{\circ}C$. And the applicability of the acoustic emission technique was investigated to analyze the quantitive relationship between all the pure properties (creep strength, creep repture time or creep life, steady state creep rate, total creep rate, creep strain, total creep strain, etc.) and the initial strains as well as to analyze AE properties during the pure creep loading condition.

  • Although a number of methods have been proposed to predict the liquefaction potential, few methods have been developed by using the characteristic of material's microstructure. In this research, fundamental procedure is proposed for the assessment of liquefaction potential in saturated soils based on the Disturbed Sate Concept(DSC) model which can provide a unified constitutive model for the characterization of entire stress-strain behavior under cyclic loading. From this concept, the value of disturbance at threshold state (Critical Disturbance, $D_C$) in the deforming microstructure provides the basis for initial liquefaction. This method is verified with respect to data from Cyclic Truly Triaxial test for saturated Ottawa sand. Also, the relationship between liquefaction and initial confinig stress is defined using definition of $D_C$. It is believed that the new procedure for identifying liquefaction based on the DSC model can capture the behavior of liquefation, and as a result, it is shown to be on improvement over the available empirical procedures.

  • The cracking at the transverse diaphragm cutout is one of the most severe fatigue failures threatening orthotropic steel decks (OSDs), whose mechanisms and crack treatment techniques have not been fully studied. In this paper, full-scale experiments were first performed to investigate the fatigue performance of polished cutouts involving the effect of an artificial geometrical defect. Following this, comparative experimental testing for defective cutouts strengthened with carbon fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP) was carried out. Numerical finite element analysis was also performed to verify and explain the experimental observations. Results show that the combinative effect of the wheel load and thermal residual stress constitutes the external driving force for the fatigue cracking of the cutout. Initial geometrical defects are confirmed as a critical factor affecting the fatigue cracking. The principal stress 6 mm away from the free edge of the cutout can be adopted as the nominal stress of the cutout during fatigue evaluation, and the fatigue resistance of polished cutouts is higher than Grade A in AASHTO specification. The bonded CFRP system is highly effective in extending the fatigue life of the defective cutouts. The present study provides some new insights into the fatigue evaluation and repair of OSDs.

  • Al-brass material is generally used at the state of plastic deformation, for example; bending, extension of bell mouth at shell and tube type heat exchanger. And SCC(stress corrosion cracking) of Al-brass material will be affected by residual stress as plastic deformation. SCC results from synergism between mechanical factor and corrosion environment. Mechanical factor is stress that directly relates with stress intensity factor at the crack tip. This paper was studied on the effect of stress on SCC of Al-brass tube under in $3.5\%$ NaCl. + $0.1\%\;NH_4OH$ solution by constant displacement tester. Increasing of acidified water flow into sea and speeds up corrosion rate of Al-brass which is used as a tube material of vessel heat exchanger by polluted coast seawater. The experimental results are as follow The latent time of SCC occurrence gets longer as the initial stress intensity factor($K_{Ii}$) gets lower The main crack was propagated as the initial stress intensity factor($K_{Ii}$) gets higher, and secondary cracks occurred by electro-chemical factor a(ter stage of released stress. Dezincification phase showed around the crack, and the range of dezincification gets wider as the initial stress intensity factor($K_{Ii}$) gets higher.

  • This study purports to analyze equally stressed surfaces in tension-membrane structures through a geometrically nonlinear approach. It adopts the formulation of a 4-node quadrilateral isoparametric plane stress element considering the orthotropic characteristic of membrane textures. Tension structures, which include cables and tension membranes, such as a cable dome initially exhibit unstable conditions because no initial internal stiffness such as bending stiffness is present. Such a structural system requires prestressing to the tension members to attain a stable state. A tension-membrane structure retains a stable three dimensional curved surface as a structural shape. This analytical process for finding the geometry is referred to as Shape Finding Analysis. In order to assess the validity of this study, we examine equally stressed surfaces of saddle and catenary shape shell structures and carry out pertinent stress analyses

  • The creep rate is affected by the temperature and in fact. if the temperature above $T_M/2(T_M:melting\;point)$. The aim of the present investigation is to study the relationship of static creep and cyclic creep behavior of pure copper and the formulation of these phenomena with the special attention to the instantaneous strain. strain rate from time and number of cycles have the same inclination Steady state creep rate depend upon maximum stress and can be expressed as linear function according to Power law creep equations Creep rupture time has relation with creep rate. and it make a group represented as the same direct line regardless of max stress, stress ratio and the temperature. Initial strain effect on continuous creep deformation. and have guantitative relationship between elastic and Plastic strain. LMP have similar tendency than OSDP and MHP according to temperature

  • Magnesium alloy sheets in room temperature have unusual mechanical properties such as high in-plane anisotropy/asymmetry of yield stress and hardening behavior. In this paper, the continuum plasticity models considering the plastic behavior of AZ31B Mg alloy sheet were derived. A new hardening law based on modified two-surface model was developed to consider the general stress-strain response of metals including Bauschinger effect, transient behavior and the unusual asymmetry. Three deformation modes observed during the continuous tension/compression tests were mathematically formulated with simplified relations between the state of deformation and their histories. To include the anisotropy and asymmetry of the initial yield stress, the Drucker-Prager's pressure dependent yield surface was modified by adding anisotropic constants.

  • The object of this study is shape finding and cutting pattern generation of membrane structures under the following assumptions : (1) material is linearly elastic (2) stress state is plane stress. Cable and membrane structures should introduce the nonlinear analysis considering geometric nonlinearity because these structures deform largely under the external loads. The analysis procedure is consisted of three steps considering geometric nonlinearity unlike any other structures. First step is the shape finding analysis to determine the initial equilibrium shape. Second step is the stress-deformation analysis to investigate the behaviors of structures under various external loads. Once a satisfactory shape has been found, a cutting pattern based on the shape finding analysis may be generated from the view point of construction. In this paper, (1) shape finding analysis formulation and an example, (2) cutting pattern determination procedure using weighted least-square minimization flattening method and some results are presented.
