  • The $UBVI_{KC}$ CCD photometry was performed in the central region(${\sim}20'{\times}20'$) of the extremely young open cluster IC1805. Member stars were selected in the (B-V)-(U-B) and (V-I)-(B-V) color-color planes. Applying recent stellar evolutionary models, we derived the age, age-spread, and initial mass function(IMF) of the cluster. IC1805 was found to be an extremely young($t_{age}{\sim}1.5Myr$) and has a flat IMF with the slope of ${\Gamma}=-1.0{\pm}0.2$.

  • In order to determine the effects of hydrostatic pressure on the mechanical behavior of graphite fiber reinforced composites, the modulus, fracture stress(maximum stress), and fracture strain of graphite/epoxy composites have been determined as a function of pressure. Composite specimens used in this study were 90-deg unidirectional and had a 60% fiber volume fraction. Compressive tests under five different pressure levels were conducted. The result showed the modulus measured from as initial slope of stress-strain curve increased bilinearly with pressure with a break at 200 MPa. It was also found that fracture stress and fracture strain increased in a linear fashion with pressure.

  • An improvement over the method of pore size distribution analysis has been made in this work. The improved method is based upon the idea of the micro pore analysis of Mikhail, Brunauer, and Bodor, and utilizes the V-t curve of nitrogen adsorption. Two pore models are assumed, and the deviation of the initial slope of the V-t plot is ascribed to the pore filling and to the adsorption on the wall of unfilled pores. The improved method of this work is very convenient in that the analysis starts from the small pore regions. The method of this work is however quite distinct from the similar V-t plot method proposed by Sellevold and Radjy. The proposed method is applied to a few adsorbents, and very satisfactory results are obtained. The cumulative surface area calculated by this method also agrees very well with those obtained by the BET plot or by the t-method.

  • In order to characterize the permeability of small unilamellar vesicles (SUV), efflux of 6-carboxyfluorescein (6-CF) from the vesicles was monitored spectrophotofluorometrically. Since the entrapped highly quenched 6-CF (200 mM) became fluorescent upon release from the vesicles, the 6-CF could be used as an efflux probe. SUV containing entrapped 6-CF was prepared from egg phosphatidylcholine and separated by gel filtration on Sepharose 4B. Observed change of relative fluorescent intensity with time was sigmoidal. From this curve, the parameter of permeability was determined either by half-time or a released amount per unit time from the initial slope. Half-time of efflux of prepared SUV having 302 ng phospholipid/ml in 10 mM Tris-HCl buffer pH 7.4 was 21.0 min at $37{\circ}C$. Various factors which could affect the half-time were examined including temperature, pH, salt, and vesicle concentration. In particular the effect of vesicle concentration on the efflux revealed that the permeability can be a function of the concentration.

  • We present deep UBVIc and Hα photometry for the young open cluster IC 1590 which is at the center of the HII region NGC 281. From Ha index, 39 Hα emission stars and 15 Hα emission candidates are selected. The reddening law toward IC 1590 is slightly abnormal (RV,cl = 3.6 ± 0.2). The distance modulus of IC 1590 obtained from the reddening-free (Q', QVλ) diagrams is 12.4 ± 0.1 mag (d = 3.02 ± 0.14 kpc), which is consistent with distance d = 2.91 ± 0.42 kpc from the parallax of Gaia DR2 catalogue within the error range. We also determined the age and mass function of IC 1590 using the stellar evolution models and PMS evolutionary tracks. The median age of PMS stars is 2.4 ± 2.2 Myr. The initial mass function (IMF) of IC 1590 is the Salpeter-type IMF with a slope of = -1.26 ± 0.14 for m > 1 M⊙ stars.

  • The properties of sea water in deep-sea are still quite poorly understood, even though those of the surface water have been sufficiently investigated. In this study, the specific conductance of sea water was measured under the circumstances : pressure of 1 to 2,000 bars and temperature 10 to $35^{\circ}C$ as well as over the concentration of 6.228 to 19.372 per mil chloronity. The specific conductance gave the linearity with the given pressure. The initial slope, ${\triangle}k/{\triangle}P$ of the specific conductance n versus the pressure P over the pressure 1 to 1,000 bars showed a large positive value, but the second slope over the pressure 1,000 to 2,000 bars was relatively less positive value. And our equations were comparable with the empirical formular obtained by Horns et al. (1963).

  • The estimation of nugget sizes was attempted by utilizing the artificial neural networks method. Artificial neural networks is a highly simplified model of the biological nervous system. Artificial neural networks is composed of a large number of elemental processors connected like biological neurons. Although the elemental processors have only simple computation functions, because they are connected massively, they can describe any complex functional relationship between an input-output pair in an autonomous manner. The electrode head movement signal, which is a good indicator of corresponding nugget size was determined by measuring the each test specimen. The sampled electrode movement data and the corresponding nugget sizes were fed into the artificial neural networks as input-output pairs to train the networks. In the training phase for the networks, the artificial neural networks constructs a fuctional relationship between the input-output pairs autonomusly by adjusting the set of weights. In the production(estimation) phase when new inputs are sampled and presented, the artificial neural networks produces appropriate outputs(the estimates of the nugget size) based upon the transfer characteristics learned during the training mode. Experimental verification of the proposed estimation method using artificial neural networks was done by actual destructive testing of welds. The predicted result by the artifficial neural networks were found to be in a good agreement with the actual nugget size. The results are quite promising in that the real-time estimation of the invisible nugget size can be achieved by analyzing the process variable without any conventional destructive testing of welds.

  • Shear properies of geosynthetic/geosynthetic and geosynthetic/soil interfaces which are widely met in landfill sites were evaluated from the inclined board tests. The inclined board testing apparatus is known to reproduce the shear behavior on the low normal stress most accurately. In this study, the friction angle of each interface was estimated and the tensile force mobilized at the geosynthetic was measured as well. The test results showed that the friction angle of each interface and the tensile force of the geosynthetics depended on the amount of normal stress, the type of the geosynthetics used, and the combinations of geosynthetics and soils. In addition, the sand/geotextile/geomembrane interface system was simulated in this study, and it was observed that the tensile force developed at the geomembrane decreased due to the protection effect of the geotextile located above the geomembrane. The test results of this research was compared with those of direct shear tests published, too. Finally, by comparing the measured tensile force of the geosynthetics when the initial displacement of the box occurs, when the slope is called as the critical slope, with suggested analytic solution, the accuracy of analytic solution and the applicability to design were identified.

  • Rainfall infiltration test under one dimensional condition is conducted to evaluate the effect of rainfall intensity on seepage velocity and infiltration characteristics for initial unsaturated sediment. Experimental results are compared with those numerical simulations with respect to variations of pore water pressure, degree of saturation and discharge velocity with time, and both results give good agreement. High rainfall intensity tends to increase seepage velocity almost linearly. But it shows rapid increase as rainfall intensity approaches saturated hydraulic conductivity of the sediment. In addition, the upper part of wetting front depth is partially saturated, not fully. Therefore, actual wetting front depth is considered to advance faster than theoretical prediction, which leads to slope instability of unsaturated slope due to surface rainfall.

  • In this study, experiments on the SWCC were performed in order to find out the characteristics of unsaturated soil and to analyze the stability of unsaturated weathered slopes with rainfall-induced wetting. Several soil types classified by mixture portion of clay (CH) in the weathered soil (SW) were used in experimental tests. To achieve the SWCC, the filter paper method was used on SW with varying clay contents. A tensiometer test was used for measuring wetting front suction of the soils in a laboratory with varying relative densities. Based on the experimental results, it is shown that the wetting front suction increases as clay contest of mixture soil increases : in particular, the wetting front suction increases sharply as the clay contents increase. It is also found that wetting front suction affects the initial wetting band depth and stability of the slope.
