  • This paper describes development of a new displacement sensor for intelligent suspension system in which the damping force has been controlled by MR fluid. Most of the current vehicle height sensors have been installed at external place of the damper and connected to that by mechanical linkages so far. The developed sensor has a new mechanism which detects movement of the sensor rod same as connecting rod in the suspension damper by using a GMR Sensor and converts it to the relative displacement from an initial position.

  • Techniques measuring Maxwell displacement current (MDC) and LB films surface measuring technique have been applied to the study of monolayers of polyamic acid containing azobenzene. MDCs was generated from monolayers on the water surface by monolayer compression and expansion. It was generated when the area per molecule was about $103{\AA}^2\;and\;78{\AA}^2$ just before the initial rise of the surface pressure during the 1st and 2nd mixed monolayer compressions cycle, respectively. It was the maximum of MDCs appeared at the molecular area just before the initial rise of surface pressure in compression cycles, and we have found that the increase of aggregations causes the noticeable increase of the surface roughness.

  • The analysis of an air spring characteristics is necessary to design and control automotive air suspension system properly. A mathematical model of an air spring was derived in light of energy conservation first. Then static and dynamic experiments of the air spring have been fulfilled. The static stiffness with various initial pressures and effective areas were obtained from the static experimental results. Theoretical static stiffness obtained by using the mathematical model and effective area data is in close accordance with the experimental estimation. The dynamic experimental results show that the hysteresis in displacement-force cycle decreases when the frequency of the harmonic displacement excitation signal increases, but it does not change too much as the frequency is higher than 1Hz. And the dynamic stiffness goes up with increasing of the initial pressure and the excitation frequency.

  • In this article, an analytical solution of the dynamical behavior in an orthotropic non-homogeneity elastic material using for elastodynamics equations is investigated. The effects of the magnetic field, the initial stress, and the non-homogeneity on the radial displacement and the corresponding stresses in an orthotropic material are investigated. The analytical solution for the elastodynamic equations has solved regarding displacements. The variation of the stresses, the displacement, and the perturbation magnetic field have shown graphically. Comparisons are made with the previous results in the absence of the magnetic field, the initial stress, and the non-homogeneity. The present study has engineering applications in the fields of geophysical physics, structural elements, plasma physics, and the corresponding measurement techniques of magneto-elasticity.

  • The purpose of this study is to propose the method of determining the initial pneumatic membrane structures surface and stresses and displacements. Tension structure such as pneumatic membrane structures is stabilized by their initial prestress and air pressure. The process to find initial structural overall shape of tension structures produced by initial prestress called shape finding. One of the most important factor for the design of membrane structures is to search initial smooth surface, because unlike steel or concrete building elements which resist loads in bending, all tension structure forces are carried within the surface by membrane stress. The result for initial surface of pneumatic membrane element and maximum displacement in large deformation in analysis is compared with well-known nonlinear numerical method such as Newton-raphson method and dynamic relaxation method

  • A comparative study on dynamic and static measurement of initial stiffness was conducted. Because soil stiffness decreases even at very small strains, the initial stiffness has been measured by dynamic tests using shear wave velocity measurement. On the other hand, due to the advance of local strain measurement, the triaxial testing device is capable of measuring the static initial stiffness. It has been known that initial stiffness measured by static triaxial tests is generally lower than that measured by dynamic tests possibly due to the limitation of static measurement of displacement at very small strains. This study presents experimental results indicating that the elastic shear moduli could be the same both in dynamic and static measurements owing to the soil anisotropy induced by anisotropic stresses.

  • Orthodontic tooth movement is closely related to the stress on the periodontal tissue. In this research the finite element method was used to observe the stress distribution and to find the best condition for effective tooth movement in the case of unilateral molar expansion. The author constructed the model of lower dental arch of average Korean adult and used $.032'\times.032'\times60mm$ TMA wire. The wire was deflected in the horizontal and vertical direction to give the 16 conditions. The following results were obtained ; 1. When the moment and force were controlled properly the movement of anchor tooth was minimized and the movement of moving tooth was maximized. 2. As the initial horizontal deflection increased the buccal displacement of both teeth was also increased. As the initial horizontal deflection increased the lingual movement of anchor tooth and the buccal movement of moving tooth increased. 3. When the initial horizontal and vertical deflection rate was 1.5 the effective movement of moving tooth was observed with minimal displacement of anchor tooth.

  • The plastic hinge method and the plastic zone method are extensively adopted in displacement-based elements and force-based elements respectively for second-order inelastic analysis. The former enhances the computational efficiency with relatively less accurate results while the latter precisely predicts the structural behavior but generally requires more computer time. The displacement-based elements receive criticism mainly on plasticity dominated problems not only in accuracy but also in longer computer time to redistribute the forces due to formation of plastic hinges. The multi-element-per-member model relieves this problem to some extent but will induce a new problem in modeling of member initial imperfections required in design codes for direct analysis. On the contrary, a force-based element with several integration points is sufficient for material yielding. However, use of more integration points or elements associated with fiber section reduces computational efficiency. In this paper, a new force-based element equipped with stress-resultant plasticity model with minimal computational cost is proposed for second-order inelastic analysis. This element is able to take the member initial bowing into account such that one-element-per-member model is adequate and complied with the codified requirements of direct analysis. This innovative solution is new and practical for routine design. Finally, several examples demonstrate the validity and accuracy of the proposed method.

  • In this paper low-velocity impact response and damage of composite laminates is analytically investigated. A modified displacement field of plate considering initially loaded in-plane strain is proposed. From the displacement field a finite element equation on structural behavior of composite laminate is newly induced and a computational program is coded. Numerical results using the FEM code is compared with the numerical ones from reference. Additional numerical analysis is performed on another impact condition and effect of initial in-plane load is reviewed. Potential delamination damage area in the first inter-ply surface from bottom of laminate is approximated and effect of initial in-plane load and impact condition is also reviewed.
