The adsorption charateristics of lead(II) ions on Aspergillus niger and Rhizopus arrhizus were investigated. Adsorption amount of A. niger and R. arrhizus was about 95 mg/g and 25 mg/g, respectively. These biomass was approached to adsorption equilibrium within reaction time of 1hr because of their high reactivity. The uptake of lead ion by A. niger was less sensitivity than it by R. arrhizus on the inhibition effect of alkali metals and the decreasing ratio of uptake of lead ion of A. niger and R. arrhizus by inhibition effect of alkali metals was 37% and 50%, respectively. In pre-treatment on these biomass, NaOH treatment was contributed high adsorption capacity to these biomass. Then, adsorption amount of A. niger and R. allhizus was increased about 25 mg/g and 10 mg/g, respectively. In isotherm for the adsorption of lead ion based on Freundlich equation, 1/n value of A. niger and R. ar고izus was calculated the range of 0.28-0.56 and 0.44-0.67, respectively.

In order to give pulp surfaces anti-bacterial functionality and photo-catalytic deodorant ability, functional pulps was made using a surface modification method with Ag nano-colloidal solution and $TiO_2$ filler. Hygiene paper was made with the specially modified pulp, and anti-bacterial and deodorant tests were carried out. The Ag nano-colloidal solution was coated on the surface of the pulp using the high pressurized gas phase squirt through the spray nozzle mounted on the hybridization system. The surface modified functional pulp was hybridized with the optimum ratio of $TiO_2$(fine particle) to pulp(core particle) under the condition of $6,000{\sim}10,000$ rpm for $3{\sim}7$ minutes in the system. The anti-bacterial functionality of the hygiene paper was confirmed by the halo test in which the formation of the clear zone around the hygiene paper sample was observed. The inhibition growth test using MIC bioscreen C showed the inhibition growth effect of the bacteria as the reaction time was increased. The photo-catalytic effect measurement of the $TiO_2$ for 4 hours of the reaction showed $50{\sim}60%$ of decomposition rate, reaching over 60% for 5 hours of the reaction.
The rhizoma of Zingiber officinale has been used as antiemetic, expectorants, stomachache relieving drugs and digestive accelerators. From the observation of antigastritic action of the methanol extract of the rhizoma, it was fractionated with hexane, chloroform, ethyl acetate and butanol, followed by bioassay on antigastritic and antiulcerative activity. The hexane and the chloroform fraction reduced significantly HCl ethanol induced gastric lesion at the dose of 370 and 210 mg/kg, p.o., respectively. On the gastric ulceration and gastric secretion in pylorus-ligated rats, the hexane fraction decreased the volume of gastric secretion and acid output, and also increased pH at the dose of 370 mg/kg, i.d.. It showed considerable curative ratio of acetic acid induced ulcer without inhibition of indomethacin induced gastric lesion. The methanol extract showed low acute toxicity with minimum lethal dose of more than 3000 mg/kg, p.o. in mice. In conclusion, Zingiberis rhizoma exhibited antigastric and antiulcerative activity which might be attributable to inhibition of gastric secretion. It is revealed that the active component may be present in the hexane fraction.
Monoclonal antibodies against Taka virus, a variant of Newcastle disease virus (NDV), were produced to compare the antigenicites of several avian paramyxoviruses including NDV. It was also used to study the activesite(s) of haemagglutin (HA) and neuraminidase activities of NDV. Five independent hybrid cell lines, which produced monoclonal antibodies against haemagglutinin-neuraminidase (HN) molecule of Taka virus, were established. From the results of the cross haemagglutination-inhibition(HI) test the monoclonal antibodies, the HN molecule of Taka virus seemed to have at least three different antigenic determinats; one was specific for all NDV strain tested, the second was only for Taka virus and the third was for Take virus, Banger and Yucaipa Furthermore the differences in the ratio of HI to neuraminidase-inhibition titers suggested that the active sites involved in HA and neuraminidase activities might be different from each other. However, since each of five monoclonal anitbodies was not especially specific for either HA or neuraminidase, the possibility that a single active site on the HN molecule may be responsible for both activities has not been excluded.

Bortezomib (BTZ) is a proteasome inhibitor used to treat multiple myeloma (MM). However, the induction of peripheral neuropathy is one of the major concerns in using BTZ to treat MM. In the current study, we have explored the effects of BTZ (0.01-5 nM) on rat neural stem cells (NSCs). BTZ (5 nM) induced cell death; however, the percentage of neurons was increased in the presence of mitogens. BTZ reduced the B-cell lymphoma 2 (Bcl-2)/Bcl-2 associated X protein ratio in proliferating NSCs and differentiated cells. Inhibition of βIII-tubulin (TUBB3) degradation was observed, but not inhibition of glial fibrillary acidic protein degradation, and a potential PEST sequence was solely found in TUBB3. In the presence of growth factors, BTZ increased cAMP response element-binding protein (CREB) phosphorylation, brain-derived neurotrophic factor (Bdnf) transcription, BDNF expression, and Tubb3 transcription in NSCs. However, in the neuroblastoma cell line, SH-SY5Y, BTZ (1-20 nM) only increased cell death without increasing CREB phosphorylation, Bdnf transcription, or TUBB3 induction. These results suggest that although BTZ induces cell death, it activates neurogenic signals and induces neurogenesis in NSCs.
The effects of initial concentration, flow rate, and recycle ratio on the removal efficiency of phenol were studied in a tapered fluidized bed reactor packed with activated carbon which was attached with Candida tropicalis. The optimum conditions of Candida tropicalis were showed that pH was 7.0 and temperature was $30^{\circ}C$, and the specific growth rate of Candida tropicalis was satisfied with the Monod equation up to 500 mg/L of phenol, and beyond it the inhibition of substrate was found. According to the increases of initial concentration and flow rate, the removal efficiency was decreased, as the recycle ratio was increased, the removal efficiency was increased. In the case of flow rate of 10mL/sec and the recycle ratio of 2, the removal efficiency was 90% above for the all of initial concentration. The removal rate of phenol was the first order reaction in this system, and the rate equation of reaction was as follows.

In this study, the optimal extraction conditions for three medicinal herbs as functional sources against inflammatory and arthritic diseases were developed. Traditional medicinal herbs were screened for their inhibition of hyaluronidase (HAse) activity and nitric oxide (NO) synthesis. For the screening of anti-inflammatory properties, ethanolic extracts of 53 species of traditional medicinal herb were examined. We confirmed that Astragalus membranaceus (A.R.), Schisandra chinensis (S.F.), and Platycodon grandiflorum (P.G.) inhibit NO production. For extraction from all three herbs simultaneously, an ethanol concentration of 95%, a 1:2:1 mixture ratio, and at 50 rpm mixing speed, for over 12 h and at $30^{\circ}C$ was the best condition for optimal extract yield and NO inhibition effects. HAse inhibition from the three herb extraction was three fold higher than single samples. The ethanol extracts were fractionated with various solvents (n-hexane, chloroform, ethyl acetate, n-butanol, and water). The ethyl acetate-soluble fraction of the herb mixture showed the highest extract yield (13%) and NO inhibition effects (73%). In conclusion, this study provides experimental evidence that a mixture of P.G., A.R., and S.F. could be used as a source of antioxidant ingredients in the food industry.

This study is for checking the possibility of ginseng complex as cosmetic materials. For this we carried out biological active evaluation about anti-inflammatory and whitening effects by using ethanol extract of ginseng complex. Samples were prepared by extracting 70% ethanol from each of Panax ginseng C. A. Meyer (A), Phellinus linteus (B) and Pinus rigida Mill. (C), and mixing them at a ratio of (A) 1 : (B) 1 : (C) 0.5. In order to evaluate the anti-inflammatory effects of the samples in macrophages (RAW 264.7 cells), MTT assay was used to evaluate the toxicity of the samples and the inhibitory activity of nitric oxide production and the expression levels of inflammation-related proteins and genes. To evaluate the whitening effect of the samples in melanoma (B16F10 cell), MTT assay was used to evaluate the toxicity of the sample, cellular tyrosinase inhibition, and melanin contents. The inhibitory activity of nitric oxide in the LPS-induced RAW 264.7 cells was 71.2% at $25{\mu}g/mL$ concentration and western blot analysis showed that the expression of iNOS and COX-2 protein decreased in a concentration-dependent manner. Inhibition of tyrosinase activity showed 36.8% inhibition at $50{\mu}g/mL$ concentration of ginseng complex and inhibition of melanin contents showed 47.8% inhibition at $50{\mu}g/mL$ concentration. From the results of the experiment, it was confirmed that the ginseng complex had excellent anti-inflammatory and whitening effect and could be used as a safe natural cosmetic material in the future.
This study, to enhance the sterilization, browning inhibition and precooling effect of electrolyzed oxidizing water(EOW) as cleaning water on food industry, was carried out to investigate the efficacy of electrolyzed oxidizing water(EOW) with 0.85% NaCl, 0.5% ethanol, polysorbate 80 of 1 ppm, 0.5% lemon juice and 0.5% citron juice. Escherichia coli KCTC 1039 with initial count of 5.63$\times$10$\^$8/ CFU/mL were reduced to <10$^1$CFU/mL after 15∼30 sec when it was treated by electrolyzed oxidizing water added with various food additives. Bacillus cereus KCTC 1012 were reduced to <10$^1$ CFU/mL after 2 minutes treatment with electrolyzed oxidizing water containing polysorbate 80 and ethanol. Iactobacillus plantarum KCTC 3108 were reduced to <10$^1$CFU/mL after 30 sec treatment with electrolyzed oxidizing water containing polysorbate 80, citron juice and lemon juice, respectively. Erwinia carotovora subsp. carotovora KCTC 2776 were reduced to <10$^1$CFU/mL after 30 sec treatment with electrolyzed oxidizing water containing polysorbate 80 and lemon juice. Browning inhibition effect was determined by comparison of polyphenol oxidase activity. Inhibition ratio of polyphenol oxidase was approximately 62∼84% in most treatments with the exception of 57% and 25% inhibition by 0.5% ascorbic acid and polysorbate 80, respectively. Sliced potato dipped in electrolyzed oxidizing water containing NaCl and citron juice for 30 minutes showed significantly low PPO activity, 64 units in treatment with NaCl and 91 units in treatment with citron juice. At the same time, changes in color value(△E) of sliced potato was below 3 in most treatments.

Pseudomonas sp. F721 isolated from soil produced a substance related in seeds germination inhibition. Addition of phytohormone, and GA (gibberellin acid) in the culture broth elevated production of the germination inhibition substance. The production of the substance was optimized in the culture conditions of $35^{\circ}C$, pH 9.0, 150 rpm, 48 hr, glucose 0.5% (w/v), and innoculation ratio 1.0% (v/v). The physical and chemical stability of the substance in the variety of pH ranging from 2.0 to 12.0 and from freezing to $100^{\circ}C$ were shown. The germination inhibition substance suppressed 90% of germination compared with that of the control experiment in a few days.
