Tissue conditioners have been used for treatment of denture stomatitis caused by wearing of dentures. Early studies pointed out Candide albicans (C. albicans) as main etiologic factor, and antifugal agents were added for control of the species. But there is a little information about broad comparison on the effect of tissue conditioners and antifungal agents added. The purpose of the present study was to compare the inhibiting effect of four tissue conditioners and one temporary soft liner on the growth of C. albicans for treatment of denture stomatitis using gel diffusion method by measuring diameter of the zone of growth inhibition. Three antifungal agents were added to each material for evaluation of the effect of added agents. Finally, observation was made to evaluate the effect of the loss of antifungal elements by aging of the specimen. The results of this study were obtained as follows : 1. Tempo had remarkable antifungal effect showing the zone of growth inhibition as 2.35 mm at 1st day, and was most effective on End: 4th and 7th day from incubation (p<0.05). But Coecomfort, Dura conditioner, Visco-gel, Coe-soft had little antifungal effect from the 1st day of incubation. 2. Nystatin was most effective showing 9.60-12.04 mm of zone of inhibition at the 1st day from incubation. The antifungal properties were reduced to amphotericin B, chlorhexidine and materials without agent (p<0.05), and the effect was diminished by time. 3. As pretreatment with amphotericin B, nystatin, chlorhexidine, Tempo was very effective at the 1st day from incubation showing zone of inhibition as 3.65, 12.04, 4.78 mm with addition of each agent. Dura conditioner had strongest antifungal effect at the next day as 2.86, 5.33, 1.29 mm of zone of inhibition, and yielding results of Coe-comfort, Tempo, Coe-soft was shown at 4th and 7th day from incubation (p<0.05). Taken all together, tissue conditioners have little antifungal effect except Tempo. Formation of the zone of growth inhibition was due to agents amphotericin B, nystatin, chlorhexidine and nystatin was most effective. Conclusively, it is advisable to select material which is effective on the growth of C. albican and consider addition of antifungal agents for treatment of denture stomatitis.
Recently endogenous digitalis-like substances were found in the blood of various cardiovascular diseases and they have been considered one of the causes of evoking hypertension. However, the mechanism of endogenous digitalis-like substances-induced hypertension is not clarified yet. Therefore, the effects of Na-K pump inhibition on the contractility of vascular smooth muscle[conduit and resistant artery were investigated, using organ bath and bioassay experiment. Aortic and carotid arterial rings[conduit artery and the branches of brachial and superior mesenteric artery[resistant artery were used to find the effect of Na-K pump inhibition. The results obtained were as followes;The magnitudes of contractions induced by norepinephrine, serotonin, or acetylcholine in all these arteries were significantly increased by the inhibition of Na-K pump. The increased contractile responses to these agonists, especially to serotonin, were much more prominant in resistant arteries. Nitroprusside-induced relaxations were attenuated by Na-K pump inhibition and there were no significant differences in the effects of Na-K pump inhibition on nitroprusside-induced relaxations of these blood vessels. Endothelium-dependent relaxation was suppressed by the inhibition of Na-K pump, especially by the administration of ouabain, and this inhibitory effect was much more prominent in the branches of superior mesenteric artery, compared with other arteries. In the branches of superior mesenteric arteries, endothelium-dependent relaxation was completely blocked by ouabain. The release of EDRF was partially suppressed by Na-K pump inhibition.From the above results, it is suggested that the hypertension due to the increase in vascular resistance can be evoked by the inhibition of Na-K pump and endogenous digitalis-like substances induce hypertension through this mechanism.
This study was performed to determine the antioxidative effect of the hexane, dichloromethane, ethylacetate, butanol and water fractions of Ganoderma lucidum extracts on the inhibition of malondialdehyde(MDA) and bovine serum albumin(BSA) conjugation reaction, the inhibition of lipid peroxidation and the scavenging effect on 1,1-diphenyl-2-picryl-hydrazyl(DPPH) radical, the antimutagenic capacity as measured by the Ames test and the inhibitory effect on cancer cell. Ganoderma lucidum is believed to have possible antioxidative capacities, although the results have varied according to the assay method. The most effective antioxidative capacity was inhibition of lipid peroxidation. Among the five fractions, water fraction showed strong inhibition rates on MDA & BSA conjugation reaction, and ethylacetate fractions showed the most effective inhibition rate on lipid peroxidation and scavenging effect on DPPH radical. The indirect and direct antimutagenic effects of ethanol extracts of Ganoderma lucidum were examined by Ames test using Salmonella typhimurium TA98 and TA100. Among the samples, the water fraction did not have any antimutagenic effect. The inhibition rates on mutagenicity in the presence of 2.5 mg/plate were nearly $100\%$ for Salmonella typhimurium TA98 and TA100 except the hexane fraction of the direct mutagenicity mediated by 2-Nitrofluorene in Salmonella typimurium TA98($64.69\%$). Under the 2.5 mg/plate concentration, the inhibitory effects of hexane and dichloromethane fraction were superior to that of the other fractions on the direct mutagenicity for Salmonella typhimurium TA100 and indirect mutagenicity for Salmonella typhimurium TA98 and TA100. The inhibitory effect of Ganoderma lucidum extracts on cell proliferation in HeLa and MCF-7 was investigated by U test. The dichloromethane fraction showed highly antiproliferative effect in HeLa and MCF-7($IC_{50}$: 0.122 mg/mL, 0.272 mg/mL, respectively) cells while the water faction had a weak inhibitory effect($IC_{50}$: 0.691 mg/mL, 10.919 mg/mL respectively). These results suggest that Ganoderma lucidum may have antioxidative, antimutagenic and anticancer capacities and may be a candidate of the prevention and dietetic treatment of chronic diseases and the development of antioxidative, antimutagenic and anticancer functional food.
Purpose: The first purpose of this study was to determine the effect of reciprocal inhibition that influence changes in pain when applied to patients with culf cramps. The second purpose of this study was to determine the effect of manual therapy on iliaosacral joint that influence changes number of occurrences when applied to patients with frequent nocturnal culf cramps. Methods: The first study using reciprocal inhibition techniques to 20 patients with calf cramps and saw the change in pain. The second study using manual therapy on iliaosacral joint to 2 patients with frequent nocturnal culf cramps and saw the change in number of occurrences during the week. Results: The pain and number of occurrences were significantly difference between pre-treatment and post treatment. Conclusion: Based on the results of this study, we found that reciprocal inhibition decreased pain and that manual therapy on iliaosacral joint decreased number of occurrences.
This study was divided into two parts. In the first experiment, the in vitro antimicrobial effect was tested in order to evaluate the effect of vapors, and the effectiveness of the nonspecific endodontic medicaments (formocresol, camphorated parachlorophenol and eugenol). In the second experiment, the intracanal effect was tested in vitro under simulated clinical condition. The actual bactericidal effect of the nonspecific endodontic medicaments (formocresol, camphorated parachlorophenol and eugenol) was quantitated. The results were obtained as follows: 1. The zone of inhibition was appeared on the vapors of formocresol only, however there were no zone of inhibition appeared on the vapors of camphorated parachlorophenol and eugenol. 2. Formocresol produced the widest zone of inhibition and eugenol, the next and camphorated parachlorophenol, the narrowest. 3. All of the tested medicaments were vaporized in the root canal. They proved to be the effective antimicrobial activity in the root canal. 4. All of the tested medicaments were showed more bactericidal effect at 72 hours than 48 hours. 5. In comparing with the bactericidal effect of the tested medicaments in the root canal, formocresol was showed the most bactericidal medicament, camphorated parachlorophenol was showed the least. 6. Complete sterilization of the root canal was not achieved in any medicaments applied in this study.
Objectives : The present study was designed to investigate effects of mixed extract from korean medicinal herbs (MIX) on oxidation/reduction reaction-related and aging-related enzyme in vitro. Methods : We performed MTT assay, collagenase inhibition assay, elastase inhibition assay, tyrosinase inhibition assay, DPPH free radical scavenging assay, SOD-like activity and xanthine oxidase inhibition assay. Results : Recently, many studies have reported that elastin is also involved in inhibiting or repairing wrinkle formation, although collagen is a major factor in the skin wrinkle formation. The MIX showed 97% inhibition of collagenase activity, and 64% inhibition of elastase activity at 1 mg/ml concentration of MIX, next only to positive control, which indicate good efficacy for anti-wrinkle ingredient. Also it's treatment showed 34% inhibition of tyrosinase activity, to relate whitening effect, at the same dose of MIX. Antioxidant activities were determined by DPPH radical scavenging, xanthine oxidase (XO) inhibiting activity and SOD-like activity. Also these scavenging, XO-inhibiting and SOD-like activities were measured in 91%, 80%, and 63% inhibition, respectively, at a treated dose of 1 mg/ml, compare to control. Conclusions : These results suggest that possibility of mixed korean medicinal herbs as a functional ingredient for anti-wrinkle and whitening, anti-oxidation and anti-aging cosmetic formula.
In this study, the inhibition of ammonia on anaerobic digestion of butyric acid was evaluated and the potential alleviating effects of such ammonia inhibition by the addition of magnetite particles were investigated. Independent anaerobic batch tests fed with butyric acid as a sole organic source were conducted in twenty 60-mL glass bottles with 10 different treatment conditions, comprising ammonia: 0.5, 2.0, 4.0, 6.0, and 7.0 g total ammonia nitrogen (TAN)/L and magnetite particles: 0 mM and 20 mM. The increase in ammonia concentration did not cause significant inhibition on methane yield; however, a significant inhibition on lag time and specific methane production rate was observed. The IC50 in the control treatments (without magnetite addition) was estimated as 6.2654 g TAN/L. A similar inhibition trend was observed in magnetite-added treatments; however, the inhibition effect by ammonia was significantly alleviated in lag time and specific methane production rate when compared to those in the control treatments. The lag time was shortened by 1.6-46.3%, specific methane production rate was improved by 6.0-69.0%. In the magnetite-added treatments, IC50 was estimated as 8.5361 g TAN/L. This study successfully demonstrated the potential of magnetite particles as an enhancer in anaerobic digestion of butyric acid under conditions of ammonia stress.
The effect of heat treatment in the light on the subsequent CO2 fixation was studied with isolated spinach chloroplasts to define the role of light during heat stress. The degree of inhibition in CO2 fixation after heat treatment at 35$^{\circ}C$ under full light intensity (600W/$m^2$) was same as that in the dark. However, heat treatment of isolated chloroplasts in the light manifested thylakoidal damage, which did not occur in the dark. Under weak light (10~30 W/$m^2$ ) where no thylakoidal damage occurred, the inhibition was substantially alleviated , showing protective effect of light . The inhibition caused by heat treatment in the dark or light is prevented by the addition of a few combined compounds to the medium prior to treatment. Fructose-1-6- bisphosphate(with aldolase)and ribose-5-phosphate, known to be effective combined with oxaloacetate in preventing inhibition after heat treatment in the dark were equally effective in the light even without oxaloacetate. Addition of sugar phosphate reduced the Mehler reaction, which may occur in fast rae under high light. However, the addition of bicarbnate and catalase that would remove Mehler reaction did not provide any protection, indicating that protective role of sugar phosphate is elsewhere. Furghermore, in whole plants rapid recovery from heat stress was observed in the light. The apparently lesser or equal inhibition in spite of additional thylakoidal damage under heat stres in the light and less requirement for the protection against heat treatment suggest that the inhibitory effect of heat stress is alleviated by light treatment.
Purpose : This study was performed as follows in order to investigate the effect of presynaptic inhibition mechanism using the transcutaneous electrical stimulation (TES) for global synkinesis (GS) on the post-stroke hemiplegic patients. Methods : The subjects consist of 38 post stroke hemiplegic patients; experiments were performed on thirty patients excluding eight. The experiment was performed on sham group, sensory level stimulation group, and motor level stimulation group for 20 minutes a day 5 times a week for 6 weeks total. We compared the differences in GS levels and walking ability. The measurements were carried out pre, immediated, post 10th, and 20th, for a total of four measurements. Results : The GS level using sEMG found significant differences between groups at the post 10th and post 20th in dorsiflexion, and post 20th in plantarflexion (p<0.05, p<0.01). The motor level group indicated more significant differences when the number of electrical stimulations increased. TUG and 10 m walking test indicated a significant difference at immediated, post 10th, and post 20th. The motor level group showed more significant decreasing tendency than the sensory level group. Conclusion: From these results, electrical stimulation using presynaptic inhibition mechanism of transcutaneous electrical stimulation (TES) had positive effects for walking ability on inhibition of muscle tone in lower extremity. The motor level stimulation group experienced a more significant effect than the sensory level stimulation group. Therefore, the transcutaneous electrical stimulation (TES) is considered to be effective on walking ability increasing through inhibition of muscle tone in lower extremity for rehabilitation of post stroke hemiplegic patients.
The aims of this study are to search herbal medicines that have anti-aging, anti-wrinkle, anti-oxidant and whitening effects. This is preliminary study as a finding for excellent and specific natural agents which inhibit the skin aging and whitening formation. In this study, the articles and the documents, which have been published in domestically or internationally, have been searched and analyzed. Articles were gathered by taking advantage of Society of Cosmetic Scientists of Korea's documents, Pub med database, Korean Medical Database and Korean Studies Information Service System. Among the many species of herbal medicines, we selected the herbal medicines showing superoxide scavenging activities, and 1.1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl(DPPH) scavenging effects. The herbal medicines were showed anti-wrinkle effects on Metrixmetallo proteinase (MMP-1) inhibition activity and elastase inhibition activity. Also we found herbal medicines that have highly effect of tyrosinase inhibition, L- DOPA inhibition and melanin synthesis inhibition.
