  • The ASTER TIR (thermal infrared radiometer) sensor has 5 spectral bands over 8 to 12 ${\mu}$m region. Rock type classification using the ASTER TIR nighttime data was performed in the Erta Ale range of the Ethiopian Rift Valley. Erta Ale range is the most important axial volcanic chain of the Afar region. The petrographic diversity of lava erupted in this area is very important, ranging from magnesian transitional basalt to rhyolites. We tried to classify the rock types based on the spectral behavior of each volcanic rock types in thermal infrared range and estimated SiO$_{2}$ content with emission data by the ASTER TIR.

  • The first Marine Observation Satellite(MOS) was launched by National Space Development Agency of Japan on February 19, 1987, and it is equipped with three sensons covering visible, infrared, and microwave region. One of them is Visible and Thermal Infrared Radiometer(VTIR) whose main objective is to detect the Sea Surface Temperature(SST). The objective of this study was to process the MOS data using Cray-2 supercomputer, and to assess the SST in the Yellow Sea. In order to implement this objective, the linear regression model between the ground truth data and the corresponding digital number of VTIR in MOS was used to establish the relationship. After testing the significance of the regression model, the SST map of the whole Yellow Sea was derived based on the model. The digital SST map representing the study area showed certain pattern about the SST of Yellow Sea in March and April. In conclusion, the VTIR data in MOS is also useful in investigating SST which provides the information about the Yellow Sea water current in the spring.

  • This study investigates to detect Sea Surface Temperature (SST) and land cover change after tide embankment construction using Landsat Thematic Mapper (TM) Thermal Infrared (TIR) band data at Shihwa Lake and surrounding area. SST measurement is important for studies of both the structure of the ocean and as the thermal boundary between the ocean and the atmosphere. Since 1970s, the derivation of SST by satellite remote sensing (RS) has been applied to earth surface using Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) and Landsat TM. However, AVHRR has restriction in deriving SST in the area whose shoreline is complicated like western coast in South Korea because of coarse spatial resolution. The TIR band of TM images can be used to detect SST change whose shoreline is complicated and narrow like the study site. Thus, multi-temporal TM images were used for SST change detection in this study.

  • Surface solar radiation over the sea is estimated using the visible and infrared spin scan radiometer (VISSR) data onboard Geostationary Meteorological Satellite(GMS)-5 from January 1997 to December 1997 in clear and cloudy conditions. The hourly insolation is estimated with a spatial resolution of $5km{\times}5km$ grid. The island pyranometer operated by the Japan Meteorological Agency(JMA) is used to validate the estimated insolation. The root mean square error of the hourly estimated insolation is $104W/m^2$ with 0.91 of the correlation coefficient. In the variability of the hourly solar radiation investigated around the Korean Peninsula, the maximum value of solar radiation is found in June at the Yellow Sea and the East Sea, while in August at the South Sea because of low pressure conditions and front in June.

  • The Moderate resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) is a multispectral sensor that has been actively researched in various fields using diverse land and atmospheric products. MODIS was first launched over 20 years ago, and the demand for novel sensors that can produce data comparable to that obtained using MODIS has continuously increased. In this study, land products obtained using the Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) of the Suomi National Polar-orbiting Partnership (Suomi NPP) satellite launched in 2011 were introduced, including land surface temperature and vegetation indices such as the normalized difference vegetation index and enhanced vegetation index. These land products were compared with existing data obtained using MODIS to verify their local applicability in South Korea. Based on spatiotemporal monitoring of an extreme drought period in South Korea and the application of VIIRS land products, our results indicate that VIIRS can effectively replace MODIS multispectral sensors for agricultural drought monitoring.

  • The study was performed to recognize the most preferable spectral chennels for discriminating geological materials using the portable radiometer. The portable radiometer covers the visible and short infrared regions from approximately 0.4 to 2.5 microns which are coincided with Landsat TM, and the rock samples used for the study are pyrophylites, andesites, granite, granodiorite and silicified sedimentary rocks which are collected in Yangsan-Dongrae fault area. The analysis of the rock sample provides a preliminary basis for determining the wavelength regions showing diagnostic spectral features and for discriminating hydrothermal altered rocks from the unaltered rocks. The measurement of spectral of spectral reflectance for the rock samples was carried out in the laboratory which environment condition such as temperature, light sources, and humidity are constant. The analysis of the measured data was based on correlation between the reflectance value of the rock samples, and the follow discriptions are output of the study. 1) Pyrophyllite shows absorption at 0.83 $\mu\textrm{m}$ due to the oxidation of pyrite, and absorption at 2.22 $\mu\textrm{m}$ due to OH. 2) The altered rocks have generally higher reflectance than the unaltered rocks. 3) The ratio mesurement of pyrophyllites shows strong absorption at band 5/6 and band 6/4(in Landsat TM 5/7, 7/4). The ratio 1/5(Landsat TM 1/5) may be useful to discriminate andesite from the granite.

  • The aim of our study is to develop new algorism for sea fog detection by using Geostational Meteorological Satellite-5(GMS-5) and suggest the techniques of its continuous detection. So as to detect daytime sea fog/stratus(00UTC, May 10, 1999), visible accumulated histogram method and surface albedo method are used. The characteristic value during daytime showed A(min) > 20% and DA < 10% when visble accumulated histogram method was applied. And the sea fog region which detected is of similarity in composite image and surface albedo method. In case of nighttime sea fog(18UTC, May 10, 1999), infrared accumulated histogram method and maximum brightness temperature method are used, respectively. Maximum brightness temperature method(T_max method) detected sea fog better than IR accumulated histogram method. In case of T_max method, when infrared value is larger than T_max, fog is detected, where T_max is an unique value, maximum infrared value in each pixel during one month. Then T_max is beneath 700hpa temperature of GDAPS(Global Data Assimilation and Prediction System). Sea fog region which detected by T_max method was similar to the result of National Oceanic and Atmosheric Administration/Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (NOAA/AVHRR) DCD(Dual Channel Difference). But inland visibility and relative humidity didn't always agreed well.

  • Extraction of waterline in tidal flat has been one of the main concerns in the remote sensing of coastal region. This study aimed to define the spectral characteristics of turbid water near the shoreline and to find the appropriate spectrum to delineate the waterline at the inter-tidal flat in the western coast of Korean Peninsula. Spectral reflectance curves were obtained by the field measurements under the diverse condition of water depth and turbidity at the study area in Kyong-gi Bay. Spectroscopy measurements showed that reflectances of the exposed mudflat, shallow turbid water, and normal coastal water were significantly different by wavelength. Shallow water near the waterline showed diverse conditions of turbidity. Spectral reflectance tends to increase as turbidity increases, particularly at the visible and near infrared spectrum. At the middle infrared wavelength, tidal water showed very little reflectance regardless of the turbidity and water depth and was easily disting from the exposed tidal flat. The exact waterline between exposed tidal flat and seawater should be extracted from the image data obtained at the middle infrared wavelength.

  • Remote sensing using multispectral radiometry may be a useful tool to detect drought stress in turf. The objective of this research was to investigate the correlation between drought stress and multispectral reflectance (MSR) from the turf canopy. St. Augustinegrass (Stenotaphrum secundatum[Walt.] Kuntze.) cultivars 'Floratam' and 'Palmetto', 'SeaIsle 1' seashore paspalum Paspalum vaginatum Swartz.), 'Empire' zoysiagrass (Zoysia japonica Steud.), and 'Pensacola' bahiagrass (Paspalum notatumFlugge) were established in lysimeters in the University of Florida Envirotron greenhouse facility in Gainesville. Irrigation was applied at 100%, 80%, 60%, or 40% of evapotranspiration (ET). Weekly evaluations included: a) shoot quality, leaf rolling, leaf firing b) soil moisture, chlorophyll content index; c) photosynthesis and d) multispectral reflectance. All the measurements were correlated with MSR data. Drought stress affected the infrared spectral region more than the visible spectral region. Reflectance sensitivity to water content of leaves was higher in the infrared spectral region than in the visible spectral region. Grasses irrigated at 100% and 80% of ET had no differences in normalized difference vegetation indices (NDVI), leaf area index (LAI), and stress indices. Grasses irrigated at 60% and 40% of ET had differences in NDVI, LAI, and stress indices. All measured wavelengths except 710nm were highly correlated (P < 0.0001) with turf visual quality, leaf firing, leaf rolling, soil moisture, chlorophyll content index, and photosynthesis. MSR could detect drought stress from the turf canopy.

  • In this study, an algorithm to estimate Aerosol Optical Thickness (AOT) over small cities during nighttime has been developed by using the radiance from artificial light sources in small cities measured from Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) sensor's Day/Night Band (DNB) aboard the Suomi-National Polar Partnership (Suomi-NPP) satellite. The algorithm is based on Beer's extinction law with the light sources from the artificial lights over small cities. AOT is retrieved for cloud-free pixels over individual cities, and cloud-screening was conducted by using the measurements from M-bands of VIIRS at infrared wavelengths. The retrieved nighttime AOT is compared with the aerosol products from MODerate resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) aboard Terra and Aqua satellites. As a result, the correlation coefficients over individual cities range from around 0.6 and 0.7 between the retrieved nighttime AOT and MODIS AOT with Root-Mean-Squared Difference (RMSD) ranged from 0.14 to 0.18. In addition, sensitivity tests were conducted for the factors affecting the nighttime AOT to estimate the range of uncertainty in the nighttime AOT retrievals. The results of this study indicate that it is promising to infer AOT using the DNB measaurements over small cities in Korea at night. After further development and refinement in the future, the developed retrieval algorithm is expected to produce nighttime aerosol information which is not operationally available over Korea.
