  • The purpose of this study was to examine dietary frequencies among Korean American adolescents in California, including the correlation of acculturation and parental dietary Consumption. This study was drawn from cross-sectional telephone surveys based on data from a larger study of Korean Americans in California using random sampling of residential phone listings. A total of 494 Korean American adolescents, ages 12 through 17, in California were collected with dietary frequencies and acculturation and one parents' demographic and dietary consumption information. Three-quarters of adolescents were classified as 'more acculturated group' into the U.S. society with a lower preference to Korean foods, frequent snacking, and lower consumptions of rice and kimchi. Other quarter of adolescents was classified as 'less acculturated group'. However, the most frequent food items by both groups were rice and kimchi. Fruit and vegetable consumption was associated between adolescents and parents in both groups, but rice and kimchi were associated only among the more-acculturated group. In conclusion, dietary frequencies of Korean American adolescents were influenced by acculturation and parental dietary consumption. These findings should inform future epidemiological researches as well as efforts to enhance the diet of Koreans and other immigrants.

  • The present study investigated the effects of work satisfaction on quality of life for 119 paramedics, the Korean equivalent of 911 paramedics. Data collection began in July 2017 and lasted for six months. Data was collected from 410 119 paramedics of the J province and the G metropolitan area who consented to study participation. The results showed that the higher the job satisfaction of the participants, the higher the quality of life (r = 0.508, p = 0.008). The factors affecting the quality of life were leisure activity, subjective health, and job satisfaction. For 119 paramedics to improve their quality of life, they need to relieve work stress and fatigue through leisure activities, and recover and maintain their health through sufficient rest. Moreover, returning to work in a healthy state likely leads to increased job satisfaction, and the quality of life will increase accordingly. Therefore, 119 paramedics should be permitted to have plenty of leisure time outside their work hours and should be able to maintain health through periodic health checks.

  • As the number of electric vehicles (EVs) in Jejudo Island increases, the secondary use of EV batteries is becoming increasingly mandatory not only in reducing greenhouse gas emissions but also in promoting resource conservation. For the secondary use of EV batteries, their capacity and performance at the end of automotive service should be evaluated properly. In this study, the battery state information from the on-board diagnostics or OBD2 port was acquired in real time while driving three distinct routes in Jejudo Island, and then the battery operating characteristics were assessed with the driving routes. The route with higher altitude led to higher current output, i.e., higher C-rate, which would reportedly deteriorate state of health (SOH) faster. In addition, the SOH obtained from the battery management system (BMS) of a 2017 Kia Soul EV with a mileage of 55,000 km was 100.2%, which was unexpectedly high. This finding was confirmed by the SOH estimation based on the ratio of the current integral to the change in state of charge. The SOH larger than 100% can be attributed to the rated capacity that was lower than the nominal capacity in EV application. Therefore, considering the driving environment and understanding the SOH estimation process will be beneficial and necessary in evaluating the capacity and performance of retired batteries for post-vehicle applications.

The subjects in this study were pregnant women who used obstetrics and gynecology hospitals or participated in pregnancy/child-rearing programs in the region of P. After a self-administered survey was conducted in July and August 2008, the following findings were given: 1. As for the best case of oral health care, the largest number(77.2%) of the pregnant women investigated brushed all the teeth, gums and tongue when they did toothbrushing. The smallest number of the women(6.8%) spent three minutes or more brushing their teeth. 2. As to dental treatment experience during pregnancy by age, 27.0 percent of the age 26-30 group had ever received dental treatment during pregnancy, which was higher than the rates of the other age groups with the same experience. 3. Regarding the necessity of oral health education geared toward pregnant women, 94.1 percent of the age 26-30 group and 96.3 percent of the group of age 31 and up felt the need for that, which were significantly higher than 72.7 percent of the age 20-25 group who agreed to the necessity of that education. 4. As to connections between oral health status and oral health care, the women who were in good oral health got 6.60 on oral health care. They scored significantly higher than those who were in a moderate state of oral health and who were in bad oral health, as the latter two groups respectively got 5. There was a significant correlation between oral health state and oral health care and between oral health knowledge and oral health care. The better oral health status led to better oral health knowledge, and the better oral health knowledge was followed by better oral health care. 6. As for factors affecting oral health care, oral health knowledge had the largest impact on that, followed by age, oral health status, experience of receiving oral health education for pregnant woman, dental treatment experience during pregnancy, monthly income and stress caused by oral diseases. Given the findings of the study, oral health education should be provided in light of the special physical and mental state of pregnant women. They should be encouraged to receive possible dental treatment during pregnancy if necessary, and they should learn about how to cope with a dental disease in case of develop it.
