  • Among the human senses, olfactory information still does not have a proper data presentation method unlike that regarding vision and auditory information. It makes presenting the sense of smell into multimedia information impossible, which may be an exploratory field in human computer interaction. In this paper, we propose an olfactory information presentation method, which is a way to use smell as multimedia information, and show an application for scent generation and odor display using a web service. The olfactory information can present smell characteristics such as intensity, persistence, hedonic tone, and odor description. The structure of data format based on olfactory information can also be organized according to data types such as integer, float, char, string, and bitmap. Furthermore, it can be used for data transmitting via a web service and for odor display using a scent generator. The scent generator, which can display information of smell, is developed to generate 6 odors using 6 aroma solutions and a diluted solution with 14 micro-valves and a micropump. Throughout the experiment, we confirm that the remote user can grasp information of smell transmitted by messenger service and request odor display to the computer controlled scent generator. It contributes to enlarge existing virtual reality and to be proposed as a standard reference method regarding olfactory information presentation for future multimedia technology.

  • We propose a low cost, high performance, effective overdrive implementation method for liquid crystal display systems. The technique can calculate all overdrive values using higher order approximation algorithm by only three measurements. We find that our technique can be applied regardless of LCD panels. Due to its simplicity, we can also tune motion performance of the LCD systems without measurements.

  • We describe the fabrication of transparent conducting single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) film on flexible substrate following the conventional spin coating method. The fabricated film was post treated with diluted acid solution and its electrical and optical characterizations were performed. The electrical conductivity of SWCNTs film was enhanced and the film was found to be attached strongly with substrate after the post treatment.

  • We developed a method for adhesion of two substrates with stable liquid crystal (LC) structures using patterned microstructure and LC/polymer composite materials. In the device, the LC molecules are isolated in pixels where LCs are surrounded by patterned microstructures, and two substrates are tightly attached each other by the solidified polymer produced by anisotropic phase separation by UV exposure. These devices show very good mechanical stability against external pressure.

  • We proposed a soft-lithographic method for aligning a liquid crystal (LC) in patterned azimuthal orientations. It is demonstrated that a thermoplastic polystyrene layer is patterned from a thermally stable polyimide layer via pressure-assisted capillary force lithography, which provides multidirectional LC alignment condition simply followed by a unidirectional rubbing process.

  • We have developed tight bonding of plastic LCD with new rigid spacer. For tight bonding of two plastic substrates, we designed structures to collect UV or thermal epoxy placed on the top of rigid spacer spontaneously by capillary effect. We confirmed that tight bonded plastic LCD has a good adhesion without induced defects and a high mechanical stability against the various external deformations. This method can be applicable to the fabrication of large plastic LCDs using stamping process.

  • The contrast ratio is one of the most important performance parameters for display devices. The general method of measuring the contrast ratio is to determine the ratio of the full-screen white pattern to the full-screen black pattern, according to the Video Electronics Standards Association standard. Real TV images seldom have these images, however, and the conventional method does not reflect the true performance of the display in actual use. In this paper, a new contrast ratio measurement method that uses image patterns is proposed, to demonstrate that active matrix organic light-emitting diode TVs have a higher contrast than LED (LCD) TVs.

  • In this paper, we propose a floral scent recognition using odor sensors and a odor display using odor distribution system. Proposed odor recognition has method of correlation coefficient between sensors that select optimal sensors in floral scent recognition system of selective multi-sensors. Proposed floral scent recognition system consists of four module such as floral scent acquisition module, optimal sensor decision module, entropy-based floral scent detection module, and floral scent recognition module. Odor distribution system consists of generation module of distribution information, control module of distribution, output module of distribution. We applied to floral scent recognition for performance evaluation of proposed sensors decision method. As a result, application of proposed method with floral scent recognition obtained recognition rate of 95.67% case of using 16 sensors while applied floral scent recognition system of proposed sensor decision method confirmed recognition rate of 96% using only 8 sensors. Also, we applied to odor display of proposed method and obtained 3.18 thorough MOS experimentation.

  • Objective: The present study evaluated information presentation methods applicable to a wearable Braille display in terms of performance and satisfaction measures. Background: A Braille display wearable at a finger can improve accessibility of information for the blind by presenting information in real time. Method: A Braille display with six pins operated by DC servomotors was developed to simulate four information presentation methods(active, stationary, simultaneous, and sequential methods). An evaluation experiment was conducted with 16 participants(8 normal and 8 blind participants) by using three objective measures(reaction time, RT, unit: sec; recognition time, CT, unit: sec; correct response percentage, CP) and two subjective measures(overall satisfaction, OS; perception easiness, PE) with a 7-point scale. Results: The average RTs and CTs of the active and stationary methods were significantly shorter than those of the simultaneous and sequential methods for the blind participants. Also, the average CPs, OSs, and PEs of the active and sequential methods were significantly higher than those of the stationary and simultaneous methods. Conclusion: The active and sequential methods were preferred to the other methods for the blind. Application: The performance characteristics identified in the present study for the four braille display methods can be utilized to develop an effective wearable Braille display system.
