  • Forecasting dam inflow based on high reliability is required for efficient dam operation. In this study, deep learning technique, which is one of the data-driven methods and has been used in many fields of research, was manipulated to predict the dam inflow. The Long Short-Term Memory deep learning with Sequence-to-Sequence model (LSTM-s2s), which provides high performance in predicting time-series data, was applied for forecasting inflow of Soyang River dam. Various statistical metrics or evaluation indicators, including correlation coefficient (CC), Nash-Sutcliffe efficiency coefficient (NSE), percent bias (PBIAS), and error in peak value (PE), were used to evaluate the predictive performance of the model. The result of this study presented that the LSTM-s2s model showed high accuracy in the prediction of dam inflow and also provided good performance for runoff event based runoff prediction. It was found that the deep learning based approach could be used for efficient dam operation for water resource management during wet and dry seasons.

  • A tracer model was applied in the Far East Asia to investigate the dry deposition rates of air pollutants on Korean Peninsula originated from different countries including China and Japan. Wind direction was chosen to predict the maximum deposition rates and SO$_2$ was chosen as a tracer to estimate the source strength. Model simulation shows that inflow, deposition and airborne ratios of China-originated SO$_2$ were 50%, 8% and 30%, respectively, at most. Also it was found that deposition, outbounded and airborne ratios of Korea-originated SO$_2$ were 15~77%, 8~75%, and 3~30%, respectively Model simulation also shows that inflow, deposition and airborne ratios of Kyushu-originated SO$_2$ were, 30~45%, 8~14% and 20~25%, respectively. This study shows that tracer model can be applied on the estimation of air pollutants partitioning in regional scale and that more sophisticated modules and schemes can be developed and applied to better predict the transboundary amounts of air pollutants in this region.

  • Due to climate change the sustainable water resources management of agricultural reservoirs, the largest number of reservoirs in Korea, has become important. However, the DIROM, rainfall-runoff model for calculating agricultural reservoir inflow, has used regression equation developed in the 1980s. This study has optimized the parameters of the DIROM using the genetic algorithm (GA) based on historical inflow data for some agricultural reservoirs that recently begun to observe inflow data. The result showed that the error between the historical inflow and simulated inflow using the optimal parameters was decreased by about 80% compared with the annual inflow with the existing parameters. The correlation coefficient and root mean square error with the historical inflow increased to 0.64 and decreased to 28.2 × 103 ㎥, respectively. As a result, if the DIROM uses the optimal parameters based on the historical inflow of agricultural reservoirs, it will be possible to calculate the long-term reservoir inflow with high accuracy. This study will contribute to future research using the historical inflow of agricultural reservoirs and improvement of the rainfall-runoff model parameters. Furthermore, the reliable long-term inflow data will support for sustainable reservoir management and agricultural water supply.

  • Prediction methods for a rotor averaged inflow in forward flight are investigated in this study. The investigated methods are Drees linear inflow model, Mangler & Squire model and free vortex wake(FVW) method. Predictions have been performed for a four-blade rotor operating at three different advance ratios i.e. 0.15, 0.23 and 0.30, at which experimental data are available. According to results, Drees model has a limitation for the inflow non-uniformity prediction due to an inherent linear characteristics. Mangler & Squire model has a reasonable accuracy except the disk edge region. KARI FVW method has very good accuracy and has better accuracy than the other FVW method especially in inboard region. However, there are some discrepancies in retreating side due to the dynamic stall effect and in near hub region due to the fuselage upwash effect.

  • To design the drainage system of a mine, it is very important to evaluate the groundwater inflow to the mine workings. In this study, continuous steady state flow through rock mass around mine openings developed in Sungok area of Gagok Mine was analyzed. Saturated only model and Saturated/unsaturated model were used as material models of rock mass. Groundwater quantities flowing into Sungok 160 level which is 1216 m long are computed as 1450 $m^3$/day in case of a saturated model and as 1071 $m^3$/day in case of a saturated/unsaturated model. An effect that hydraulic conductivity has on inflow turned out be greater than precipitation and inflow increased linearly with increase of hydraulic conductivity. It was found that change of hydraulic conductivity ratio and orientation have an impact on the variation of inflow and water table.

  • Non-uniform and unsteady inflow into a Horizontal Axis Wind Turbine (HAWT) brings about an asymmetric flow field on the rotor plane and an unsteady aerodynamic load on the blades. In the present paper effects of yawed inflow and wind shear are analyzed by an inviscid aerodynamic model based on the asymptotic acceleration potential method. In the analysis the rotor blades are represented by spanwise and chordwise pressure distribution composed of analytical first-order asymptotic solutions for the Laplace equation. As the actual wind field experienced by a HAWT is turbulent, the effects of the turbulence are also examined using the Veers' model.

  • In order to analyze the water supply capacity in an estuary reservoir, a system composed of daily water balance model and daily inflow model was developed. The agricultural water demands to paddy fields, domestic water demands to residential areas, and industrial water demands to industrial complexes were considered in this daily water balance model. Likewise, the outflow volume through sluice gates and inside the water level at the start of the outflow was initially conditioned to simulate estuary reservoir storage. The DAWAST model (Noh, 1991) was selected to simulate daily estuary reservoir inflow, wherein return flows from agricultural, domestic, and industrial water were included to simulate runoff. Using this system, the water supply capacity in the Geum River estuary reservoir was analyzed.

  • This study aims at the calculation of a variation of flow characteristics of main channel for tributary inflow in river junction. So this study was analyzed the variation of flow depth and velocity in main channel for a change of inflow degree. For this purpose, FLDWAV model are carried out for variations of $30^{\circ}$, $60^{\circ}$ and $90^{\circ}$ tributary inflow at junction. Results show that velocity ratio(V1/V3) increases and flow depth ratio(H1/H3) decreases for discharge ratio(Q1/Q3) of upstream and downstream when degree increases in junction. And FLDWAV model was applied at a real river junctions. Selected area is a junction of Gumho river and Sin stream. Results show that pattern is similar to a virtual channel.

  • We aim to investigate inflow history of matters that fall into the satellite systems around a dwarf galaxy in Lambda-Cold Dark Matter model. Each satellite system has unique properties because all satellite systems have different mass inflow history by environments and/or the events such as cosmic reionization and merging with other halos. To trace mass inflow history of the satellite systems, we perform three different cosmological zoom simulations whose galaxy mass is ${\sim}10^{10}M_{sun}$. Each initial zoom simulation covers a cubic box of $1Mpc/h^3$ with 17 million particles. Particle mass for dark matter (DM) and gas components is $M_{DM}=4.1{\times}10^3M_{sun}$ and $M_{gas}=7.9{\times}10^2M_{sun}$, respectively. Thus, each satellite system is resolved with more than hundreds - thousands of particles. We analyze the influence of the gravitational interaction with host galaxy, baryonic matter inflow by various cooling mechanisms, and merging events with other halos on the mass inflow history of satellite systems.

  • Flow regime-based ANFIS Dam Inflow Prediction (FADIP) model is developed and compared with ANFIS Dam Inflow Prediction (ADIP) model in this study. The selected study area is the Chungju and Soyang multi-purpose dam watersheds in South Korea. The dam inflow, precipitation and monthly weather forecast information are used as input variables of the models. The training and validation periods of the models are 1987~2010 for Chungju and 1984~2010 for Soyang dam watershed. The testing periods for both watersheds are 2011~2016. The results of training and validation indicate that FADIP has better training ability than ADIP for predicting dam inflow in normal and low flow regimes. In the result of testing, ADIP shows low predictability of dam inflow in the low flow regime due to the model tuning on all flow regime together. However, FADIP demonstrates the improved accuracy over the entire period compared to ADIP, especially during the normal and low flow seasons. It is concluded that FADIP is valuable for the prediction of dam inflow in the case of drought years, and useful for water supply management of the multi-purpose dam.
