  • This paper reviews current developments in UG-related SLA·FLL research. It discusses the findings of Hahn (2000), Shin (2000) and Yang (2001) with respect to the following issues: the role of UG parameters in SLA·FLL and the developmental aspects of inflectional categories in Korean EFL learners' interlanguage. It contends that Korean EFL learners' inflectional grammars are constrained by L1 as well as by Universal Grammar.

  • How do aphasics deal with the inflectional marking occurring in agglutinative languages like Korean? Korean speech repetition, comprehension and production were studied in 3 Broca's aphasic speakers of Korean. As experimental materials, 100 easy sentences were chosen in 1st grade Korean elementary school textbooks about reading writing and listening, and two pictures were made from each sentence. This study examines the use of three kinds of inflectional markings--past tense, nominative case, and accusative case. The analysis focuses on whether each inflectional marking was performed well or not in tasks such as repetition, comprehension and production. In addition, morphological errors concerned with each inflectional marking were analyzed in view of markedness. In general, the aphasic subjects showed a clear preservation of the morphological aspects of their native language. So the view of Broca's aphasics as agrammatical could not be strongly supported. It can be suggested that nominative case and accusative case are marked elements in Korean.

  • This paper aims to examine the base inflectional forms of Korean old vernacular letters, and explain why it appears with frequency. In the korean old vernacular letters, the suffix 'ha-' and ending of the 'Base+ha-' adjective derivation are not appear with extraordinary frequency. I called it the base inflectional forms. I consider it in function and morphological constructions and also the syntactic constructions. Whenever Joseon-era people wrote a letter with a time limit, they have need to diminish their exertion to use of the brush. Therefore the base inflectional forms appear with extraordinary frequency in comparison with other papers. In the 'X ha-' word formation of Korean old vernacular letters, 'ha-' is formal morpheme without substantial meaning. So 'X' is left and 'ha-' and ending can be omitted resolutely. The base inflectional forms are occurred to voluntary language performance for a particular intention. but it is not appear in all conditions. In some circumstances, it appear. I checked out the constructions on base inflectional forms. In the 'X ha-' word formation, 'X' is predicative base without fail. and the ending which take part in base inflectional forms has a grammatical function unadulteratedly.

  • Korean linguistics or linguistics In Korea has the viviparous limitation that on the one hand, it was influxed from Europe and Japan and on the other hand, these days the American linguistics takes the initiative in Korea. That's why Korean linguistics cannot be free of the problems of 'dependence/independence', 'central/marginal', etc. It calls for two conditions to study the nature of Korean itself and to establish the independence of Korean linguistics in this situation. The first condition is that we should reveal some peculiarities of Korean in itself. The second condition is that we should reveal universals of Korean by comparing it objectively with other languages which are typologically and genealogically different. 1 think the first is important but the latter is more important. To meet the second condition, we analysed the expansion structure of NP in Korean and French, and suggested a new tree-diagram for describing equivalently the NP structure of the two languages. As for VP structure, we suggested some possibilities of comparing the final endings in Korean with personal pronouns in French, and of comparing the prefinal ending 'si' in Korean with the second plural pronoun 'vous', etc. As a result of the comparison of Korean and French, we came to conclusion that Korean is a inflectional agglutinative language while French is a agglutinative inflectional one. In other words, they are same in 'typus', are different in 'topos'. This may be a surprising/unexpected conclusion. But this, we think, can lead us to much closer approach to the nature of the two languages Korean and French.

  • This paper proposes a machine learning approach for language-independent sentence boundary detection. The proposed method requires no heuristic rules and language-specific features, such as part-of-speech information, a list of abbreviations or proper names. With only the language-independent features, we perform experiments on not only an inflectional language but also an agglutinative language, having fairly different characteristics (in this paper, English and Korean, respectively). In addition, we obtain good performances in both languages. We have also experimented with the methods under a wide range of experimental conditions, especially for the selection of useful features.

  • This paper focuses on the applicability of paradigm to derivational morphology and the pressure of paradigm enforced on derivational phonology and morphology. Through a close examination of well-attested data, we will demonstrate that apparent surface idiosyncrasies in phonology are the results of paradigm leveling, and that paradigmatic forces of analogy are productively operating in English word formation. On the basis of these observations, it can be argued that the notion of paradigm has at least some justification within derivational morphology as well, even if not to the same extent that it has with inflectional morphology and that the paradigm forces are independently needed in any adequate phonological and morphological theory. This can also be extended to provide evidence against the split morphology hypothesis that inflectional and derivational morphology belong to different grammatical modules.

  • The morphological analyzer is expected to tell attested word forms from imaginable yet unattested ones. An account of the inflectional morphology of English verbs is given in the framework of Word-and-Paradigm morphology, developed mainly by Matthews (1972, 1974, 1991) and further by Aronoff (1994) and Zwicky (1985, 1988), which is free of overrecognition. Thirteen inflectional classes are identified according to the patterns each of them exhibits in filling the slots in the paradigm. Peculiarity in orthography is also considered in assigning each verb lexeme to a class. Modules of a C program which gives associated morphosyntactic properties to all and only attested verb forms are written so that details of this framework can be evaluated explicitly. This program is shown to be superior to existing programs in economy and in the generality it achieves.

  • The goal of this paper is to test the findings about English-speaking children's acquisition of inflectional morphemes in the literature using a large-scale database. For this, we obtained a 4.7-million-word corpus from the CHILDES (Child Language Data Exchange System) database, and analyzed 1,630 British and American children's uses of English derivational morphemes up to age 7. We analyzed the type and token frequencies, type per token ratio (TTR), and the lexical diversity (D) for such inflectional morphemes as the present progressive -ing, the past tense -(e)d, the comparative and superlative -er/est with reference to children's nationality and age groups. To sum up our findings, the correlations between the D value and children's age varied from morpheme to morpheme; e.g. we found no correlation for -ing, a marginal correlation for -ed, and a strong correlation for -er/-est. Our findings are consistent with Brown's (1973) classical observation that children learn progressive forms earlier than the past tense marker. In addition, overgeneralization errors were frequently found for -ed, but rarely for -ing, showing a U-shaped developmental pattern at ages 2-3. Finally, American children showed higher D scores than British children, which showed that American children used inflectional morphemes for more word types compared with British children. The present study has its significance in testing the earlier findings in the literature by setting up well-defined methodology for analyzing the entire CHILDES database.
