  • The buckling of two elastic layers bonded to a semi-infinite substrate under a transverse compressive plane strain is investigated. Incremental deformation theory is employed to describe the buckling behavior of both two isotropic layers and the semi-infinite substrate. The problem is converted to an eigenvalue-eigenvector case, from which the critical buckling strain and the wavelength of the buckled shape are obtained. The results are presented on the effects of the layer geometries and material properties on the buckling behavior.

Stability analysis of infinite rock slopes with varying disturbances based on the Hoek-Brown failure criterion

  • Rock disturbance caused by blasting and stress relaxation is commonly observed during excavation. As the distance from the source of disturbance increases, the degree of disturbance decreases, and rock at a large depth does not experience disturbance. However, in stability analyses, a single value of disturbance is often applied to the entire rock mass, which leads to underestimated results. In this study, this modeling mistake is addressed by considering realistically varying rock disturbance. The safety of infinite slopes in a disturbed rock mass with a strength governed by the Hoek-Brown failure criterion is investigated based on the kinematic approach of limit analysis. The maximum disturbance is assigned to the outermost slope face because it is directly exposed to blasting damage and dilation, and the disturbance progressively decays with distance in the rock mass. The safety analysis results indicate that the assumption of uniform disturbance in the entire rock mass leads to underestimation of the rock strength and safety on infinite rock slopes. A critical slip surface appears to be within the disturbed rock layer as well as the interface between the disturbed upper rock and undisturbed lower rock.

  • The influence of unsteady boundary layer magnetohydrodynamic flow with thermal relaxation of perfectly conducting fluid, past a semi-infinite plate, is considered. The governing non linear partial differential equations are solved using the method of successive approximations. This method is used to obtain the solution for the unsteady boundary layer magnetohydrodynamic flow in the special form when the free stream velocity exponentially depends on time. The effects of Alfven velocity $\alpha$ on the velocity is discussed, and illustrated graphically for the problem.

Superconductivity of infinite layer cuprate

  • The infinite layer compound $ACuO_2$, (A-Alkaline earth) consists of infinite stacking of $CuO_2$ planes separated only by alkaline earth ions. This compound attracted much attention because it contains only key ingredient of all cuprate high temperature superconductor; $CuO_2$ plane with controllable carrier concentration without charge reservoir block. High pressure synthesis method has been found to be preferable for this system due to its ability of doping various lanthanide ion into A site with larger superconducting volume fraction. But rigorous study on this rudimentary compound has been hindered by insufficient quality of sample. Especially superconductlng volume fraction was often too small to identify its origin. In this presentation, we report high pressure synthesis of $Sr_{0.9}Ln_{0.1}CuO_2$ (Ln=La, Sm). By controlling the heating temperature precisely during high pressure synthesis we could have superconductors with quite high superconducting volume fraction for this compound. The magnetic properties of the graln aligned samples show very different behavior compared to the cuprate high temperature superconductors. Details will be discussed.

  • A solution which combines ray and aperture integration(AI) techniques is presented for the problem of electromagnetic plane wave scattering by an open-ended, perfectly-conducting, semi-infinite parallel plate waveguide with a thin, uniform layer of lossy or absorbing material on its inner walls, and with a simple planar termination inside. Numerical results are given for the fields outside the waveguide.

Magnetic relaxation measurement of infinite layer superconductor Sr$_{0.9}$La$_{0.1}$CuO$_2$

  • The time dependence of irreversible magnetization of grain aligned infinite layer superconductor Sr$_{0.9}$La$_{0.1}$CuO$_2$ was measured in temperature range of 2 K < T < 30 K for H= 0.5 T, 1.0 T and 1.5 T parallel to c-axis. From this, we calculated normalized flux creep rate S(T) ${\equiv}$ dlnM/dlnt and found that the temperature independent region in S(T) is significantly wide in comparision with other cuprate superconductors. Using the method of Maley et al., we also deduce the current density dependence of pinning potential and glassy exponent ${\mu}$.

  • We have measured the Hall effect in infinite-layer Sr/sub 0.9/La/sub 0.1/$CuO_2$ thin films grown by molecular beam epitaxy. We do not observe $T^{2}$ dependence of the cotangent of Hall angle, which is commonly observed in other cuprate High-Tc superconductors. Therefore, this result cannot be interpreted within two different scattering mechanism based on charge-spin separation theory. The mixed-state Hall effect shows no sign anomaly, implying that tile hydrodynamic contribution of vortex core is negligibly small.

  • In this study, the boundary element analysis in dynamics for the multilayered semi-infinite plane is developed using the fundamental solution for moving loads. Also the indirect method and superposition method are introduced to consider the multilayered systems and moving loads. At each layer the fundamental solution can be obtained by solving the governing equation which is transformed by the Fourier transform. The governing equation can be solved by three conditions; continuity conditions of displacement and stress, the traction free condition at the surface and the radiation condition at the surface and the radiation condition at the infinite distance. To verify the solution and the developed algorithm, the theoretical solution for the homogeneous layer and commercial FEM program is compared with the results of this study.
