AGVS(Automated Guided Vehicle Systems) in material handling have been used widely since late 1970s. Implementation of an AGVS generally requires substantial study to optimize the design and performance of guide-paths. Traditional mathematical approaches have been used with limited success to analyze AGVS. These approaches, however, do not provide a practical tool for guide-path designers. This paper presents a new approach based on rules in designing and assessing AGV guide-paths to improve the design of a closed-loop layout. A framework for the integrated approach is proposed, problem solving procedures are explained, and a case study is reported to demonstrate the framework. Deletion of seldom used guide-paths, and addition of bypasses to solve the congestion problem, are conducted interactively and iteratively through simulation experiments. To visualize the results, a graphic control program is developed and integrated with the AutoMod/AutoGram simulation package.
Due to the newly emerging market for telepresence robots and the research in the area, designers and developers lack guidelines for specifying the physical characteristics of telepresence robots. On the basis of the previous literature, we attempted to make a distinction between two robot height approaches for telepresence robot designs: floor- versus desk-based robot designs. This research investigated the effects of these robot height approaches on consumer acceptance. We predicted that there would be difference between floor-based robots and desk-based robots regarding consumers' evaluation of and intent to purchase social robots. A study using two types of robots was conducted with sixty university students. The results showed that participants perceived desk-based robots as more useful than floor-based robots. In addition, the participants evaluated desk-based robots more positively than floor-based robots. Purchase intention and willingness to pay also showed similar results as evaluation. The implications for the design of telepresence robots in terms of increasing acceptance of robots are discussed in detail.

Affective aspects of design attributes such as color, Pattern, and texture are important to the overall impression and the success of interior products. Among all the interior materials, wallpapers and flooring materials take up largest construction area and they are main components in creating affective impression for customers. This study aims to investigate the relationship between luxuriousness and related affective variables and design elements of wallpapers and flooring materials. The approach consists of 3 steps: (1) selecting related affective features and product design attributes through a literature survey, opinion of expert panel, and focus group interview, (2) conducting evaluation experiments, and (3) developing Kansei models using multivariate statistical analysis and analyzing critical attributes. Evaluation experiment was conducted using a questionnaire made up of 7-point scale and 100-point scale and 30 housewives and 20 interior designers participated in the evaluation experiment. The result of evaluation was analyzed through principal component regression and quantification I analysis. As a result of analyzing the survey data, the relationship between luxuriousness and related affective features and product design attributes was identified, moreover a optimal combination of the design component was identified. Consequently, it is expected that the results of the study would be a basis of the concept of emotion-based design by giving insights about how customers perceive the luxuriousness and suggesting the optimal combination, and providing specific quantitative design guidelines.

This paper proposes a fuzzy rule-based model as a means to build usability models between emotional satisfaction and design variables of consumer products. Based on a subtractive clustering algorithm, this model obtains partially overlapping rules from existing data and builds multiple local models each of which has a form of a linear regression equation. The best subset procedure and cross validation technique are used to select appropriate input variables. The proposed technique was applied to the modeling of luxuriousness, balance, and attractiveness of office chairs. For comparison, regression models were built on the same data in two different ways; one using only potentially important variables selected by the design experts, and the other using all the design variables available. The results showed that the fuzzy rule-based model had a great benefit in terms of the number of variables included in the model. They also turned out to be adequate for predicting the usability of a new product. Better yet, the information on the product classes and their satisfaction levels can be obtained by interpreting the rules. The models, when combined with the information from the regression models, are expected to help the designers gain valuable insights in designing a new product.

The simulators for a plant unit master control (UMC) developed by domestic or overseas researchers have been developed for operator-training purposes. UMC simulators normally constructed at the end of the plant construction, despite the UMC logics, should be simulated to pre-check many signal interfaces within the power generation systems. Because of the differences in construction schedule, it is difficult for logic designers or commissioning engineers to simulate the UMC logic during the design or commissioning stage. In this background, this paper proposes a simulation method that can be used easily by plant logic designers or operators in the MATLAB Simulink programming environment. The core of the UMC is realized with a unique simulation algorithm based on mathematical analysis and functional blocks combination. In addition, an integer-based configuration was proposed to realize the plant target value control for the equipment in the logic. With these simulation methods, functions, e.g., load distribution, high-low limitations, frequency compensation, etc. were simulated. The results showed that the plant UMC logic can be simulated in Simulink without a plant simulator. The various functions proposed in this paper can provide useful information about Simulink-based simulation design for plant logic designers or commissioning engineers during the power plant construction period.

The purpose of this study was to discover who designed the common type and the individual type Goon office buildings in the Japanese colonial period, and to determine how the individual type's space-compositions were compared with the common types. The study used the literature research method. The method used an analysis of the digital images of the Goon office buildings kept in the national archive of Korea, the annotation of the images, the official documents between the Japanese government-general of Korea and To, the employee's registers of the Japanese government-general of Korea, and newspapers or journals from the Japanese colonial period. The designers of the common types were the engineers of the building-construction part in the Japanese government-general of Korea and also those in To. The space-composition of the individual types was similar to and also different from the common types at the same time, and the difference was attributed to the designers' ability and their preferences.
In the process of product design, shaping is the process of making a substantive existence, and ultimately it generates the outcome. The process of shaping is generally led by designer's initiative work, and in this process, various formative elements are used to generate the outcome. In this research, the basic purposes are to figure out the differences of elements which generated by the differences of consumer's and designer's view in the process of shaping of the product, and the characteristics of the affective responses caused by those differences. Also, it will examine how the consumers can directly participate in the process of the shaping of the consumer-participated product, and the feasible guidelines of design in which consumers' needs can be reflected more efficiently to the process of shaping. As a result, consumers and designers have certain degree of difference of view-point about the formative element of the shape. The difference was due to subjective common ideas of design in case of designers, and in case of consumers, it was due to their immature visual understanding. There is another experiment of affective response about the shape of the product. First, I established the sensible image vocabulary based on the shape of the product. And based on the vocabulary, I carried out the same experiments to the consumers and designers.

Universal design is defined as the design process of products and environments usable by all people to the greatest extent possible, without the need for adaptation or specialized design. The benefits of universal design have been promoted primarily through illustrative 'success stories' of public, residential and occupational environments and products. While case examples may be informative, they may unfortunately be limited in terms of generality to other designs or tasks. Therefore, design methods and criteria that can be applied systematically in a range of situations to encourage universal design are needed. In addition, the seven principles of universal design are intended to guide the design process. The principles provide a framework that allows a systematic evaluation of new or existing designs and assists in educating both designers and consumers about the characteristics of more usable products and environments. However, exactly how these principles are incorporated into the design process has beenleft up to the designer. Since the introduction of universal design, designers have become familiar with the principles of universal design, and they have developed many products based on universal design. However, the principles of universal design are qualitative, which means designers cannot quantitatively evaluate their designs. Some have worked to develop more systematic ways to evaluate products and environments by providing design guidelines for each of the principles. However, recommendations have not yet been made regarding how to integrate performance measures of universal design into the product design process before the product is mass produced. Furthermore, there are sets of requirements regarding each user group that has different age and ability. Consequently, there is an urgent need for design methods, based on a better understanding of age and ability related factors, which will lead to a universally designed product or environment. The authors have proposed the PSD (Preference Set-Based Design) method that can generate a ranged set of feasible solutions (i.e., robust and flexible solution set) instead of single point solution that satisfies changing sets of design targets. The objective of this paper is to develop a general method for systematically supporting the universal design process. This paper proposes the applicability of PSD method to universal design. Here, the proposed method is successfully illustrated with a universal design problem.

The simulators for pump operation developed by domestic or overseas research have been developed for dynamic analysis or operator training purposes. However, previous developed simulators focused on the operators so they are unsuitable for logic designers or commissioning engineers who need to change the operation conditions or logics arbitrarily. In addition, the simulator for two or more condensate pumps' operation, which can be used easily by plant designers or operators, has not been developed. Accordingly, this paper suggests a simulation method that can be used easily for plant designers or operators using MATLAB Simulink. This suggestion helps users who can use MATLAB to implement ANSI/ISA S5.2, which is applied mainly for DCS (Distributed Control System). In addition, to implement the logics specified in the CODE, Sub-Systems were created for the block and evaluated to determine if they can be used in the simulator. In the working level stage using the suggested method, all error possibilities that might occur during the three pumps' rotation operation could be verified with the suggested simulator during the design stage or before operation.
This study is a study on theoretical considerations on industrial design data in the era of data economy. This study aims to illuminate the value of industrial design data, interpret the meaning of the transition from design management to the design data era, and highlight the importance of literacy to interpret data for designers. The scope of research approaches the R&D capability dimension of a company to explore the industrial value of design. It limits the scope of research from an industrial point of view rather than the humanistic basis and aesthetic value of design. As a result of the study, it was found that the value of industrial design data is not in ex post evaluation, but in customer-oriented market prediction, and that the design industry data-led strategy is important. The key point is that the industrial design data issues of large companies and SMEs are different, the direction of industrial design data should be to support customer-centered decision making in the product/service development of companies, and the core competency is the amount of data or tools and technologies to handle it. No, it should be in data literals. Lastly, if the use of industrial design data is to be strengthened, management of the public level rather than the personal level of data management should be preceded.
