  • The general efforts of applied research and development can be divided into product development, process development, process design, process equipment design, and operation The fed batch culture as one effort of theprocess development in fermentation industry has been practiced since the early times of human history. One particular industrial application with long history is in the cultivation of the baker's yeast where the glucose effect at relatively high glucose concentration is the general rule.

  • Humanoid and android robots are emerging as a trend shifts from industrial robot to personal robot. So human-robot interaction will increase. Ultimate objective of humanoid and android would be a robot like a human. In this aspect, implementation of robot's facial expression is necessary in making a human-like robot. This paper proposes a dynamic emotion model for a mascot-type robot to display similar facial and more recognizable expressions.

  • This study examines characteristics of people who are experiencing severe hair loss problems. We focus on how these characteristics are related to their psychological problems, hair loss treatments, wig-wearing practices, and life styles. We gathered survey data from people who visited wig shops for their hair loss problems. The study shows that men and women have different characteristics in every aspect we consider.

  • A numerical study using linear finite element analysis is performed to investigate the behavior of basement wall subject to soil and water pressure in this study, parametric studies are peformed to investigate the variation of moment and shear force according to column-to-wall stiffness ratios and aspect ratios. Scaled factors applicable to the design of basement wall are proposed with the illustration of design examples.

  • The study on social robots has been actively conducted in the robot research community. In the area of robot design, however, there are few studies regarding robot motions that are one of the methods for interaction between humans and robots. This is a preliminary study to find preferred human motions that can be applied to social robots. We conducted a two-phased empirical study about preferred human motions. In the first phase, four representative human motions, such as 'greeting', 'I don't know', 'positive answer', and 'giving', were captured through 28 body makers and video recording. 10 young and 6 elderly Singaporeans participated in the motion capture process. In the second phase, the communication efficiency, emotion, and satisfaction of the human motions recorded in the first phase were measured by a questionnaire and 31 young Koreans, 35 young Singaporeans participated to investigate cultural differences. We drew the conclusion that motions used in the same culture are efficient in communication and also give friendliness and satisfaction. In addition, regardless of user's culture, young people's motions and female motions were preferred in terms of communication efficiency, emotional aspect, satisfaction.

  • In a knowledge-based information society, the technology in itself is one of the most valuable information and in common use as assets. Assessment of a technology depends on many factors such as the grade of technology, marketability, and the time of evaluation, which makes it much more difficult to perform than the other tangible properties. Ultimately, it should be extremely important to consider environmental aspect for technology assessment in order to cope voluntarily with the change of uncertain future toward highly reliable evaluation.

  • The Bass model is a cornerstone in diffusion theory which is used for forecasting demand of durables or new services. Three well-known estimation methods for parameters of the Bass model are Ordinary Least Square (OLS), Maximum Likelihood Estimator (MLE), Nonlinear Least Square (NLS). In this paper, a hybrid method incorporating OLS and NLS is presented and it's performance is analyzed and compared with OLS and NLS by using simulation data and empirical data. The results show that NLS has the best performance in terms of accuracy and our hybrid method has the best performance in terms of stability. Specifically, hybrid method has better performance with less data. This result means much in practical aspect because the avaliable data is little when a diffusion model is used for forecasting demand of a new product.

  • Location management is very important issue in wireless communication system to trace mobile users' exact location. In this study, we propose a dynamic location area management scheme which determines the size of dynamic location area considering each user's characteristics. In determining the optimal location area size, we consider the measurement data as well as the historical data, which contains call arrival rate and average speed of each mobile user. In this mixture of data, the weight of historical data is derived by linear searching method which guarantees the minimal cost of location management. We also introduce the regularity index which can be calculated by using the autocorrelation of historical data itself. Statistical validation shows that the regularity index is the same as the weight of measurement data. As a result, the regularity index is utilized to incorporate the historical data into the measurement data. By applying the proposed scheme, the location management cost is shown to decrease. Numerical examples illustrate such an aspect of the proposed scheme.
