This survey was carried out to investigate the seroprevalence of antibodies to Neospora caninum in Korean indigenous cattle that was representative livestock raised in Jeongeup province Jeonbuk Korea. A total of 1,162 sera were tested for N caninum antibodies using ELISA (Herdcheck anti-Neospora. IDEXX Laboratories Inc., Westbrook, Maine USA). $15(1.3\%)$ sera were positive by ELISA. A total of 290 farms were tested. $11(3.8\%)$ farms were positive. Among the seroprevalence of cattle according to the areas, 8 of 44 counties were infected N caninum. Sero-positive 11 farms of N caninum antibodies using ELISA test and 62 of 301 sera $(20.6\%)$ were infected to N caninum. We found that cattle be raised in Jeongeup province was slightly infected to N caninum. It seems to be infected of N caninum an early stage. but the positive rates was variable that it was $6\%\~62\%$. It was supposed to the highest positive rate of 3 farms had some factors to be infected. The factors were supposed to keep dogs yearly, located the base of hills, and almost feed with imported dried grass. Farmers suppose to the cause of abortion was not the neosporosis but also broke out an accident or was infected Brucella spp. The results of Brucella Rose Bengal Test (RBT) were all negative.
The objective of the current study was to determine factors influencing concentrations of protein-related blood metabolites in indigenous Nguni and crossbred cattle in the semi-arid communal rangelands in South Africa. The body condition scores (BCS), packed cell volume (PCV) and serum concentrations of protein-related metabolites were determined seasonally in 100 cattle raised on communal rangelands from August 2007 to May 2008. Nguni cattle had lower (p<0.05) albumin-globulin ratio, albumin, urea and creatinine, and higher (p<0.05) globulin concentrations than the local crossbreds. Local crossbreds had higher (p<0.05) alanine aminotransferase and alkaline phosphatase concentrations and lower (p<0.05) aspartate aminotransferase concentrations in the postrainy season than Nguni cattle. The creatinine concentrations of Nguni and crossbred cattle were lowest in the sour rangeland during the hot-wet season. The albumin concentrations of Nguni and crossbred cattle were higher (p<0.05) whilst PCV, albumin-globulin ratio and creatine kinase concentration were lower (p<0.05) in the sour rangeland than in the sweet rangeland. Total protein, albumin, globulin, aspartate aminotransferase and creatine kinase concentrations of Nguni and crossbred cattle were lower (p<0.05) in the hot-wet and late cool-dry seasons than in other seasons across rangeland types. Urea concentrations in both breeds were highest in the sweet rangeland in the hot-dry season compared to other seasons. It was concluded that Nguni cattle had lower concentrations of protein metabolites than local crossbreds and protein deficiencies were most prominent in the sweet rangeland during the cool-dry seasons.
Although a large number of single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) have been identified from the bovine genome-sequencing project, few of these have been validated at large in Bos indicus breeds. We have genotyped 192 animals, representing 5 cattle populations of Ethiopia, with the Illumina Bovine 8K SNP BeadChip. These include 1 Sanga (Danakil), 3 zebu (Borana, Arsi and Ambo), and 1 zebu ${\times}$ Sanga intermediate (Horro) breeds. The Hanwoo (Bos taurus) was included for comparison purposes. Analysis of 7,045 SNP markers revealed that the mean minor allele frequency (MAF) was 0.23, 0.22, 0.21, 0.21, 0.23, and 0.29 for Ambo, Arsi, Borana, Danakil, Horro, and Hanwoo, respectively. Significant differences of MAF were observed between the indigenous Ethiopian cattle populations and Hanwoo breed (p < 0.001). Across the Ethiopian cattle populations, a common variant MAF (${\geq}0.10$ and ${\leq}0.5$) accounted for an overall estimated 73.79% of the 7,045 SNPs. The Hanwoo displayed a higher proportion of common variant SNPs (90%). Investigation within Ethiopian cattle populations showed that on average, 16.64% of the markers were monomorphic, but in the Hanwoo breed, only 6% of the markers were monomorphic. Across the sampled Ethiopian cattle populations, the mean observed and expected heterozygosities were 0.314 and 0.313, respectively. The level of SNP variation identified in this particular study highlights that these markers can be potentially used for genetic studies in African cattle breeds.
The data on milk yield of 1837 healthy dairy cows of different genetic groups raised in Central Cattle Breeding and Dairy farms, Savar, Dhaka for the period from 1978 to 1992 were analyzed from first to 6th lactation. The mean (SE) milk yields of 100 days, 305 days, total lactation and total life time ($928{\pm}48.6kg$, $2,188{\pm}201.81kg$, $2,661{\pm}385.46kg$ and $11,134{\pm}2,916kg$) respectively, were in pure bred Friesian found to be highest among all genetic groups. The corresponding means in indigenous cows, $334{\pm}12.92kg$, $946{\pm}64.44kg$, $635{\pm}16.31kg$ and $3,934{\pm}402.21kg$ were the lowest. Among the $F_1$, $F_2$ and $F_3$ cross-breds, the $F_1$ half bred Friesian showed the highest performance in milk yield. The half bred Friesian in successive generations yielded low milk. Similar trend was obtained incase of cross-bred with other breeds such as Jersey, Sindhi and Sahiwal. From the over all results, it can be concluded that the performance in respect to milk yield of pure bred Friesian and their $F_1$ half bred with indigenous and Sahiwal were superior over the $F_2$ or $F_3$ cross-breds between Fresian and any other breed irrespective of proportion of blood. The performance in respect to production of indigenous local cow was found to be almost similar with that of Sahiwal breed.

This survey was carried out to investigate the seroprevalence of antibodies to Neospora caninum in Korean indigenous cattle that was raised in central area province Gyeongnam, Korea. A total of 719 sera were tested for N. caninum antibodies using ELISA (Herdcheck anti-Neospora, IDEXX Laboratories Inc., Westbrook, Maine USA). Seroprevalence of individual and farm were 29.8%(214/719) and 53.2%(50/94). Regional seropositive rates of the samples were 61%(47/77), 23.3%(7/30), 13.8%(49/355), 37.6%(77/205), 65.4%(34/52) at Changwon, Jinhae, Gimhae, Miryang, Yangsan, respectively. It showed difference at the age and on the herd size of farms. A herd of cattle above the age of 5 was more infective than under 4 years. And in seroprevalence by herd size farms having under 30 heads was top(35.7%). Seropositive 214 herds of N. caninum antibidies were tested for brucellosis by test tube. Positive rate of double infection was 16.4%(35/214).
Investigations for hematologic and biochemical values and the differential count of WBC for Korean indigenous cattle (KIC)is rarely performed. Therefore, when the index of complete blood counts (CBC) and biochemical analysis of KIC was requested, it had many difficulties to make the results for blood condition since the standard hematologic and biochemical values of KIC are lacking. In the present study, we have investigated the hematologic and biochemical values and the differential count of WBC for blood of total 252 KIC and 17 striped cattle (SC) as a control. As a result, the mean values of RBC and platelet of KIC were significantly decreased by age (P<0.05). The mean values of RBC, HCT, MCV and MCHC between KIC and SC of the same age (2 - 3 years) showed the statistical significance (P<0.05). Also, in the WBC of KIC, the mean values were decreased according to the age from $12.8{\times}10^3/{\mu}l$ under 1 year to $8.5{\times}10^3/{\mu}l$ over 5 years. In the differential count of WBC of KIC, it showed generally the rates of 45% lymphocyte and 35% segmented neutrophil. In the biochemical analysis, the mean values of BUN and globulin were significantly increased according to the age (P<0.05). Additionally, in comparative analysis between pregnant and non-pregnant group of KIC, the mean values of Hg and HCT in pregnant group were significantly decreased (P<0.05). In conclusion, data obtained from this study may be valuable as a standard for interpretation of the results in hematologic and biochemical analysis of KIC.

The expression profiles of inflammatory cytokines viz. interleukins (IL)-6, IL-8, IL-12, granulocyte macrophage-colony stimulating factor, interferon-${\gamma}$ and tumor necrosis factor-${\alpha}$ in response to subclinical mastitis in indigenous cattle breed Kankrej (n = 6), Gir (Bos indicus) (n = 12) and crossbred (Bos taurus${\times}$Bos indicus) (n = 7) were investigated using quantitative real time PCR. Significant correlation (p < 0.05) was observed between total bacterial load and somatic cell count (SCC) in all three breeds of cattle. All the cytokines were observed to be up-regulated compared to cows with healthy quarters, however, level of their expression varied among three breeds of cattle. In Kankrej most cytokines were found to be transcribed to higher levels than in other two breeds; the milk had higher load of bacteria but not so high SCC, implying that Kankrej has a higher inherent resistance against mastitis. The results of present study indicated that mammary glands of crossbred cattle are more sensitive to bacterial infection than indigenous breed of cattle as they elicit immune response at lower bacterial load and result into higher SCC. Research on identification of factors responsible for differentially expressed cytokines profiles and use of cytokines as immunomodulatory tools can pave way for formulating control strategies against bovine mastitis.
The bovine fat necrosis is often seen as an incidental lesion in the adipose tissues of the abdominal cavity. Most of affected animals, however, have been detected at the slaughter house or routine necropsy. The purpose of this study was to examine the occurrence and distribution of abdominal fat necrosis in Korean native cattle, and its pathologic features. Postmortem inspection at an Chonju abattoir during a three-month period in 1997 detected at necrosis lesions in 67(6.6%) of the 1,012 animals received for slaughter. The occurrence was mainly in alimentary tracts and perirenal. Both sexes were affected, but the lesion were predominantly occurred in female. Gross lesions were white or yellowish in color and formed hard lumps irregular in shape ranging from small nodules to large solid masses. On the cut surface, lesions were occasionally seen chalky calcified granules and some of the lesions contained oil-like fluid. The surface of irregular shaped masses constricted kidneys and intestinal loops. Microscopically, the masses were encapsulated by thickened fibrous tissue, which infiltrated deeply and divided them into many irregular lobules. Initial lesions presented mild inflammatory cell and fibrous proliferation. It became fibroplasia in progressive lesions and resembled chronic lesion, eventhough no grossly apparent inflammatory reaction. The hard consistency of masses, due to fibroplasia, can compress the intestines, urinary organs, and reproductive organs.
A model Indigenous Thai beef cattle breeding structure consisting of nucleus, multiplier and commercial units was used to evaluate the effect of changes in heritabilities of and genetic correlations between adaptation traits on genetic gain and profitability. A breeding objective that incorporated adaptation was considered. Two scenarios for improving both the production and the adaptation of animals where also compared in terms of their genetic and economic efficiency. A base scenario was modelled where selection is for production traits and adaptation is assumed to be under the forces of natural selection. The second scenario (+Adaptation) included all the information available for base scenario with the addition of indirect measures of adaptation. These measures included tick count (TICK), faecal egg count (FEC) and rectal temperature (RECT). Therefore, the main difference between these scenarios was seen in the records available for use as selection criteria and hence the level of investments. Additional genetic gain and profitability was generated through incorporating indirect measures of adaptation as criteria measured in the breeding program. Unsurprisingly, the results were sensitive to the changes in heritabilities and genetic correlations between adaptation traits. However, there were more changes in the genetic gain and profitability of the breeding program when the genetic correlations of adaptation and its indirect measures were varied than when the correlations between these measures were. The changes in the magnitudes of the genetic gain and profit per cow stresses the importance of using reliable estimates of these traits in any breeding program.
Bovine leukosis is one of the important diseases in Korea because of economic losses, and this study was conducted to provide basic information for the control of the disease. A total of 2,104 sera were obtained from 491 farms and examined by commercial kit. In the seroprevalence of farms and heads, 71 farms out of 491 were seropositive (14.5%) and 119 heads were positive (5.7%) out of 2,104. In the areal distribution of seropositiveness, Soseong-myeon showed the highest rate (39.5%, 15/38 farms)and Yeongwon-myeon was the lowest (2.6%, 1/38 farms). By age, positive rate in the below of 1 year old cattle was much less than that in the over of 1 year old, namely, the former was 1.9% (3/161 farms) and the latter 20.6% (68/330 farms). According to the farm size, there was no significant difference among the size. However, the highest rate was shown in the farms having 50-99 heads, 23.2% (13/56 farms).
