  • With increase in digitalmedia data, various video indexing and video sequence matching algorithms have been proposed to efficiently manage and utilize digital media. In this paper, we propose a robust video indexing algorithm to detect scene changes for video sequences with abrupt luminance variations and an efficient video sequence matching algorithm for video sequence query. To improve the accuracy and to reduce the computational complexity for video indexing with abrupt luminance variations, the proposed algorithm utilizes edge features as well as color features, which yields a remarkably better performance than conventional algorithms. In the proposed algorithm first we extract the candidate shot boundaries using color histograms and then determine using edge matching and luminance compensation if they are shot boundaries or luminance changes. If the scene contains trivial brighness variations, the edge matching and luminance compensation are performed only for shot boundaries. In experimental results, the proposed method gives remarkably a high performance and efficiency than the conventional methods with the similar computational complexity.

  • The XML is the new standard fir data representation and exchange on the Internet. In this paper, we describe a new approach for evaluating a path-oriented query against XML document. In our approach, we propose the Parallel Match Indexing Fabric to speed up evaluation of path-oriented query using path signature and design the parallel match algorithm to perform a match process between a path signature of input query and path signatures of elements stored in the database. To construct a structure of the parallel match indexing, we first make the binary tie for all path signatures on an XML document and then which trie is transformed to the Parallel Match Indexing Fabric. Also we use the Parallel Match Indexing Fabric and a parallel match algorithm for executing a search operation of a path-oriented query. In our proposed approach, Time complexity of the algorithm is proportional to the logarithm of the number of path signatures in the XML document.

  • With the advances in wireless communication technology and the advent of smartphones, research on location-based services (LBSs) is being actively carried out. In particular, several spatial index methods have been proposed to provide efficient LBSs. However, finding an optimal indexing method that balances query performance and index size remains a challenge in the case of wireless environments that have limited channel bandwidths and device resources (computational power, memory, and battery power). Thus, mechanisms that make existing spatial indexing techniques more efficient and highly applicable in resource-limited environments should be studied. Bitmap-based Spatial Indexing (BSI) has been designed to support LBSs, especially in wireless broadcast environments. However, the access latency in BSI is extremely large because of the large size of the bitmap, and this may lead to increases in the search time. In this paper, we introduce a Selective Bitmap-based Spatial Indexing (SBSI) technique. Then, we propose an Adaptive Bitmap-based Spatial Indexing (ABSI) to improve the tuning time in the proposed SBSI scheme. The ABSI is applied to the distribution of geographical objects in a grid by using the Hilbert curve (HC). With the information in the ABSI, grid cells that have no objects placed, (i.e., 0-bit information in the spatial bitmap index) are not tuned during a search. This leads to an improvement in the tuning time on the client side. We have carried out a performance evaluation and demonstrated that our SBSI and ABSI techniques outperform the existing bitmap-based DSI (B DSI) technique.

  • One of the most important issues of object-oriented geographical database system is to develop an indexing technique which enables more efficient I/O processing within aggregation hierarchy or inheritance hierarchy. Up to present, several indexing schemes have been developed for this purpose. However, they have separately focused on aggregation hierarchy or inheritance hierarchy of object-oriented data model. A recent research is proposing a nested-inherited index which combines these two hierarchies simultaneously. However, this new index has some weak points. It has high storage costs related to its use of auxiliary index. Also, it cannot clearly represent the inheritance relationship among classes within its index structure. To solve these problems, this thesis proposes a pointer-chain index. Using pointer chain directory, this index composes a hierarchy-typed chain to show the hierarchical relationship among classes within inheritance hierarchy. By doing these, it could fetch the OID list of objects to be retrieved more easily than before. In addition, the pointer chain directory structure could accurately recognize target cases and subclasses and deal with "select-all" typed query without collection of schema semantic information. Also, it could avoid the redundant data storing, which usually happens in the process of using auxiliary index. This study evaluates the performance of pointer chain indexing technique by way of simulation method to compare nested-inherited index. According to this simulation, the pointer chain index is proved to be more efficient with regard to storage cost than nested-inherited index. Especially in terms of retrieval operation, it shows efficient performance to that of nested-inherited index.

  • Similarity indexing and searching are well known to be difficult in high-dimensional applications such as multimedia databases. Especially, they become more difficult when multiple features have to be indexed together. In this paper, we propose a novel indexing method called the GB-index that is designed to efficiently handle complex similarity queries as well as relevance feedback in high-dimensional image databases. In order to provide the flexibility in controlling multiple features and query objects, the GB-index treats each dimension independently The efficiency of the GB-index is realized by specialized bitmap indexing that represents all objects in a database as a set of bitmaps. Main contributions of the GB-index are three-fold: (1) It provides a novel way to index high-dimensional data; (2) It efficiently handles complex similarity queries; and (3) Disjunctive queries driven by relevance feedback are efficiently treated. Empirical results demonstrate that the GB-index achieves great speedups over the sequential scan and the VA-file.

  • Homology searching on the primary structure (i.e., amino acid arrangement) of protein sequences is an essential part in predicting the functions and evolutionary histories of proteins. However, proteins distant in an evolutionary history do not conserve amino acid residue arrangements, while preserving their structures. Therefore, homology searching on proteins' secondary structure is quite important in finding out distant homology. In this manuscript, we propose an indexing scheme for efficient approximate searching on the secondary structure of protein sequences which can be easily implemented in RDBMS. Exploiting the concept of clustering and lookahead, the proposed indexing scheme processes three types of secondary structure queries (i.e., exact match, range match, and wildcard match) very quickly. To evaluate the performance of the proposed method, we conducted extensive experiments using a set of actual protein sequences. CSI was proved to be faster than the existing indexing methods up to 6.3 times in exact match, 3.3 times in range match, and 1.5 times in wildcard match, respectively.

  • The telematics device, which is a typical embedded system on the transportation or vehicle, requires the embedded spatial DBMS based on RTOS (Real Time Operating System) for processing the huge spatial data in real time. This spatial DBMS can be developed very easily by SQL3 functions of the ORDBMS such as UDT (user-defined type) and UDF (user-defined function). However, developing index suitable for the embedded spatial DBMS is very difficult. This is due to the fact that there is no built-in SQL3 functions to construct spatial indexes. In this study, we compare and analyze both Generalized Search Tree and Relational Indexing methods which are suggested as common ways of developing User-Defined Indexes nowadays. Two implementations of R-Tree based on each method were done and region query performance test results were evaluated for suggesting a suitable indexing method of an embedded spatial DBMS, especially for telematics devices.

  • Recently, with the increasing interest in facility management based on indoor spatial information, various studies have been attempted to manage facility conversion between BIM and GIS. Visualization of the geometry data for a large-scale is one of the major issues to the maintenance system. Therefore, this study designed the spatial indexing algorithm through an IFC schema-based scenario for the effective visualization of BIM data based on GIS. A part of the algorithm was developed implementing the OcTree structure and this research has a test for the developed output with IFC sample data. Ultimately, we propose the spatial indexing method for the effective visualization of BIM data based on GIS.

  • This study is to develop knowledge base system for query extension to the user oriented information retrieval. This study has survey the theories of the concept-based information retrieval method and statistic based information retrieval method. In the construction method of knowledge base, the common hypothesis is that the emergence of related term is the frequency of simultaneous emergence of a set of documents. Using the subject index file algorithms and the 'and' operator of boolean logic based on this hypothesis, this study builds the knowledge base. In this research experiment, a subject of knowledge base is education. Using the book of the Introduction to Education, two experimental knowledge base systems is constructed by the different indexing method. One system has constructed by controlled language indexing method, and another system has constructed by natural language indexing method. The performance of two knowledge base system is evaluated.

  • This paper presents an approach for improving the use of VP-tree in video indexing and searching. A vantage-point tree or VP-tree is one of the metric space-based indexing methods used in multimedia database searches and data retrieval. Instead of relying on the Euclidean distance as a measure of search space, the proposed approach focuses on the trigonometric inequality for compressing the search range, which thus, improves the search performance. A test result of using 10,000 video files shows that this method reduced the search time by 5-12%, as compared to the existing method that uses the AESA algorithm.
