  • To analyze the diffraction properties of optical signals and the significant impacts of tapered sidewall profile at periodic trapezoidal 2D diffraction gratings, Toeplitz dielectric tensor is first defined and formulated by 2D spatial Fourier expansions associated with trapezoidal profile. The characteristic modes in each layer is then based on eigenvalue problem, and the complete solution is found rigorously in terms of modal transmission-line theory (MTLT) to address the pertinent boundary-value problems. Based on those one, the numerical analysis is performed on how the tapered side profile of grating structures with trapezoidal refractive index distribution affects the design of a sub-wavelength grating reflector. The numerical results reveal that this tapered sidewall profile plays a critical role in determining the reflection bandwidth, the average reflectance, and the band edge.

  • Volume phase diffraction grating is formed in 5${mu}m$ Agfa 8E75 photographic emulsion film using He-Ne laser. It is dependent on the chemical processing rather than materials themselves that high diffraction efficiency can obtained in silver halide emulsions. With potassium dichromate bleach and alcohol drying, overall efficiency of 71% (81% after allowing for reflection at the two surfaces) has been achieved at an exposure of 180${mu}J/cm^2.$ Dichromate cross-linkage and air void by rapid dehydration increase refractive index modulation depth. The grating is swollen, which is newly identified by Scanning Electronic Microscope(SEM) photography, and it causes on-Bragg at larger angle than the recording angle. It is pointed out that controlling the emulsion thickness has an important role as a potential source for high diffraction efficiency.

  • In arrayed waveguide grating (AWG) devices whose waveguides were composed of polymer with negative thermo-optic coefficient as overcladding, and silica with positive thermo-optic coefficient as both core and undercladding, we investigated the temperature dependence of the central wavelength using two-dimensional SFDM. From these results, it was confirmed that the temperature dependence can be nearly eliminated by adjusting the refractive index of the cladding and the thickness of the silica thin film upper-loaded on the core. Based on the numerical calculations, the AWG device with polymer overcladding was fabricated. and its optical characteristics were compared with those of the orginal silica AWG device. The introduction of polymer overcladding decreased the temperature dependence of the central wavelength from 0.0130 nm/$^{\circ}C$ to 0.0028 nm/$^{\circ}C$ without deteriorating the insertion loss and crosstalk characteristics.

  • Optical embedded diffraction gratings with the bulk modification in BK-7 glass plates excited by tightly focused high-intensity femtosecond (130fs) Ti: sapphire laser (peak wavelength = 790nm) were demonstrated. The structural modifications with diameters ranging from 400nm to $4{\mu}m$ were photo-induced after plasma formation occurred upon irradiation with peak intensities of more than $1{\times}1013W/cm^2$. The graded refractive index profile was fabricated to be a symmetric around from the center of the point at which low-density plasma occurred. The maximum refractive index change was estimated to be $1.5{\times}10^{-2}$. The two optical embedded gratings in BK-7 glass plate were demonstrated with refractive index modification induced by the scanning of low-density plasma formation.

  • In this paper, the thermal characteristics of a tunable all-optical fiber Bragg grating(FBG) filter was investigated by numerical analysis. From the results, it is possible to tune a Bragg center wavelength along temperature variation because a Bragg center wavelength is varied linearly according to its operating temperature, however, the reflectivity of a Bragg center wavelength was reduced over a limited high temperature. Accordingly, it is possible to obtain the stability of a tunable all-optical FBG filter within $600^{\circ}C$, but it is difficult to tune a Bragg center wavelength over this temperature.

  • A new method for fabricating long fiber Bragg gratings(FBGs) using uniform phase mask is proposed. The proposed method is characterized by forming a number of subgratings sequentially in series and varying linearly the effective refractive index of each subgrating. The reflectivity of a 200mm long uniform FBG developed fabricated by the method is about 95%. Also, the bandwidth and dispersion slope of a 250mm long linear-chirped FBG developed here are ∼0.5nm and ∼4.965ps/nm respectively.

  • We analyze the self-pulsation(SP) characteristics due to mode beating of two modes emitted in a multi-section complex-coupled (CC) DFB laser composed of two DFB sections and a phase control section between them. SP frequency due to mode beating of the two modes is determined by the difference of grating periods in the two CC DFB regions. As the difference of grating periods in the two CC DFB regions increases, the SP frequency increases from very low frequency to the THz region. In the case of a mode which is not located in the stop band of the other DFB region, the mode propagates into the other DFB region without a high reflection, so that output powers emitted in a multi-section CC DFB laser have high modulation indexes due to the large interaction between the two modes.

  • We proposed and demonstrated a fiber optic sensor for detecting the thermo-optic coefficient of a liquid, based on a cascade of two different FBGs. One of the two FBGs was etched, and its cladding was removed, for evanescent wave coupling with an external liquid. The Bragg wavelength of the non-etched FBG was used as a reference for the temperature of the surrounding liquid. The refractive index (RI) and thermo-optic (T-O) coefficient of a liquid can be detected from the difference between the Bragg wavelengths of the two FBGs, and the variation of the difference in accordance with temperature.

  • We have developed a measurement method of the refractive index profile of an optical fiber by using diffraction phase microscopy. In the microscope system, the reference light was extracted directly from the probe light that passed through the sample by means of pinhole filtering with a diffraction grating. The spatial interference pattern produced by the probe light and the reference light was processed to generate the phase image of the sample fiber. The index profile was obtained by the inverse Abel transform of the phase profile. In order to remove the background phase that originated from the index difference between the cladding and the surrounding medium, the background phase was calculated from the phase data of the cladding to make a core phase profile that can be directly transformed to the index profile of the core without the full phase image that includes the entire cladding part.

  • The relationship between calculated hydrogen molecular concentration in fiber core and measured index change during the grating growth is analyzed. The index change increases by ${\sim}2{\times}10^{-5}$ per 100ppm of $H_2$ concentration in standard telecommunication optical fiber and the defects related photosensitivity generate ${\sim}3.8{\times}10^{17}$ per 100ppm of $H_2$.
