In this study, we proposed an indentation evaluation method for fracture toughness using cohesive finite element simulations. First, we examined the effect of material properties (yield strain, Poisson's ratio, and elastic modulus) on crack size during Vickers indentation and then generated a regression formula that explains the relations among fracture toughness, indentation load, and crack size. We also proposed another indentation formula for fracture toughness evaluation using the contact size a and E/H (H: hardness). Finally, we examined the relation between the crack size and the indenter shapes. Based on this, we can generate from the formula obtained using the Vickers indenter a formula for an indenter of different shapes. Using the proposed method, fracture toughness is directly estimated from indentation data.

A force calibration of a nanoindenter and a 3D morphology observation of indenters were carried out in this study. A microbalance calibrated with standard weights was used for measuring the loads generated by a nanoindenter. The indentation load could be calibrated from the ratio of measured and generated loads and the first contact load also could be detected from the microbalance data. By analyzing atomic force microscopy images of two indenters, curvature radii of apexes were determined by $19.71{\pm}3.03$ and $1043.94{\pm}50.91$ nm, respectively, for the nearly new indenter A and the severly worn indenter B. Corresponding bluntness depths were estimated by 1.22 and 64.56 nm for the both indenters by overlapping their profiles on the perfect pyramidal shape. In addition, nanoindentation curves obtained from a fused silica reference material with the both indenters showed a depth difference corresponding to the bluntness depth difference along the indentation depth axis. By shifting amounts of the bluntness depths along the horizontal axis, whole nanoindentation curves overlapped on themselves and resulted in nanohardness values consistent within 1.11 % without considering the complex indenter area function of each indenter.
Extending the lifetime of a nuclear power plant [(hereafter referred to simply as NPP)] is one of the most important concerns in the global nuclear industry. Cables are one of the long-life items that have not been considered for replacement during the design life of a NPP. To extend the cable life beyond the design life, it is first necessary to prove that the design life is too conservative compared with actual aging. Condition monitoring is useful means of evaluating the aging condition of cable. In order to simulate natural aging in a nuclear power plant. a study on accelerated aging must first be conducted. In this paper, evaluations of mechanical aging degradation for a neoprene cable jacket were performed after accelerated aging under tcontinuous and intermittent heating conditions. Contrary to general expectations, intermittent heating to the neoprene cable jacket showed low aging degradation, 50% break-elongation, and 60% indenter modulus, compared with continuous heating. With a plant maintenance period of 1 month after every 12 or 18 months operation, we can easily deduce that the life time of the cable jacket of neoprene can be extended much longer than extimated through the general EQ test. which adopts continuous accelerated aging for determining cable life. Therefore, a systematic approach that considers the actual environment conditions of the nuclear power plant is required for determining cable life.
In this study, to achieve the optimal conditions for mechanical hyper-fine pattern fabrication process, deformation behaviors of the materials during indentation were studied with numerical method by ABAQUS S/W. Brittle materials (Si, Pyrex glass 7740) were used as specimens, and forming conditions to reduce the elastic recovery and pile-up were proposed. The indenter was modeled a rigid surface. Minimum mesh sizes of specimens are 1-10nm. Comparisons between the experimental data and numerical result demonstrated that the finite element approach is capable of reproducing the loading-unloading behavior of a nanoindentation test.

This paper discusses two different techniques used to measure the mechanical properties of thin films: the bulge test and the nanoindentation test. In the bulge test, a uniform pressure is applied to one side of the film. Measurement of the membrane deflection as a function of the applied pressure allows one to determine the mechanical properties such as Young's modulus, and the residual stress. A nanoindentation test is performed by pushing an indenter tip into the specimen and then withdrawing it, and then recording the indentation force as a function of the indenter position. A modified King's model is used to estimate the mechanical properties of the thin film in order to avoid the effects of the substrate layers. A combination of both the bulge test and the nanoindentation test can determine both Young's modulus and Poisson's ratio simultaneously.

Nickel bumps for ACF(anisotropic conductive film) flip chip application were fabricated by electroless and electro plating and their mechanical properties and impact reliability were examined through the compressive test, bump shear test and drop test. Stress-displacement curves were obtained from the load-displacement data in the compressive test using nano-indenter. Electroplated nickel bumps showed much lower elastic stress limits (70MPa) and elastic moduli ($7.8{\times}10^{-4}MPa/nm$) than electroless plated nickel bumps ($600-800MPa,\;9.7{\times}10^{-3}MPa/nm$). In the bump shear test, the electroless plated nickel bumps were deformed little by the test blade and bounded off from the pad at a low shear load, whereas the electroplated nickel bumps allowed large amount of plastic deformation and higher shear load. Both electroless and electro plated nickel bumps bonded by ACF flip chip method showed high impact reliability in the drop impact test.

Over the past decade, many computational researches have been performed to investigate quantitative relationships between load-displacement and material properties. But piling-up which causes errors to estimate mechanical material properties remains the most significant unresolved issue in nano-indentation test. This study has estimated quantitative aspects of the effects of material properties, especially work hardening exponent, on piling up/sinking in response of various materials. Using FE Analysis, piling up/sinking in response when material is indented by sharp indenter is investigated to evaluate the effects of material properties. From the FE analysis result, quantitative relationships between piling up/sinking in height and material properties is assessed using dimensional analysis which is used to define scaling variables and universal functions. And nano-indentaion test is performed to verify this relation on various materials. From the result of comparison with prediction from dimensional function and experiment, the work hardening exponent was found to have greater influence on the piling up/sinking in height during the nano-indentation than other material properties, such as elastic modulus and yield stress.

The sharp indenters such as Berkovich and conical indenters have a geometrical self-similarity in theory, but different materials have the same load-depth curve in case of single indentation. In this study, we analyze the load-depth curves of conical indenter with angles of indenter via finite element method. From FE analyses of dual-conical indentation test, we investigate the relationships between indentation parameters and load-deflection curves. With numerical regressions of obtained data, we finally propose indentation formulae for material properties evaluation. The proposed approach provides stress-strain curve and the values of elastic modulus, yield strength and strain-hardening exponent with an average error of less than 2%. It is also discussed that the method is valid for any elastically deforming indenters made of tungsten carbide and diamond for instance. The proposed indentation approach provides a substantial enhancement in accuracy compared with the prior methods.
Nickel thin film is one of the most important materials used in micromachined structure. To measure the mechanical properties of electroplated nickel thin film, two techniques are adopted and compared quantitatively with. One is nano-indentation test to measure the elastic modulus. The other is tensile test to measure not only elastic modulus but also yield strength and plastic deformation, ultimate strength. To perform the tensile test, the test apparatus was constructed with linear guided servo motor for actuation, load cell for force measurement and dual microscope for strain measurement.
Literature review on reliability test method for developing high performance optical/thermofluidic components. Since the miniaturization by the conventional mechanical process is limited to milli-structure, i.e. $10^{-3}m$, new technology for fabricating of mechanical components is needed to match cost, reliability, and integrability criteria of micro-structure. Although numbers of various researches on MEMS/MOEMS devices and components, including material characterization, design and optimization, system validation, etc., the lack of standards and specifications make the researches and developments difficult. For that reason, this paper is intended to propose the methods of reliability test for measuring the mechanical property of optical/ thermofluidic components.
