  • Four simulation models of plastic plate heat exchangers are designed and simulated. The flat plate type heat exchanger is designed as the reference model in order to evaluate how much thermal performance increases. The turbulence promoter type heat exchanger is fabricated with cylindrical-type vortex generators and rib-type turbulence promoters. The corrugate type is obtained from the conventional stainless steel compact heat exchangers, which are called the herringbone-type compact heat exchangers. The dimple type heat exchanger has a number of dimples on its surface. In this study, the flow and heat transfer characteristics of the plastic plate heat exchanger are investigated using numerical simulation and compared with experimental results. The flows are assumed as a three-dimensional, incompressible and turbulent model. The standard k-$\varepsilon$ model is used as the turbulent flow modeling, the SIMPLE algorithm is used to treat the coupling between pressure and velocity, and first order upwind scheme is used for discretization of momentum, turbulent and energy. The computational analysis and experimental results both show that the friction coefficient and Nu number is highest in the corrugate type.

  • The numerical simulations of flow and pollutant particle dispersion are described for two-dimensional bell shaped hills with various aspect ratios. The Reynolds-averaged incompressible Navier-Stokes equations with low Reynolds number $\kappa$-$\varepsilon$ turbulent model are used to simulate the flowfield. The gradient diffusion equation is used to solve the pollutant dispersion field. The code was validated by comparison of velocity, turbulent kinetic energy, Reynolds shear stress, speed-up ratio, and ground level concentration with experimental and numerical data. Good agreement has been achieved and it has been found that the pollutant dispersion pattern and ground level concentration have been strongly influenced by the hill shape and aspect ratio, as well as the location and height of the source.

  • A numerical analysis on three dimensional turbulent incompressible flows through linear cascades of turbine rotor blades with high turning angles has been performed by using a generalized k-.epsilon. model which is a high Reynolds number form and derived by RNG(renormalized group) method to account for the variation of the rate of strain. A second order upwind scheme is used to suppress numerical diffusion in approximating the convective terms. Body-fitted coordinates are adopted to represent the complex blade geometry accurately. For the case without tip clearance, velocity vectors and static pressure contours are shown to be in good agreement with previous experimental results. For the case with tip clearance, the effects of the passage vortex and tip clearance flow on the total pressure loss as well as their interactions are discussed.

  • With the development of a living standard, the importance of indoor air conditioning system in all kinds of buildings and vehicles has increased. A lot of researches on energy losses in a duct and various kinds of flow pattern in branches or junctions have been carried out over many years, because the primary object of a duct system used in HVAC is to provide equal flow rate in the interior of each room by minimizing pressure drop. In this study, to get equal flow distribution in each branch, a blockage is applied to the rectangular duct system. The flow analysis for flow distribution of a rectangular duct with two branches was performed by CFD. By using SIMPLE algorithm and finite volume method, flow analysis is performed in the case of 3-D, incompressible, turbulent flow. Also, the standard $k-{\varepsilon}$ model and wall function method were used for analysis of turbulent fluid flow. The distribution diagrams of static pressure, velocity vector, turbulent energy and kinetic energy in accordance with variation of Reynolds number and blockages location in a rectangular duct show that flow distribution at duct outlets is improved by a blockage. In this rectangular duct system, mean velocity and flow rate distribution in two branch outlets are nearly constant regardless of variation of Reynolds number, and a flow pattern of the internal duct has a same tendency as well.

  • In general, an impeller of centrifugal turbomachinery is designed at isolated condition without considering the presence of a volute, but when the impeller is operating with its volute, the performance of impeller can be different. This is largely caused by the interaction between the impeller and volute flow fields. The magnitude of distortion is increased as the operating point is away from the design point and, as a result, the interaction between the impeller and volute is stronger. In the present calculation, the flow through the impeller is simulated using coarse grids. The flow within the impeller and the volute is naturally unsteady, but the flow is assumed to be steady across the interface between the volute and impeller flow fields. Under the assumption of steady three-dimensional incompressible turbulent flow, the time averaged N-S equations involving standard k-$\epsilon$ turbulent model was solved by the F.V.M. The calculation results are compared with the experimental results obtained for an industrial fan by Sakai etc. and the Hood agreement is demonstrated. And the effects of the impeller-volute interaction are studied.

  • Due to the difficulty raised from the coupling of cavitation modeling with turbulent flow, numerical simulation for two phase flow remains one of the challenging issues in the society. This research focuses on the development of numerical code to deal with incompressible two phase flow around 2D hydrofoil by combing the cavitation model suggested by Kunz et al. with $k-{\varepsilon}$ turbulent model. The simulation results are compared to experimental data to verify the validity of the developed code. Also, the comparison of the calculation results is made with LES results to evaluate the capability of $k-{\varepsilon}$ turbulence model. The calculation results show very good agreement with experimental observations even though this code can not grasp the small scaled bubbles in the calculation wheres LES can hold the real physics. This code will be extended to 3D compressible two phase flow for the study on the fluid dynamics in the inducers and impellers.

  • The aerodynamic characteristics of large transport vehicle has become more and more important in recent vehicle design to improve driving performance in high speed cruising and raise the product valve with regard to a comfortable driving condition. Hence, detailed knowledge of the flow field around truck coner vane is essential to improve fuel efficiency and reduce the dirt contamination on vehicle body surface. In this study, three-dimensional flow characteristics around corner vane attached to truck cabin were computed for the steady, incompressible, and high speed viscous flow, adopting the RNG k-$\varepsilon$ turbulence model. In order to investigate the influence of configuration and structure of corner vane, computations were carried out for four cases at a high Reynolds number, Re=4.1$\times$106 (based on the cabin height). The global flow patterns, drag coefficient and the distributions such as velocity magnitude, turbulent kinetic energy around the corner vane, were examined. As a result of this study, we could identify the flow characteristics around corner vane for the variation of corner vane length and width. Also, suggest the improved structure to reduce the dirt contamination in cabin side.

  • The purpose of this study is to develop a method for predicting the aerodynamic performance of the subsonic airfoils in the 2-dimensional, steady and viscous flow. For this study, the airfoil geometry is specified by adopting the longest chord line system and by considering local surface curvature. In case of the inviscid-incompressible flow, the analysis is accomplished by the linearly varying strength vortex panel method and the Karman-Tsien correction law is applied for the inviscid-compressible flow analysis. The Goradia's integral method and the Truckenbrodt integral method are adopted for the boundary layer analysis of the laminar flow and the turbulent flow respectively. Viscous and inviscid solutions are converged by the Lockheed iterative calculating method using the equivalent airfoil geometry. And the analysis of the seperated flow is performed using the Dvorak and Maskew's method as the basic method. The wake effect is also considered and its geometry expressed by the formula of Summey & Smith when no seperation occurs. A computational efficiency is verified by the comparison of the computational results with experimental data and by the shorter execution time.

  • A linear cascade of NACA 65-1810 profiles are investigated for tip leakage flow characteristics. and calculation results are compared with experimental result. STAR-CD commercial code was used to solve the three dimensional incompressible Navier-Stokes equation that was adopted for steady flow and high Reynolds $\kappa$- $\varepsilon$turbulent model. Numerical calculation of a linear cascade is carried out to investigate effect of tip clearance on pitchwise variations of velocity Profiles. and static pressure distributions on the blade surface at spanwise positions. In case of evolution of tip vortex core location. tip vortex geometry and static pressure at the center of the tip vortex core compared with experimental results. Calculation results are agreed well with the experimental data, and validated. The static pressure losses by tip leakage flow at 2% tip clearance were more than those at 1% tip clearance.

  • In this paper, aerodynamic noise of axial flow fans for outdoor unit of air-conditioner was analyzed by both experiment and numerical simulation. The three-dimensional incompressible turbulent flow was predicted by the commercial computational fluid dynamics code SC/Tetra, while the aeroacoustic noise of an axial flow fan was predicted by FlowNoise. Computations and experiments were performed with two types of axial flow fans, in which very different noise source distributions were presented. The results obtained from this study are expected to show the way to reduce the noise of axial flow fans in industrial applications.
