  • In recent years, measurement in a smart-phone environment is attracting attention in various fields due to its easy set-up process, various functions, convenience and expandability. Even in the field of safety evaluation and maintenance of large-scale infra-structures, the appropriate application of these effective and convenient measurement techniques can be of great help. In this paper, an experimental study was conducted to investigate the effectiveness, problems and complementary methods of applying smart-phone accelerometers to the measurement in infra-structure such as bridges. In model bridge subjected to impact and moving loads, the measured accelerations using a smart-phone and a professional accelerometer were directly compared in time domain. And the statistical and frequency characteristics of the measured signal and transfer function were also examined in frequency domain. The results show that the accuracy of measurement using smart-phone sensor is primarily affected by its incomplete sampling performance. In conclusion, smart-phone sensors cannot be considered suitable for precise assessment, where measurements must be accurate over a wide frequency range, but we can say that the technique is still useful and fairly accurate for some purpose over a limited frequency range, such as the low pass frequency range, which is a major concern for civil structures.

  • Experimental investigations were carried out in an atmospheric pressure, optically accessible and laboratory-scale dump combustor operating on methane gas. The objective of this study was to obtain the phase-resolved gas temperatures at different phases of the oscillating pressure cycle during unstable combustion. CARS temperature measurements were made at several spatial locations under lean premixed conditions to get the information on temperature field within the combustor. Also the effect of incomplete fuel-air mixing on phase-resolved temperature fluctuation was investigated. Results including phase-resolved averaged temperature, normalized standard deviation and temperature probability distribution functions (PDFs) were provided in this paper. Temperature PDFs gave an insight on the flame behavior. And strong correlation between phase-resolved temperature profile and pressure cycle was observed. Results of the phase-resolved high temperature gave an additional information on the perturbation of equivalence ratio at flame as well as the effect of mixing quality on NOx emission characteristics.

  • A study of soot deposition and reentrainment was carried out both theoretically and experimentally to understand behavior of soot formed by incomplete combustion in a diesel engine. Theoretically, soot deposition on engine cylinder wall and/or piston head was studied with a stagnation point flow approximation. Soot reentrainment occurred upon exhaust gas blowdown was also studied by assuming a long-normal shear velocity distribution. Experimentally, a LPG$O_2/N_2$ flame impinging on a disk, produced by a concentric tubular burner, was chosen as deposition configuration and a shear flow unit with compressed air was installed for the study of reentrainment. For selected flame configuration, soot deposition measurements were conducted and showed that the dominant deposition mechanism was thermophoresis. Distributions of gas temperature and soot number density were estimated by combining data obtained by a B-type thermocouple with a thermophoretic transport theory. Disk temperature distributions were directly measured using a K-type thermocouple. Soot size and morphology were estimated from a TEM photograph. Ratios of soot deposit to reentrained amount were measured for a wide range of shear flow velocities, which showed that the reentrainment model was reasonable.

  • The purposes of this study were to segment the women's plus-size market by the types of store patronage, profile the segments, and examine the differences in satisfaction with clothing attributes and variety of plus-size apparels according to different segments. The questionnaires included the 7-point likert scales on store patronage, satisfaction, clothing involvement and body cathexis. Five body measurements were recorded by sales people, and the respondents also provided information on their weight, height and garment size in addition to demographic characteristics. Questionnaires were collected from 7 franchise stores in Seoul, Anyang, Daegu, and Cheonan during the months of February, 2011 to April, 2011. 210 questionnaires were distributed and 160 were returned. Excluding incomplete questionnaires, a total of 149 questionnaires were used in the final analysis. The cluster analysis based on store patronage identified four segments- major patrons of specialty stores, multi-channel users, regular store users, and internet shopping mall users. Significant differences were found among the four segments of women's plus-size consumers in terms of clothing involvement, age, occupation, education and clothing expenditures. Internet shopping mall user group were in overall less satisfied with several clothing attributes and variety compared to other groups.

  • An experimental study on double-concentric diffusion flame has been carried out in order to investigate the shape, the flame length, and the other characteristics of the flame. Flow visualization of the flame by the $TiO_2$ particles and also the emission measurements are conducted. The commercial grade LP gases are used as fuel. The inverse diffusion flames are formed at the center when the central air flow rate is about 0.1 L/min. With a larger flow rate of the central air jet than 0.2 L/min the flame turns to be an annular-shaped flame, which is very bright. When the central air flow rate increases over 2.4 L/min, the flame turns to blue and the flame tips are opened because of the lifting of the inner part of the flame. Because of this lifting and the incomplete combustion, the CO emission increases abruptly from 25 ppm to more than 150 ppm. On the contrary, the NOx emission is decreased.

  • Incomplete combustion due to quenching in a narrow confinement has been a major problem for realization of a reliable micro combustion device. In most micro combustors, effects of flows are absent in the quenching because the flow is laminar and no severe stretch is present. In such circumstance, quenching is caused either by heat loss or by removal of active radicals to the wall surface of the confinement. An experimental investigation was carried out to investigate the relative significance of these two causes of quenching of a premixed flame. A premixed jet burner with a rectangular cross section at the exit was built. At the burner exit, the flame stands between two walls with adjustable distance. The gap between the two walls at which quenching occurs was measured at different wall surface conditions. The results were analyzed to estimate the relative significance of heat loss to the wall and the removal of radicals at the surface. The measurements indicated that the quenching distance was independent of the wall surface characteristics such as oxygen vacancy, grain boundary, or impurities at low temperature. At high temperature, however, the surface characteristics strongly affect the quenching distance, implying that radical removal at the wall plays a significant role in the quenching process.

  • A method that effectively precipitates capsular polysaccharide of Haemophilus influenzae type b (polyribosylribitol phosphate, PRP) conjugated to tetanus toxoid (TT), PRP TT in a liquid vaccine has been developed to measure free PRP present in TT-conjugate vaccine. The method involves adding anti-TT antibody and ammonium sulfate to precipitate PRP-TT conjugate and measuring free PRP in tile supernatant. This new method provides a complete precipitation of the total PRP-TT, and provides an accurate and reproducible measurements of free PRP. The accuracy of the assay was confirmed by spiking known amounts of unconjugated PRP to PRP-TT conjugate, and the new method was found to have no effect on free PRP while precipitating PRP-TT. The published acid precipitation method did not produce reproducible results due to incomplete precipitation of PRP-TT, especially when the vaccine is formulated in a salt-buffered solution.

  • This paper presents a damage assessment procedure applied to periodic spring mass systems using an eigenvalue sensitivity-based method. The damage is directly related to the stiffness reduction of the damage element. The natural frequencies of periodic structures with one single disorder are found by adopting the transfer matrix approach, consequently, the first order approximation of the natural frequencies with respect to the disordered stiffness in different elements is used to form the sensitivity matrix. The analysis shows that the sensitivity of natural frequencies to damage in different locations depends only on the mode number and the location of damage. The stiffness changes due to damage can be identified by solving a set of underdetermined equations based on the sensitivity matrix. The issues associated with many possible damage locations in large structural systems are addressed, and a means of improving the computational efficiency of damage detection while maintaining the accuracy for large periodic structures with limited available measured natural frequencies, is also introduced in this paper. The incomplete measurements and the effect of random error in terms of measurement noise in the natural frequencies are considered. Numerical results of a periodic spring-mass system of 20 degrees of freedom illustrate that the proposed method is simple and robust in locating single or multiple damages in a large periodic structure with a high computational efficiency.

  • Most models assume the complete debugging environments by requiring a complete software correction in quantitative evaluation of software reliability. But, in many case, new faults are involved in debugging works, for complete software correction is impossible. In this paper, software growth model is proposed about incomplete debugging environments by considering the possibility of new faults involvements, and software faults occurrence status are also mentioned about NHPP by considering software faults under software operation environments and native faults owing to the randomly involved faults in operation before test. While, effective quantitative measurements are derived in software reliability evaluation, applied results are suggested by using actual data, and fitnesswith existing models are also compared and analyzed.

  • Background and Objectives : The pitch range of the human voice is variable, extending from chest register to falsetto register. Although numerous studies have investigated after laryngeal mechanism description of falsetto tone, systematic and objective studies were lack. The purpose of this study was to systematically analyze and compare modal with falsetto voice. Materials and Methods : Seven adult baritones were selected from a larger population of volunteers at choir. Simultaneous measurements of acoustic, electroglottographic and aerodynamic study were made during /e/ sustained in two vocal registers, lowest modal and highest falsetto. Statistical analysis was performed using Wilkoxson signed rankes test. Results : In the acoustic analysis, shimmer was increased in flasetto voice(p<0.05). In the electroglottographic analysis, closed quotient(CQ), speed quotient(SQ) at the modal voice were higher than at the falsetto voice(p<0.05). In the aerodynamic analysis, and airflow rate(MFR) of falsetto voice was higher than modal voice(p<0.05). Conclusions : In the results of the study indicate that, falsetto register ineffective, inefficient, generally unpleasant because it was produced by incomplete clousure of true vocal cord. We anticipated that further study with large samples can provide an objective criteria for status and classification of singer's modal and falsetto voice.
