  • In this study, both the model test and the numerical analysis were carried out to figure out the physical behaviour of the model pile during the tunnelling. As a result, both the vertical and the horizontal displacements were simultaneously occurred in the model pile which is subjected to the working load during the volume loss. Consequently, the phenomenon of inclination took place in the model pile. The degree of inclination of the model pile depends on volume loss due to tunnel excavation, pile tip's offset from the tunnel centre, and bearing ground conditions in which pile tip is located. Therefore, in the planning stage of urban tunnelling not only the ground behaviour with respect to the pile locations, but also the physical behaviour of pile itself should be carefully analysed to avoid damage of adjacent buildings.

  • The rice lamina inclination test indicated the presence of brassinosteroid-like active substances in immature Vicia faba seeds. Two of these were identified as castasterone and brassinolide by GC/MS and GC/SIM, respectively. Another active principle was identified as methyl 4-chloroindole-3-acetate by GC/MS and HPLC.

  • In order to explore the brassinosteroid-active components in Zea mays seeds, the methanol extract was purified by the sequences of solvent fractionation, silica gel adsorption chromatography, Sephadex LH-20 chromatography, charcoal adsorption chromatography and Bondesil chromatography. The activity of brassinosteroid was monitored by the rice inclination test and its presence could be confirmed in each purification step. The purified active components were separated by silica gel adsorption chromatography. Brassinosteroid substances in separated active fractions were identified as castasterone and teasterone by HPLC. The content of brassinosteroid in Zea mays seeds as converted into brassinolide was 3-8ng/g fresh weight.

  • Objective: The purpose of this study was to investigate characteristics of the defense mechanism of oriental medicine students by using Ewha Defense Mechanism Test(EDMT) preliminarily. Method: We described the characteristics of the defense mechanism of oriental medicine students and compared the scores of EDMT with standard group. We analysed the differences of defense mechanism by sex (male, female) and age($\leq$29 and $\geq$30 yrs old) within oriental medicine students. The score of EDMT were verified by examination of one sample t-test and unpaired t-test. Results and Conclusions: First, there was no Major Defense Mechanism in oriental medicine students. Second, oriental medicine students had more defensive, passive inclination and used Evasion and Show-off more frequently. Third, the differences within oriental medicine students depended on age rather than sex. The younger students used immature and neurotic defense mechanisms more frequently, and the older students had more defensive and passive inclination.

  • Background: To test the hypothesis that in profile smiling view, for ideal aesthetics, a tangent to the labial face of the maxillary central incisor crowns should be approximately parallel to the true vertical line and thereby perpendicular to the true horizontal line. Methods: An idealized female image was created with computer software and manipulated using the same software to construct an "ideal" female profile image with proportions, and linear and angular soft tissue measurements, based on currently accepted criteria for idealized Caucasian profiles. The maxillary incisor labial face tangent was altered in 5° increments from 70 to 120°, creating a range of images, shown in random order to 70 observers (56 lay people and 14 clinicians), who ranked the images from the most to the least attractive. The main outcome was the preference ranks of image attractiveness given by the observers. Results: The most attractive inclination of a tangent to the labial face of the maxillary incisor crowns in profile view in relation to the true horizontal line was 85°, i.e. 5° retroclined from a perpendicular 90° inclination. The most attractive range appears to be between 80 and 90°. Excessive proclination appeared to be less desirable than retroclination. Beyond 105° most observers recommend treatment. Conclusion: In natural head position, the ideal inclination of the maxillary incisor crown labial face tangent in profile view will be approximately parallel to the true vertical line and thereby approximately perpendicular to the true horizontal line.

  • In this study, based on the relationship of the vertical force - settlement of batter piles obtained by pressure chamber model tests, the vertical bearing capacity of vertical and batter piles according to the increase of pile inclination was analyzed. A model open - ended steel pipe pile with the inclination of 5$^\circ$, 10$^\circ$ and 15$^\circ$ was driven into saturated fine sand with relative density of 50 %, and the static compression load tests were performed under each confining pressure of 35, 70 and 120 kPa in pressure chamber. The vertical bearing capacity of pile obtained from pressure chamber tests increased with the pile inclination. In the case of the inclination of 5$^\circ$, 10$^\circ$, 15$^\circ$, increasing ratios of pile bearing capacity were 111, 121, 127 ~ 140 % of vertical bearing capacity respectively. In the case of the inclination of above 20$^\circ$, the model tests could not be performed because of pile of pile head during compressive loading on the pile head.

  • The exact solution of strength of reinforced concrete RC columns subjected to axial compression combined with biaxial bending needs trial and adjustment procedure to find the depth and inclination of the neutral axis. Thus, approximate methods of analysis and design for biaxial bending are used in practice. Load contour interprets the relation of biaxial bending and equivalent uniaxial bending by u factor which is related to material properties and column shapes. The purpose of this study is to investigate the behavior of high strength RC columns subjected to the combined axial compression and biaxial bending. Fifteen test specimens with dimensions of 200mm$\times$200mm and 4-Dl3 longitudinal steel were examined. The variable of the test is compressive strength of concrete (350, 585, 650kgf/$cm^{2}$), compression load ratio (0.2$P_{o}}$, 0.35$P_{o}}$, 0.5$P_{o}}$), and inclination of loading ($\theta$=0, 22.5, $45^{\circ}$). Test results of coefficient $\alpha$ depending on the compressive strength of concrete are compared with ACI code.
