This study tried to reveal distribution of incision rate and the factors from fluvial terrace deposits on the western and eastern slopes in the Middle Sobaek Mountain Range, using OSL age dating and topographical analysis. An average incision rate of 0.220 m/ka was estimated in the western slope streams, while the streams on the eastern slope showed a lower average incision rate of 0.121 m/ka. These results seem to indicate that the study area experienced an asymmetric uplift. Patterns of incision rate in the study area were different from those in the Northern Sobaek Mountain Range, probably suggesting that the Sobaek Mountain Range experienced spatially different uplift patterns. Among the factors, which were considered to influence on distribution of incision rate in the study area (e.g., altitude of sampling point, distance from divide, distance from axis, channel width, and bedrock type), distance from axis showed the strongest relationship with incision rate. Therefore, uplift is thought to be the most significant factor in distribution of incision rate in the Middle Sobaek Mountain Range.
This study tried to reveal incision rate and its change by formation of lava plateau in the Cheorwon-Jeongok area. Incision rates of 0.421 m/ka and 0.101 m/ka in the upper and lower reaches of Hantan-gang, respectively, were calculated from sites before formation of lava plateau. These incision rates indicate that the upper and lower reaches of Hantan-gang have much higher and slightly lower incision rates than streams with similar distances from the Taebaek Mountains. However, sites after formation of lava plateau mostly showed incision rates ranging from 0.5 m/ka to 0.9 m/ka. Streams flowed on the lava plateau revealed 2-3 times higher incision rates than unrelated-streams or paleo-streams to formation of lava plateau did. These results suggest that incision rate in the study area was greatly influenced by formation of lava plateau and resultant geomorphic avulsion with rearrangements of stream.
This study tries to analyze topographic distribution and characteristics of as well as formative age and incision rate of fluvial terraces in Danyang River on western side and Geum River on eastern side of the northern Sobaek Mountains and to estimate geomorphic development during the late Quaternary in the mountains regarded as one of the uplift axes in the Korean Peninsula. OSL age dating shows that the fluvial terrace I with an altitude above riverbed of approximately 7~13 m in Danyang River has a formative age of approximately 18 ka (MIS 2) and incision rate in the river is approximately 0.156~0.194 m/ka based on the age. Altitudes above riverbed of the fluvial terrace I in Geum River range from approximately 7 to 14 m and the terrace is thought to be older than 70 ka based on age result from aeolian sediments above the terrace deposits, suggestive of an incision rate less than approximately 0.10 m/ka. These results indicate lower uplift rate in the northern Sobaek Mountains than in the Taebaek Mountains. Moreover, it can be suggested that the northern Sobaek Mountains has experienced asymmetric uplift during the late Quaternary, because the river on western side of the northern Sobaek Mountains shows greater uplift rate than the eastern side river does. Low incision rate in Geum River can be attributed to low altitude of the river basin with little difference in altitude from the base level as well as to gentle river slope due to influence of Nakdong River.
This study tries to identify distributional characteristics of stream incision rates at 23 points in the northern part of the Taebaek Mountains. Soyang-gang, Naerin-cheon, Odae-cheon, Dong-gang and upper reaches of Okdong-cheon Rivers closed to the Range show higher incision rates and the rates clearly decrease with distance from the Range. Therefore, the incision process in the northern part of the Range has been greatly influenced by uplift around the Range, and the Sobaek Mountain Range seem to play a role in the incision process. Limestone areas show lower incision rates due to degradation of terrace surface by dissolution. This study suggests that local hydrological, geological and geomorphological conditions can be regarded as an important factor in stream incision rates, although stream incision rates are greatly influenced by regional uplift.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to compare and analyse the clinical outcomes of minimal incision repair and open repair in ruptured Achilles tendon. Materials and Methods: We retrospectively analyzed the outcomes of 10 patients with minimal incision repair (group 1) and 19 patients with open repair (group 2) from February 2007 to June 2011. The postoperative clinical evaluations were done by Arner-Lindholm scale, AOFAS score, overall patient's satisfaction and cosmetic satisfaction of scar. Results: There was no statistical difference between two groups in Arner-Lindholm scale, AOFAS score, overall patient's satisfaction (p=1.21, 0.87, 1.07). There was statistically high rate of cosmetic satisfaction in group 1(p<0.001). There were no complications in group 1. Complications occurred in three patients (deep infection, rerupture, deep vein thrombosis) of group 2. Conclusion: Treatment of minimal incision repair in Achilles's tendon ruptures showed high rate of cosmetic satisfaction and low rate of complication's, but there were no significant differences with open repair in other clinical outcomes. The minimal incision repair could be recommended as one of the effective treatment for the Achilles's tendon ruptures.

Purpose: Few studies have explored the treatment of isolated communicating hydroceles via scrotal incision. We prospectively evaluated the surgical outcomes of such treatment in boys with hydroceles compared with that using traditional, inguinal incision hydrocelectomy. Materials and Methods: Of 347 boys aged 0-12 years who were diagnosed as hydrocele on ultrasonography, 173 boys were assigned to the scrotal incision hydrocelectomy group (group I, n=173) and 172 boys were assigned to the traditional inguinal incision hydrocelectomy group (group II, n=172), and finally 156 boys in group I and 156 boys in group II were included in this study. Surgical outcomes, including postoperative complications and hydrocele relapse rates, were compared between groups. Results: The overall success rates were similar in both groups (group I, 96.8%; group II, 89.1%; p=0.740). The operation time and hospital stay were significantly shorter in group I ($30.94{\pm}3.95minutes$ and $3.94{\pm}0.30days$) than in group II ($38.02{\pm}7.12minutes$ and $4.24{\pm}0.99days$; p<0.001 and p=0.009, respectively). The postoperative complication rate was lower in group I than in group II (3.2% vs. 10.9%, p=0.740). Conclusions: Scrotal incision hydrocelectomy in boys was associated with shorter operative time and hospital stay, and a lower postoperative complication rate, than was the inguinal incision approach. The scrotal incision technique might be an easy and effective alternative treatment when used to treat hydroceles in boys as well as inguinal incision approach.
This study tried to reveal incision rate distribution of streams on the northern part of the Sobaek Mountain Range with OSL age dating and geomorphic analysis, and factors influencing on the distribution were also discussed. With results from the previous studies, a total of 10 sites from 7 streams in the study area showed the rates ranging from 0.220 m/ka to 0.297 m/ka. Namhan-gang and Geum-cheon indicated the highest and lowest rates, respectively. Both sides in the northern section in the study area showed similar rates, while the western side in the middle section and the eastern side in the southern section showed higher rates than the other sides. Higher rates were also found from the eastern and northern sides where the Range runs N-S and E-W directions, respectively. Certain relationships with altitude and distance from the divide can be recognized from the rates and may be attributed to active incision with altitude and location of the uplift axis near the present divide. The rates on granite and sedimentary rock were higher than those on metamorphic rock, indicating that bedrock type is one of the important factors influencing on stream incision. Tectonic movement seemed to play some roles in the rates, because areas with lineaments showed lower rates. This study suggests that incision rate distribution of streams on the northern part of the Sobaek Mountain Range reflects various local geomorphic and geologic conditions.
This study analyzes the spatial distribution of the highest level terrace which can be regarded as an initial land surface before the uplift of the Taebaek Mountains and estimates spatial characteristics of the incision and uplift rates around the Mountains. The altitude above the riverbed of the 54 highest level terraces seems to be greatly influenced by the incision of large stream and their elevation shows a high correlation with the uplift of the Mountains. The elevation of the terraces in the north and middle parts decreases westward with a rate of 5~6 m/km and meets with the sea level at area 100~120 km apart from the Mountains. Therefore, it can be suggested that the west coast of Korea might have generally experienced subsidence during the Quaternary. The elevation of the terraces suggests that area with a direction of N-S or NNW-SSE from Yeoryang-myeon, Jeongseon-gun to Taebaek-si shows the highest uplift rate around the Mountains and area with a direction of N-S connecting Girin-myeon, Inje-gun and Pyeongchang-eup, Pyeongchang-gun also indicates a high uplift rate.
Objective : Traumatic intracranial hematomas have been rarely evacuated by endoscopic surgery. The frontal lobe is the usual location for the traumatic intracerebral hematoma (TICH). Endoscopic evacuation for the frontal TICHs via an eyebrow incision is to be presented as minimally invasive surgery. Methods : Thirteen patients with frontal TICHs were managed with endoscopic hematoma evacuation via eyebrow incision. After making the incision in the lateral eyebrow, a small frontal craniotomy was made, and the hematoma was evacuated under direct visualization of a rigid endoscope. No catheter was placed. Orbital rim resection, hematoma evacuation rate, surgical complications, and outcome at discharge were analyzed. Results : Men were 11 and the mean age was 54 years old (range, 27-86). Orbitotomy was performed in four patients, and no effect on the hematoma evacuation rate was observed. More than 80% of the hematoma volume was successfully removed in 10 cases. Hematoma configuration was not related to the hematoma evacuation rate. None of the patients underwent revision operation or decompressive craniectomy. Conclusion : Endoscopic evacuation of the TICHs with the supraorbital approach may be a good method to evacuate the hematoma located in the frontal base.
Background: Brennan's rodent paw incision model has been extensively used for understanding mechanisms underlying postoperative pain in humans. However, alterations of physiological parameters like blood pressure and heart rate, or even feeding and drinking patterns after the incision have not been documented as yet. Moreover, though eicosanoids like prostaglandins and leukotrienes contribute to inflammation, tissue levels of these inflammatory mediators have never been studied. This work further investigates the antinociceptive effect of protein C after intra-wound administration. Methods: Separate groups of Sprague-Dawley rats were used for quantitation of cyclooxygenase (COX) activity and leukotriene B4 level by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, as well as estimation of cardiovascular parameters and feeding and drinking behavior after paw incision. In the next part, rats were subjected to incision and $10{\mu}g$ of protein C was locally administered by a micropipette. Both evoked and non-evoked pain parameters were then estimated. Results: COX, particularly COX-2 activity and leukotriene B4 levels increased after incision. Hemodynamic parameters were normal. Feeding and drinking were affected on days 1 and 3, and on day 1, respectively. Protein C attenuated non-evoked pain behavior alone up to day 2. Conclusions: Based upon current observations, Brennan's rodent paw incision model appears to exhibit a prolonged period of nociception similar to that after surgery, with minimal interference of physiological parameters. Protein C, which is likely converted to activated protein C in the wound, attenuated the guarding score, which probably represents pain at rest after surgery in humans.
