  • In this study, the laser sintering of inkjet-printed silver lines was evaluated. Silver-nanoparticle ink and a drop-ondemand (DOD) inkjet printer were used for printing on glass and polyethylene terephthalate (PET) substrates with various thicknesses. To sinter the printed silver nanoparticles, the silver layer printed on the transparent substrates was irradiated by focused CW laser beams that were incident normal to the substrates; the irradiation was carried out for various beam intensities and for various irradiation times. The electrical conductivity of the laser-sintered silver patterns was measured and compared with the conductivity of silver patterns sintered by using an oven. The increase in the temperature caused by laser irradiation was also calculated on the basis of the laser beam intensity, irradiation time, surface reflectivity, and thermophysical property of the substrate in order to estimate the increase in the electrical conductivity caused by laser sintering.

  • In this paper, a new measuring system is :proposed which can measure the fine 6-DOF displacement of rigid bodies. Its measurement principle is based on detection of laser beam reflected from a specially fabricated mirror that looks like a triangular pyramid having an equilateral cross-sectional shape. The mirror has three lateral reflective surfaces inclined 45$^{\circ}$ to its bottom surface. We call this mirror 3-facet mirror. The 3-facet mirror is mounted on the object whose 6-DOF displacement is to be measured. The measurement is operated by a laser-based optical system composed of a 3-facet mirror, a laser source, three position-sensitive detectors(PSD). In the sensor system, three PSDs are located at three corner points of a triangular formation, which is an equilateral triangular formation tying parallel to the reference plane. The sensitive areas of three PSDs are oriented toward the center point of the triangular formation. The object whose 6-DOF displacement is to be measured is situated at the center with the 3-facet mirror on its top surface. A laser beam is emitted from the laser source located at the upright position and vertically incident on the top of the 3-fatcet mirror. Since each reflective facet faces toward each PSD, the laser beam is reflected at the 3-facet mirror and splits into three sub-beams, each of which is reflected from the three facets and finally arrives at three PSDs, respectively. Since each PSD is a 2-dimensional sensor, we can acquire the information on the 6-DOF displacement of the 3-facet mirror. From this principle, we can get 6-DOF displacement of any object simply by mounting the 3-facet mirror on the object. In this paper, we model the relationship between the 6-DOF displacement of the object and the outputs of three PSDs. And, a series of simulations are performed to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method. The simulation results show that the proposed sensing system can be an effective means of obtaining 3-dimensional position and orientation of arbitrary objects.

  • Cutrent technological development toward miniaturization requires smaller components. These components usually generate complex multi-DOF motions other than simple 1-DOF motlon. Therefore it is essential to develop measurement methodology for 6-DOF motions. In this paper, a new 6-DOF measurement system for milli-struchlre is presented. This methodology basically employs the Optical Beam Deflection Method (OBDM) with a diffraction grating. A laser beam is emitted toward the difliaction grating which could be attached on the surface of a milli-structue and the incident ray is dif'||'&'||'acted in several directions. Among these difliacted beams, $0^{th}$ and $\pm$ $1^{th}4" order difkicted rays are detected by 4 Quadrant Photodiodes. From coordinate values fram each detector, we can get information for 6-DOF motions with lineariration method, Required resolutions for milli-struchue measurement are suh-micrometer in translation and arcsec in rotation. Experimental results indicate that proposed system has possibility to satisfy this requirement.

  • Two dimensional photonic crystals (2D PCs) have been fabricated by a double exposure holographic method using a He-Cd laser with a wavelength of 442nm. The arrays of the 2D PCs exhibit variable lattice structures from square to triangle according to a change of rotating angle $({\gamma})$ for double exposure beams. In addition, the period and filling factor of PCs as well as the forms (dot or antidot) could be controlled by experimental conditions. $A l.18-{\mu}m-thick$ resist was spin-coated on Si substrate and the 1st holographic exposure was carried out at incident angle $({\theta})$ of $11^{\circ}$. Then the sample was rotated to ${\gamma}=45^{\circ}{\sim}90^{\circ}$ and the 2nd holographic process was performed at ${\theta}=11^{\circ}$. The variation of diffraction efficiency during the exposure process was observed using a He-Ne laser in real time. The images of 2D PCs prepared were analyzed by SEM and AFM. We believe that the double holographic method is a tool suitable to realize the 2D PCs with a periodic array of large area.

  • We have studied methods of detecting attenuation of solid materials such as silicon wafer and piezoelectric $LiTaO_3$ by means of optical probing techniques. We have performed measurements of surface acoustic waves(SAW) generated from 90 degree wedge type transducer and also from inter-digital transducers(IDT). SAW of 20.0 MHz was generated on a silicon wafer from the 90 degree wedge type transducer and those of 20.8 and 14.5 MHz are generated on a $LiTaO_3$ from the IDT. Then any surface-corrugation resulted from the above SAW was investigated by He-Ne laser beams. We projected laser beams, which were modulated by an optical chopper, on the SAW of the same frequency and then measured the scattered beam by the lock-in amplifier. We modulated and synchronized both SAW and the incident laser beam as well as the phase sensitive detector(PSD) to the same frequency in order to simplify our measurement system. We obtained the attenuation coefficients of SAW to be $0.62{\sim}0.75dB/mm$(from IDT1, 20.8 MHz), and $0.60{\sim}0.72dB/mm$(from IDT2, 14.5 MHz), $0.83{\sim}1.28dB/mm$(from the wedge type), respectively.

  • To investigate influence of the incident beams which have the truncated Gaussian amplitude and of the shapes of bump on read-out signal is an optical disc, and the point spread function on bump, the scalar diffraction theory is used in this paper. We consider the truncated Gaussian amplitudes which are $\sigma$=0, 0.5, 1.5, and 2.5, the height of bump which is given by $n{\Delta}_0={\lambda}/4$, and the phase height of bump which is then given by ${\Phi}_0={\pi}$. We also consider the shapes of the bump which are a rectangular shape, a frustoconical shape, and a conical shape. It is shown that as the truncation of incident beam reduces the radius of central spot on bump decreases, the maximum value of read-out signal increases, and that the size of bump decreases. From these results, we get better read-out signal and the reduced cross-talk in optical disc when the truncation of incident beam reduces. Therefore a laser beam having less truncated Gaussian amplitude may useful for an actual optical disc.

  • We developed a 3-channel fiber laser with a common seed and a phase control system for laser beam combining through a diffractive optical element. Beam combining was performed by adjusting the angles of the beams incident on the diffractive optical elements, and the phase of each beam was controlled to maximize the intensity of the combined laser beam. The power of the 3-channel laser before passing through the diffractive optical elements is about 65 mW. The power of the combined beam varied between 2.9 mW and 48.3 mW depending on the phase change of each channel. Through phase control, the output of the combined beam can be maintained at 42 mW for more than 91.8% of the total time. It is expected that higher combining efficiency can be achieved by improving the transmittance of the diffractive optical elements and the performance of the phase control system.

  • We theoretically investigated the far-field radiation pattern of epi-signal from a polystyrene sphere in coherent anti-Stokes Raman scattering (CARS) microscopy with an objective lens of high numerical aperture. We calculated the field distribution of the incident laser beams under the tight-focusing condition and the far-field radiation pattern through coherent addition of radiation from the nonlinear polarizations (Hertzian dipoles) as the origin of CARS signal generation. The epi-radiation patterns for polystyrene spheres of different diameters are calculated, and the pattern of a sphere is also compared with that of a shell fer a diameter of 1100 nm. We finally show how the radiation pattern of the polystyrene sphere changes as the center of the sphere shifts from the focus of the beam.

  • The energy transfer between two incident beams in a photorefractive Cu-doped(0.04 wt. %) ${(K_{0.5}Na_{0.5})}_{0.2}{(Sr_{0.61}Ba_{0.39})}_{0.9}Nb_2O_6$ crystal is investigated at 632.8 nm laser wavelength. In addition, the coherent two-wave coupling properties of a photoinduced refractive-index grating in the presence of amplitude modulation on the signal beam or reference beam are also experimentally investigated. Some preliminary exprimental results are presented for use as a dynamic photorefracitive combiners and pulse shaping elements in coherent optical communication systems and in optical signal processing.
