  • Initial screening is one of the most important and difficult processes in new product development. Many new product screening models have been developed in management and marketing. However practical applications of these models have been limited in part due to their complexity and inflexibility, and in part due to their excessive data requirements. Thus simple judgment models have been popular in practice. However, these models suffer from inaccuracy and inconsistency originating form human cognitive limitations. In light of the problem swith traditional screening methods, we propose a new approach for screening based on managers' past experience and intuitive judgments-screening by analogy, and develop a computerized case-based system for screening new financial service concepts. Using the system, managers can predict the potential performance of a new product concept based on the performance of past products that are similar to it in terms of product characteristics, firm's resources, and market conditions. Based on this prediction, managers make a screening decision.

  • Life cycle assessment (LCA) usually involves some uncertainty. These uncertainties are generally divided in two categories such lack of data and data inaccuracy in life cycle inventory (LCI). This paper explo.es a methodology on dealing with uncertainty due to lack of data in LCI. In order to treat uncertainty of LCI data, a model for data uncertainty is proposed. The model works with probabilistic curves as inputs and with Monte Carlo Simulation techniques to propagate uncertainty. The probabilistic curves were derived from the results of survey in expert network and Monte Carlo Simulation was performed using the derived probabilistic curves. The results of Monte Carlo Simulation were verified by statistical test. The proposed approach should serve as a guide to improve data quality and deal with uncertainty of LCI data in LCA projects.

  • Automobile door-handle is assembled with three parts that are base, skin and cover. Over-molding processing makes assembly of the base and skin. The skin part that was made by PVC polymer has various thickness. Plastic injection molding simulation of part including significant changed thickness as skin is an inaccuracy comparing with real injection molding. To solve this problem, two commercial flow prediction software that are Moldflow MPI and MAPS 3D were used in this study. Simulations were conducted for three types mesh. Taguchi method was applied for simulation experiments. It will be need to compare with simulation results and real over-molding behavior in the near future.

  • Air Wiping technique is widely used because of easy and efficient coating control in present CGL. Coaring weight is decided by nozzle header pressure, strip line speed and distance between strip and nozzle. Coating defects are results from unbalance of these factors and coating equipment calibration inaccuracy. Therefore, this study is mainly dealing with the cause of coating defects such as edge overcoating and coating deviation. The coptimum working condition is suggested by formulated coating model using collected working data. We developed two demension analysis program for air flow in nozzle and calculated dynamic pressure and air velocity with this program. The productivity and coating guality are improved by applying the result of this reserach.

  • This paper proposes a robust method for mapping of a caterpillar-type mobile robot which inherently has uncertainty in its modeling by compensating for the estimated pose error of the robot. In general, a caterpillar type robot is difficult to model, which results in inaccuracy in Simultaneous Localization And Mapping(SLAM). To enhance the robustness of the SLAM for a caterpillar-type mobile robot, we factorize the SLAM posterior, where we used particle filter to estimate the position of the robot and Extended Kalman Filter(EKF) to map the environment. The simulation results show the effectiveness and robustness of the proposed method for mapping.

  • Shape form focus (SFF) is a technique that reconstructs 3D shape of an object using image focus. Although many SFF methods have been proposed, there are still notable inaccuracy effects due to noise and non-optimization of image characteristics. In this paper, we propose a noise filter technique for noise reduction and genetic algorithm (GA) for focus measure optimization. The proposed method is analyzed with a statistical criteria such as Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) and correlation.

  • The heart rate is the most important vital sign in diagnosing heart status. The simple method to measure the heart rate in the mobile healthcare device is using the PPG signal. In developing the mobile healthcare device using the PPG signal, the most important issue is the inaccuracy of the measured heart rate because the PPG signal is distorted from the user's motions. To improve the problem, this study proposed the new method that is to estimate the heart rate without an additional sensor in real life. The proposed method in this study is using the histogram filter. In order to evaluate the performance of the proposed method, the study compares its results with the moving average method in motion environment. According to the experimental results, the performance of the proposed method was more than 40% better than the performances of the MAF.

  • Process incapability index which is intended to evaluate the process capability by measuring process incapability provides more detailed information by dividing information about the process mean and variance. But when the target value is not consistent with the center of specification, it is very difficult to evaluate the process capability accurately. Thus it is necessary to improve the existing process incapability index. The improved process incapability index can identify the variation of the process faster than other process capability indices when applied firstly, to the precision process which can be affected sensitively by the change of the process, secondly, to the ordinary process where cost difference from the change of process is noticeable. By using subindices such as inaccuracy index and imprecision index, it is easier for quality manager to find where the cause of the variation of process is, and to take necessary action in advance.

  • Gradient-based optimization methods are inefficient in applications which require expensive function evaluations, and useless in applications where objective and/or constraint functions are 'noisy' due to modeling and cumulative numerical inaccuracy since gradient evaluation results cannot be reliable. Moreover, it is difficult to be integrated with commercial analysis software, and they cannot be employed when only experimental analysis results are available. In this research an optimization program based on a response surface method has been developed to overcome the aforementioned difficulties. Various methods for design of experiments and new proposed approximation models are implemented in the program. The effectiveness of the optimization program is tested on several test problems and results are discussed.

  • A technique for a wear volume calculation is improved and verified in this research. The wear profile data measured by a surface roughness tester is used. The present technique uses a data flattening, the FFT and the windowing procedure, which is used for a general signal processing. The measured value of an average roughness of an unworn surfnce is used for the baseline of the integration for the volume calculation. The improvements from the previous technique are the procedures of the data flattening and the determination of a baseline. It is found that the flattening procedure efnciently manipulates the raw data when the levels of it are not horizontal, which enables us to calculate the volume reasonably well and readily. By comparing it with the weight loss method by using artificial dents, the present method reveals more volume by aroung 3~10%. It is attributed to the protruded region of the specimen and the inaccuracy and data averaging during the weght loss measurement. From a thorough investigation, it is concluded that the present technique can provide an accurate wear volume.
