This paper describes a vehicle driving-load estimation method for application to vehicle Intelligent Cruise Control (ICC). Vehicle driving-load consists of aerodynamic force, rolling resistance, and gravitational force due to road slope and is unknown disturbance in a vehicle dynamic model. The vehicle driving-load has been estimated from engine and wheel speed measurements using a vehicle dynamic model a least square method. The estimated driving-load has been used in the adaptation of throttle/brake control law. The performance of the control law has been investigated via both simulation and vehicle tests. The simulation and test results show that the proposed control law can provide satisfactory vehicle-to-vehicle distance control performance for various driving situations.

According to revolutionary developments in automobile technologies, eco-friendly advanced vehicles (hybrid vehicle, hydrogen fuel-cell vehicle, electric vehicle, etc.) are rapidly increasing. The electromagnetic compatibility is getting more important for development of a vehicle because those advanced vehicles are driven by electric energy and equipped with more electric systems. In general, electromagnetic compatibility tests consist of an electromagnetic interference(EMI) test and an electromagnetic susceptibility(EMS) test. EMI test of the electric vehicles are needed not only in driving mode but also in charging mode because they must be recharged by much electric energy for driving. Depending on vehicle manufacturers, the charging device type and the location of charging device inlet in electric vehicles are various. In this paper, in order to investigate EMI of electric vehicles in charging mode in consideration of the direction of measuring antenna and the location of charging device inlet, a series of electromagnetic emission tests are conducted using three electric vehicles (neighborhood electric vehicle, electric vehicle and electric vehicle-bus). The test results show that electromagnetic emission measurements in charging mode are dependent on the direction of measuring antenna and the location of charging device inlet.
The vehicle oriented block box system based on the u-healthcare and the human-free guard functions is developed in this paper. We also suggested the design philosophies, ideas, and analyzed the performance of the suggested system. The developed vehicle oriented black box system has some characteristics such as; 1) detects the dangerous situation by ultrasonic sensor in advance, and stores the situation information of the neighborhood of the vehicle to the imbedded SD memory card if the dangerous situation may be occurred in the parked vehicle; 2) detects the present location and speed information of the vehicle by GPS receiver and 3-axes acceleration sensor, and stores the information to the SD memory card periodically if the vehicle is running; 3) measures the dioxide carbon in the vehicle inside using $CO_2$ sensor, and forces the ventilation motor of the vehicle to operate and maintains the driver's health if the measured level is more than standard health requirements; 4) provides the stored vehicle's operating information to the driver by GUI (Graphical User Interface) based touch LCD monitor.

A vehicle longitudinal control strategy with guaranteed string stability for vehicle stop-and-go(SG) cruise control is presented in this paper. The SG cruise control systems should be designed such that string stability can be guaranteed in addition to that every vehicle in a string of SG cruise control vehicles must track any bounded acceleration and velocity profile of its preceding vehicle with a bounded spacing and velocity error. An optimal vehicle following control law based on the information of the 1311owing distance (clearance) and its velocity relative to the vehicle ahead (relative velocity) has been used and string stability analysis has been done based on the control law and constant time gap spacing policy, A validated multi-vehicle simulation package has been shown that the string stability analysis using the approximate model of the vehicle servo-loop which includes vehicle powertrain and brake control system dynamics is valid in the design of the SG cruise control law with guaranteed string stability.

In this paper, an impedance control using a serial chain of spring-damper system is proposed for a vehicle platoon. For safety of the vehicle platoon, it is required to regulated the distance between each vehicle at a preassigned value even in case of vehicle model error, or moise in the measurement signal. Since the spring-damper system is physically stable and widely used to represent the interaction with the uncertain environments, it is appropriate to the longitudinal control of the vehicle platoon. By considering the nonholonomic characteristics of the vehicle motion, the lateral control and the longitudinal control of the vehicle paltoon are unified in the proposed algorithm. Computer simulation is carried out to verify the robustness against the uncertainties such as the vehicle model error and the measurement noise.
In this study, the analysis of high-speed vehicle-bridge interactions by a simplified 3-dimensional finite element model is performed. Since railroads are constructed mostly as double tracks, there exists eccentricity between the vehicle axle and the neutral axis of cross section of a railway bridge. Therefore, for the more efficient and accurate vehicle-bridge interaction analysis, the analysis model should include the eccentricity of axle loads and the effect of torsional forces acting on the bridge. The investigation into the influences of eccentricity of the vehicle axle loads and vehicle speed on vehicle-bridge interactions are carried out for two cases. In the first case, only one train moves on its track and in the other case, two trains move respectively on their tracks in the opposite direction. From the analysis results of an existing bridge, the efficiency and capability of the simplified 3-dimensional model for practical application can be also verified.

A study to get better vehicle fuel economy is described based on an express bus. The approach is based on using a commercial software vehicle simulation to identify the relative efficiency of each of the vehicle systems, such as the engine hardware, engine software calibration, transmission, cooling system and ancillary drives. The simulation-based approach offers a detailed understanding of which vehicle systems are underperforming and by how much the vehicle fuel economy can be improved if those systems are brought up to best-in-class performance. In this way, the optimum vehicle fuel economy can be provided to the vehicle customer. A further benefit is that the simulation requires only a minimum of vehicle testing for initial validation, with all subsequent field test cycles performed in software, thereby reducing development time and cost for the manufacturer.
Wind-vehicle-bridge (WVB) interaction can be regarded as a coupled vibration system. Aerodynamic forces and moment on vehicles and bridge decks play an important role in the vibration analysis of the coupled WVB system. High-speed vehicle motion has certain effects on the aerodynamic characteristics of a vehicle-bridge system under crosswinds, but it is not taken into account in most previous studies. In this study, a new testing system with a moving vehicle model was developed to directly measure the aerodynamic forces and moment on the vehicle and bridge deck when the vehicle model moved on the bridge deck under crosswinds in a large wind tunnel. The testing system, with a total length of 18.0 m, consisted of three main parts: vehicle-bridge model system, motion system and signal measuring system. The wind speed, vehicle speed, test objects and relative position of the vehicle to the bridge deck could be easily altered for different test cases. The aerodynamic forces and moment on the moving vehicle and bridge deck were measured utilizing the new testing system. The effects of the vehicle speed, wind yaw angle, rail track position and vehicle type on the aerodynamic characteristics of the vehicle and bridge deck were investigated. In addition, a data processing method was proposed according to the characteristics of the dynamic testing signals to determine the variations of aerodynamic forces and moment on the moving vehicle and bridge deck. Three-car and single-car models were employed as the moving rail vehicle model and road vehicle model, respectively. The results indicate that the drag and lift coefficients of the vehicle tend to increase with the increase of the vehicle speed and the decrease of the resultant wind yaw angle and that the vehicle speed has more significant effect on the aerodynamic coefficients of the single-car model than on those of the three-car model. This study also reveals that the aerodynamic coefficients of the vehicle and bridge deck are strongly influenced by the rail track positions, while the aerodynamic coefficients of the bridge deck are insensitive to the vehicle speed or resultant wind yaw angle.

In this paper, a planar model for mechanics of a vehicle/pedestrian collision incorporating road gradient is derived to evaluate the pre-collision speed of vehicle. It takes into account a few physical variables and parameters of popular wrap and forward projection collisions, which include horizontal distance traveled between primary and secondary impacts with the vehicle, launch angle, center-of-gravity height at launch, distance from launch to rest, pedestrian-ground drag factor, the pre-collision vehicle speed and road gradient. The model including road gradient is derived analytically for reconstruction of pedestrian collision accidents, and evaluates the vehicle speed from the pedestrian throw distance. The model coefficients have physical interpretations and are determined through direct calculation. This work shows that the road gradient has a significant effect on the evaluation of the vehicle speed and must be considered in accident cases with inclined road. In additions, foreign/domestic empirical cases and multibody dynamic simulation results are used to construct a least-squares fitted model that has the same structure of the analytical one that provides an estimate of the vehicle speed based on the pedestrian throw distance and the band within which the vehicle speed would be expected to be in 95% of cases.

Current IEEE 802.11p which is suggested for vehicle to vehicle communication supports one hop communication. Thus, it has a limitation to carry out efficient data dissemination. In this thesis, we suggest LTE-D2D based vehicle network to provide efficient data dissemination in the vehicle environment. In this network architecture, we use name based message with IP packet options and we put the intermediate vehicle node called 'super vehicle node' and each normal vehicle node in the cell requests data to the super vehicle node. The super vehicle node responses data to the normal vehicle node. Performance analysis is based mathematical modeling. We compare LTE cellular network to LTE-D2D based vehicle network about throughput according to packet delivery time.
