Evaluation of normal morphology, DNA fragmentation, and hyaluronic acid binding ability of human spermatozoa after using four different commercial media for density gradient centrifugation

  • Objective: Density gradient centrifugation (DGC) is frequently used to isolate high-motility fractions of spermatozoa. We compared the efficacy of four DGC media in terms of the percentage of morphologically normal spermatozoa, DNA fragmentation level, and hyaluronic acid (HA) binding ability. Methods: Thirty men with a total motile spermatozoa count > 80 million participated. Semen samples were divided into four aliquots, which were processed using PureSperm, PureCeption, Sidney, and SpermGrad media, respectively. The DNA fragmentation level was measured using the Halosperm assay kit and HA binding ability was measured using the HBA assay kit. Results: The mean percentage of morphologically normal spermatozoa was significantly enhanced after DGC using all four media (10.3%, 9.9%, 9.8%, and 10.7%, respectively; p< 0.05 for each when compared with 6.9% in raw semen). The DNA fragmentation level was significantly reduced after DGC using PureSperm, PureCeption, and SpermGrad media (6.0%, 6.5%, and 4.9%, respectively; p< 0.05 for each when compared with 11.2% in raw semen), but not after DGC using Sidney media (8.5%, p> 0.05). HA binding ability did not change after DGC using any of the four media. Conclusion: The four media were equally effective for obtaining a sperm fraction with highly motile, morphologically normal sperm. PureSperm, PureCeption, and SpermGrad media were equally effective for acquiring a sperm fraction with less DNA fragmentation.

An X-ray Image Panorama System Using Robust Feature Matching and Per ception-Based Image Enhancement

  • This paper presents an x-ray medical image panorama system which can overcome the smallness of the images that exist on a source computer during remote medical processing. In the system, after the standard medical image format DICOM is converted to the PC standard image format, a MSR algorithm is used to enhance X-ray images of low quality. Then SURF and Multi-band blending are applied to generate a panoramic image. Also, this paper evaluates the proposed SURF based system through the average gray value error and image quality criterion with X-ray image data by comparing with a SIFT based system. The results show that the proposed system is superior to SIFT based system in image quality.

  • Rice is an important food crop for most of the population in the world and it is largely cultivated in Pakistan. It not only fulfills food demand in the country but also contributes to the wealth of Pakistan. But its production can be affected by climate change. The irregularities in the climate can cause several diseases such as brown spots, bacterial blight, tungro and leaf blasts, etc. Detection of these diseases is necessary for suitable treatment. These diseases can be effectively detected using deep learning such as Convolution Neural networks. Due to the small dataset, transfer learning models such as vgg16 model can effectively detect the diseases. In this paper, vgg16, inception and xception models are used. Vgg16, inception and xception models have achieved 99.22%, 88.48% and 93.92% validation accuracies when the epoch value is set to 10. Evaluation of models has also been done using accuracy, recall, precision, and confusion matrix.

일과성 소장형 장중첩증의 임상적 고찰 (A Clinical Observation on Children with Transient Small Bowel Intussusception)

  • 목 적: 소장에서 발생한 자연 정복된 일과성 장중첩증의 임상 양상과 복부 초음파 검사소견을 규명하기 위하여 본 조사를 시행하였다. 방 법: 1999년 3월부터 2000년 2월까지 12개월 동안 장중첩증으로 울산동강병원 소아과에 입원한 98례를 대상으로 후향적으로 조사하여 일과성 소장형 장중첩증과 전형적인 장중첩증의 임상 양상 및 복부초음파 소견을 비교하였다. 결 과: 1) 98례의 장중첩증 환아 중 일과성 소장형 장중첩증이 12례(12.3%), 전형적 장중첩증이 86례 (87.7%)였다. 2) 일과성 소장형 장중첩증은 3세 이상이 7례(53.8%)로서 가장 많았으나, 전형적 장중첩증은 6~12개월 사이가 27례(31.4%)로 가장 많았고, 3세 이상은 6례(7.0%)로서 일과성 소장형 장중첩증군은 전형적 장중첩증군에 비해 높은 연령군에서 잘 발생되었다(p<0.05). 성별 분포는 모두 남아가 여아보다 빈도가 높았다. 3) 일과성 소장형 장중첩증군은 지속적 복통을 호소하는 예가 7례(58.3%)로서 가장 많았고, 주기적 보챔 5례(41.7%), 구토 4례(33.4%)순이었다. 전형적 장중첩증군은 주기적 보챔 77례(91.9%), 구토 51례(59.3%) 혈변 36례(41.9%), 복부 종괴 23례(26.7%)순 이었고, 지속적인 복통만 호소하는 예는 1례(11.2%)로 나타나 주기적 보챔, 구토, 혈변, 복부종괴 등은 전형적 장중첩증군에서 잘 나타나나 일과성 소장형 장중첩증군에선 비교적 드물었고(p<0.05), 일과성 소장형 장중첩증군에선 지속적 복통을 호소하는 경우가 많았다(p<0.05). 4) 일과성 소장형 장중첩증군의 과녁 징후 전체의 두께와 주변부 저에코륜의 두께는 각각 $11.95{\pm}2.61$ mm, $2.08{\pm}1.15$ mm로 전형적 장중첩군의 두께 각각 $26.91{\pm}5.98$ mm, $7.86{\pm}2.77$ mm보다 적었다(p<0.05). 5) 일과성 소장형 장중첩증군에서는 동반된 질환이 8례(66.7%)였으나, 전형적 장중첩증군에서는 23례(26.7%)로서 일과성 소장형 장중첩증군에서 동반된 질환이 더 많았다(p<0.05). 6) 일과성 소장형 장중첩증군에서는 12례 모두 (100.0%)가 자연 정복되었고, 전형적 장중첩증군에서는 자연 정복된 경우는 1례도 없었고 대부분 (89.5%) 검압 통기법으로 정복되었다. 결 론: 일과성 소장형 장중첩증은 일반적으로 알려져 있는 것보다는 빈도가 높을 것으로 사료되며, 복부초음파 검사시 본 질환에 대한 관심을 가져야겠으며, 자연 정복되므로 특별한 원인이 없는 일과성 소장형 장중첩증은 즉각적인 수술이나 무리한 시술을 하기보다는 주의 깊은 관찰과 재검사가 필요할 것으로 사료된다.
