  • In this study, how branches of Kumho River affect to the water quality on Kumho River was investigated. Water samples from six sampling points at Kumho River and three at each branch were taken from Dec. 2009 to Dec. 2011. As results, Namcheon affected BOD and T-P concentrations on Kumho River while Sincheon did only T-P concentrations. However, the water quality of Kumho River was improved because of Sincheon in terms of BOD and COD concentrations. This was the results from management of Sincheon wastewater treatment facility and Jisan wastewater treatment facility which might be the best example for managing wastewater treatment facilities. Dalsecheon would not affect the water quality of Kumho River although it had bad conditions of water quality because of lack of its water quantity comparing to Kumho River's.

  • In order to determine the optimal water intake point, the distribution of blue-Green algae and water quality factors in relation to the depth of the Mulgum and Maeri stations located downstream of the Nakdong River were investigated from Jun. 2015 to Sep. 2016. When the current surface water intake system was converted to the deep water intake system, Chl-a concentration and blue-Green algae were reduced by 64.1% and 80.5%, respectively. Microcystin-LR was reduced by 50% to 100%, while geosmin and 2-MIB of the odorant substances were reduced by 42.9% and 11.8%, respectively. The water quality factors such as pH, water temperature, TOC and COD were gradually decreased by 30% in deep water. Therefore, if we used the deep water intake system selectively in the summer season when blue-Green algae masses occur, the concentration of the influx of blue-green algae and its by-products can be expected to decrease, leading to reduced operation costs in tap water production and improved of raw water quality.

  • In this study, auto-calibration method for water quality model was compared and analyzed using QUAL2Kw, which can estimate the optimum parameters through the integration of genetic algorithm and QUAL2K. The QUAL2Kw was applied to the Sum River which is greatly affected by the pollution loads of Wonju city. Two auto-calibration methods were examined: single parameter application for the whole river reach and separate parameter application for each reach of multiple reaches. The analysis about CV(RMSE) and fitness of the GA show that the separate parameter auto-calibration method is better than the single parameter method in the degree of precision. Thus the separate parameter auto-calibration method is applied to the water quality modelling of this study. The calibrated QUAL2Kw was used for the three scenarios for the water quality management of the Sum River, and the water quality impact on the river was analyzed. In scenario 1, which improve the effluent water quality of Wonju WWTP, BOD and TP concentrations of the Sum River 4-1 station which is representative one of Mid-Watershed, are decreased 17.7% and 29.1%, respectively. And immediately after joining the Wonjucheon, BOD and TP concentrations are decreased 50.4% and 40.5%, respectively. In scenario 2, Wonju water supply intake is closed and multi-regional water supply, which come from other watershed except the Sum River, is provided. The Sum River water quality in scenario 2 is slightly improved as the flow of the river is increased. Immediately after joining the Wonjucheon, BOD and TP concentrations are decreased 0.18mg/L and 0.0063mg/L, respectively. In scenario 3, the water quality management alternatives of scenario 1 and 2 are planned simultaneously, the Sum River water quality is slightly more improved than scenario 1. Water quality prediction of the three scenarios indicates that effluent water quality improvement of Wonju WWTP is the most efficient alternative in water quality management of the Sum River. Particularly the Sum River water quality immediately after joining the Wonjucheon is greatly improved. When Wonju water supply intake is closed and multi-regional water supply is provided, the Sum River water quality is slightly improved.

  • The current industrial development and the Increase of population along Nakdong River have produced a rapid Increase of wastewater discharge. This has resulted in problem of water quality control and management. Although many efforts have been carried out, water quality has not significantly improved. The goal of this study is to design a NGIS-based water quality management system for the scientific water quality control and management in the Nakdong River. For general water quality analysis, QULA2E model was applied to the Nakdong River. A sensitivity analysis was made to determine significant parameters and an optimization was made to estimate optimal values. The calibration and verification were performed by using observed water quality data for Nakdong River. A water qualify management system for Nakdong River was made by connecting the QUAL2E model to ArcView. It allows a Windows-based Graphic User Interface(GUI) to implement all operation with regard to water quality analysis. The modeling system in this study will be an efficient NGIS for planning of water quality management.

  • The purpose of this study was to invesitigate relationship between rainfall water quality and precipitation characteristic during the accumulated rainfall and rainless period. As the results of the analysis, rainfall water quality was improved in the rainfall duration. Correlation coefficients between rainwater quality and accumulated rainfall were $0.88{\sim}0.99$ except $Cl^-$. and that between rainless period and initial rainfall water quality were $0.62{\sim}0.75$. During the Asian dust event, concentration of the turbidity, BOD and electric conductivity were high. Therefore, it shows that the rainfall water quality is effected by atmospheric conditions before the rainfall events.

  • This study was designed to provide basic information for an effective wetland design by analyzing the correlation between wetland size and water quality improvement effect in regard to an artificial wetland inside the Biopark Basin by means of applying the modelling technique. It is expected that this study will contribute to a rational design, operation and management of the artificial wetland in the basin. The following conclusions are obtained through the results and discussion of this study. The results of respective design scenarios that expanded the size of the artificial wetlands in the range of 0-100 % showed that when the wetland is 'expanded 75 % compared with the existing size', water quality improved best compared with the design criteria of 'the current operation of the existing size'. The improved data are: 66.7 % in BOD5, 69.9 % in TSS, 64.7 % in T-N, 85.5 % in T-P and 51.8 % in Chl-a. In particular, with the exception of Chl-a, water quality improvement stood out in the quality items in summer among the four seasons. And that there in no direct relationship between facility scale and water quality improvement.

  • The Anyang River which located in an urban area near Seoul had been managed focusing on supplying home and industrial water and preventing floods, coping with rapid industrialization and urbanization. Consequently, it was changed into a deadly river during 25 years. Its channel was straightened by concrete and water quality deteriorated to BOD 190mg/l. In addition, water quantity has been rapidly decreased and has been drying up. Also, as the river ecosystem, landscape, water-friendly function, and so forth were seriously deteriorated, people turn away from the urban river. From 2001, the master plan under the 10-year has been actively carried out centering on the preceding items, which are healthy river in which fishes inhabit, safe river free from floods and droughts, and pleasant river where citizens visit. As a result, its water quality was remarkably improved by BOD 5mg/l in 2005 and some upper zones were improved enough to allow people to swim. Moreover, various animals including fish and birds gather around the river. Now, the 'Anyang River Restoration Project' is recognized as the first comprehensive and systematic nature-friendly urban river improvement in Korea.

  • Detailed flow analysis in river is essential to increase the accuracy of water quality simulation since flow variation depends on many factors such as cross sections, channel slopes, and bed materials. In the QUAL2E stream water quality simulation model, the hydraulic coefficients are assigned to the reach that is collection of computational element using the hydraulic coefficient. This study developed a module that can incorporate the results of non-uniform flow analysis and assign such information to each individual element. Model application focused on the upstream of the Hoengseong reservoir including the reservoir where significant flow change is expected. Comparing with original QUAL2E model the developed module improved the result of water quality simulation without considering the relation of flow velocity and flow depth in terms of flow rates.

  • The effect of the intercepting ratios on the water quality improvement was simulated by using Finite Segment Method in a urban river where intercepting sewer under the ground and constructing sewage treatment plant are now being proceeded. To simulate variations of the water quality caused by river flows, rating curve at each gaging station was derived from measurements. Water quality data were from the exiting observations at each key stations from 1990 to 1998, for 1999 and 2000 data we measured in creek and drainage ditch in addition to observation stations. It revealed that increasing the intercepting ratios improved the water quality.
