Rainfed Areas and Animal Agriculture in Asia: The Wanting Agenda for Transforming Productivity Growth and Rural Poverty

  • The importance of rainfed areas and animal agriculture on productivity enhancement and food security for economic rural growth in Asia is discussed in the context of opportunities for increasing potential contribution from them. The extent of the rainfed area of about 223 million hectares and the biophysical attributes are described. They have been variously referred to inter alia as fragile, marginal, dry, waste, problem, threatened, range, less favoured, low potential lands, forests and woodlands, including lowlands and uplands. Of these, the terms less favoured areas (LFAs), and low or high potential are quite widely used. The LFAs are characterised by four key features: i) very variable biophysical elements, notably poor soil quality, rainfall, length of growing season and dry periods, ii) extreme poverty and very poor people who continuously face hunger and vulnerability, iii) presence of large populations of ruminant animals (buffaloes, cattle, goats and sheep), and iv) have had minimum development attention and an unfinished wanting agenda. The rainfed humid/sub-humid areas found mainly in South East Asia (99 million ha), and arid/semi-arid tropical systems found in South Asia (116 million ha) are priority agro-ecological zones (AEZs). In India for example, the ecosystem occupies 68% of the total cultivated area and supports 40% of the human and 65% of the livestock populations. The area also produces 4% of food requirements. The biophysical and typical household characteristics, agricultural diversification, patterns of mixed farming and cropping systems are also described. Concerning animals, their role and economic importance, relevance of ownership, nomadic movements, and more importantly their potential value as the entry point for the development of LFAs is discussed. Two examples of demonstrated success concern increasing buffalo production for milk and their expanded use in semi-arid AEZs in India, and the integration of cattle and goats with oil palm in Malaysia. Revitalised development of the LFAs is justified by the demand for agricultural land to meet human needs e.g. housing, recreation and industrialisation; use of arable land to expand crop production to ceiling levels; increasing and very high animal densities; increased urbanisation and pressure on the use of available land; growing environmental concerns of very intensive crop production e.g. acidification and salinisation with rice cultivation; and human health risks due to expanding peri-urban poultry and pig production. The strategies for promoting productivity growth will require concerted R and D on improved use of LFAs, application of systems perspectives for technology delivery, increased investments, a policy framework and improved farmer-researcher-extension linkages. These challenges and their resolution in rainfed areas can forcefully impact on increased productivity, improved livelihoods and human welfare, and environmental sustainability in the future.

Improvement on the KFOOD Code for More Realistic Assessment of the Annual Food Chain Radiation Dose Due to Operating Nuclear Facilities (가동중 원자력 시설에 의한 년간 섭식경로 피폭선량 평가의 현실성 제고를 위한 KFOOD 코드의 개선)

  • More realistic calculation models for evaluating man's annual intakes of radionuclides released from operating nuclear facilities were established. For the application of these models, the harvest years of food and feed crops consumed in the year of dose assessment and every year's average concentrations of a radionuclide in air and in water for the whole period of real operation had to be taken into account. KFOOD, an existing equilibrium food chain computer code for the Korean dose assessment, was modified according to the models. Sample runs of the modified code on the assumption of a constant release during 10 years' operation were made with three kinds of the input data files enabling the dose assessment in the improved method, the KFOOD method and another existing method, respectively, and the results were compared. Annual committed effective doses to Korean adult by intakes of Mn-54, Co-60, Sr-90, I-131 and Cs-137 calculated in the improved method were about 11, 2, 5, 60 and 3%, respectively, lower than the corresponding KFOOD dose. To the intakes of the radionuclides except Sr-90 evaluated in the improved method, foliar uptake contributed much more than root uptake did but, in the case of Sr-90, the result was opposite.

Cognitive improvement effects of Momordica charantia in amyloid beta-induced Alzheimer's disease mouse model (여주의 amyloid beta 유도 알츠하이머질환 동물 모델에서 인지능력 개선 효과)

  • Accumulation of amyloid beta (Aβ) and oxidative stress are the most common reason of Alzheimer's disease (AD). In the present study, we investigated the cognitive improvement effects of butanol (BuOH) fraction from Momordica charantia in Aβ25-35-induced AD mouse model. To develop an AD mouse model, mice were received injection of Aβ25-35, and then orally administered BuOH fraction from M. charantia at doses of 100 and 200 mg/kg/day during 14 days. In the T-maze and novel object recognition test, administration of BuOH fraction from M. charantia L. at doses of 100 and 200 mg/kg/day improved spatial ability and novel object recognition by increased explorations of novel route and new object. In addition, BuOH fraction of M. charantia-administered groups improved learning and memory abilities by decreased time to reach hidden platform in Morris water maze test. Oral administration of BuOH fraction from M. charantia significantly inhibited lipid peroxidation and nitric oxide levels in the brain, liver, and kidney compared with Aβ25-35-induced control group. These results indicated that BuOH fraction of M. charantia improved Aβ25-35-induced cognitive impairment by attenuating oxidative stress. Therefore, M. charantia could be useful for protection from Aβ25-35-induced cognitive impairment.

Effects of Nutrition Education on Overweight and Obese Children in Chonbuk Area -Focus on Food Habit, Eating Behaviors, Dietary Attitude, Nutrition Knowledge and Nutrients Intake- (전북지역 과체중 및 비만아동의 영양교육 효과 -식습관, 식행동, 식생활 태도, 영양지식과 영양소 섭취 상태를 중심으로-)

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of nutrition education focus on food habit, eating behaviors, dietary attitude, nutrition knowledge, and nutrients intake. The nutrition education was provided to 103 overweight and obese children in Chonbuk area. Nutrition education lessons were conducted 40 min/lesson, 12 times in year (6 times/semester). We assessed the change in knowledge using a questionnaire on food habit, eating behaviors, dietary attitude, nutrition knowledge and nutrients intake using 24 hr recall method. After the nutrition education, dietary habits were significantly improved. Especially, the answer of 'Don't eat when feel full' were significantly improved (boys (p<0.01), girls (p<0.05)). And the answer of 'Eat sugar meal frequently (chocolate, candy)' which is a dietary attitude question was significantly improved (girls (p<0.05)). There were positively changes in the dietary attitude and nutrition knowledge, but there were no significant differences after program. The results suggest that this nutrition education must be continue for positive food habit change in the long term.

Comparative Studies of the Combined Dietary Animal and Vegetable Proteins on Growing and Blood Compositions the Weanling Rats and Mice (식이중의 동물성 및 식물성단백질의 종류와 배합비율에 따른 흰쥐 (Rat)와 흰생쥐 (Mouse)의 성장과 혈액성분에 관한 비교연구)

  • In order to investigate the effect of the combined dietary animal and vegetable proteins on growing female and male rats and mice. 25 female and 25 male rats of 4 weeks old weighing approximately 43-65g and 47-60g, respectively, were subjected to feeding trials for 4 weeks and then subsequently to metabolic trials for 10 days. In case of mice, 25 female and 25 male mice of 4 weeks old weighing approximately 12-17g and 12-16g, respectively, were equally treated. The dietary energy level was set as 3600 kcal ME/kg, and protein and fat provided respectively 12 and 5% of the dietary energy. The rest 83% of the energy level was supplied with appropriate amounts of starch and glucose. The following results were obtained. The body weight gain of female and male rats were increased as the combined dietary animal protein level increased. Whereas that of male mice was the highest for the diet E(Ap 10+Vp 90). Food efficiencies both of female and male rats were improved as combined dietary of animal protein increased. Male rats were superior to that of female. In the mice, the food efficiency value of male mice was superior to that of female. And the values of the male showed the same fashion as that in the growth rate, although it was not for the female. Protein efficiencies, both of female and male rats, were improved as combined dietary of animal protein level increased. That of male mice was in accord with the body weight gain and food efficiencies. But that of female mice was not accordant. Nitrogen retention of the experimental diets in the same protein level was in proportion to nitrogen intake. That of male mice was improved as animal protein level increased, but, that of female mice was not. Body protein utilizability was found to be superior in mice to rats. Blood serum protein level was not found to be affected by the experimental diets in the same protein level. The best combination ratio of animal and vegetable protein seems to be variable depending on the sex and species of animals, and the best diets for female and male rats and female and male mice were found to be experimental diet A(Ap 10+Vp 90) or diet B(Ap 75+Vp 25), diet C(Ap 50+Vp 50), and diet E(Ap 10+Vp 90), respectively. From the above-mentioned results that there was no difference in growth rate of body weight gain from the weanling period to puberty, and that the protein requirements of rats and mice were different from each other.

Production and characterization of rice starch from stale rice using improved enzymatic digestion method (개선된 효소소화법에 의한 고미로부터 쌀전분의 생산 및 특성)

  • The objective of this study was to investigate the physicochemical properties of rice starch extracted from stale rice using alkaline steeping (AKL) and improved enzymatic digestion (iENZ) methods. The crude protein content (0.5-0.7%) of stale rice starch (SRS) was less than 1% by iENZ, but not so when measured by the existing ENZ methods. SRS is an intermediate amylose rice starch. AKL-SRS and iENZ-SRS exhibited typical A-type crystal packing arrangements with similar relative crystallinities. iENZ-SRS showed higher gelatinization onset and peak temperatures with a narrower gelatinization temperature range, compared to those of AKL-SRS, indicating that iENZ annealed SRS. Thus, iENZ-SRS exhibited lower swelling power and solubility, and higher pasting viscosities with delayed viscosity development. Overall, the use of stale rice as a rice starch source could make economical production of rice starch possible, and iENZ may diversify rice starch characteristics, which expands the utilization of rice starch in food and non-food industries.

Optimal Manufacturing Conditions for Korean Soybean Paste and Soy Sauce, Using Aspergillus oryzae AJ 100 as a Flavor Improver

  • Previously, it has been reported that Aspergillus oryzae can efficiently degrade unpleasant odor components such as butyric acid and 3-methyl butanoic acid from meju, a major ingredient in both Korean soybean paste (doenjang) and soy sauce. In this study, the optimal manufacturing conditions for the production of superior quality Korean soybean paste and soy sauce were determined. Specifically, A. oryzae AJ 100 was utilized to improve the flavor of these products. Mixtures of Korean soybean paste and A. oryzae AJ 100 culture (2 : 1), and of Korean soy sauce and A. oryzae AJ 100 culture (5 : 1), were incubated for 2 weeks at $30^{\circ}C$, and showed improved flavor. Butyric acid and 3-methyl butanoic acid were clearly degraded under these culture conditions.

Metabolomic Investigation on Fermentation Products of Achyranthes japonica Nakai by Lactobacillus plantarum

  • Fermentation has recently re-emerged as an approach for improved functionality of food products in addition to the traditional roles such as shelf life, taste, and texture. Here, we report dynamic changes in the metabolite profiles of Achyranthes japonica Nakai by Lactobacillus plantarum fermentation, primarily, the significant increases in representative functional ingredients, 20-hydroxyecdysone and 25S-inokosterone. Additionally, untargeted metabolite profiling showed 58% of metabolites underwent significant alteration. The most dynamic change was observed in cellobiose, which showed a 56-fold increase. Others were sugar alcohols and amino acids, while lyxitol and erythritol that were among the most dynamically down-regulated.

Effect of Resveratrol on Coxsackie Virus B3m-induced Myocarditis in Mice

  • To observe the intervening effect of resveratrol on coxsackie virus B3m-induced myocarditis in Balb/c mice and explore the mechanism of intervening effect. Using an animal model of viral myocarditis induced by coxsackie virus B3m (CVB3m), with Ribavirin and Astragalan as comparison, to examine the changes of general condition, mortality, the weights of heart, liver and spleen, serum MDA and NO levels, and cardiac histology in Balb/c mice. By comparison with Ribavirin and Astragalan, it was found that in the mice model of viral myocarditis induced by coxsackie virus B3m resveratrol significantly improved the changes of general condition, mortality, the weights of heart, liver and spleen, serum MDA and NO levels, and cardiac histology. It suggested that resveratrol may have some chemopreventive and chemotherapeutic effects in the treatment of viral myocarditis.

Amino acid requirements in horses

  • Evaluating amino acid requirements, specifically threonine requirements, in horses will enable better feed formulation and result in economic production, improved animal health, and reduced environmental pollution. However, the current knowledge of protein and amino acid requirements in horses is still limited. Because horses have a unique digestive system and consume a variety of feed ingredients, their protein digestibility may be affected than other species by different feed composition, and thus amino acid requirements are susceptible to vary between situations. Therefore, a careful evaluation of amino acid requirements with a proper method is needed for various conditions. This review will also provide comprehensive information that needs to be considered when designing an amino acid requirement study in horses.
