  • The food shortage in North Korea is a serious situation that has spanned the mid-1990s to today. North Korean refugee children, even those born in North Korea, China, or South Korea, had poor nutritional status at birth; thus, their growth and nutritional status should be continuously monitored. This review focused on the health status of North Korean children and the nutritional status of North Korean refugee children upon settling in South Korea. Immediately after entering South Korea, North Korean refugee children were shorter and lighter than South Korean children and had a serious nutritional status. Over time, their nutrition status improved, but they remained shorter and lighter than South Korean children. A new obesity problem was also observed. Therefore, it is necessary to continuously monitor their growth and nutritional status.

  • Korean Emission Trading Scheme entered into force on 1 January 2015. As other Emission Trading Systems, Korean Emission Trading System also have some deficiencies to be complemented and improved. Thus, the issues that are related to legal characteristics of emission allowance and its status as a financial instrument, terminology, requisites for the designation of the business entities eligible for allocation, banking and borrowing, and the non-permanence problems in the forestry offset mechanism are reviewed and the directions of the improvement are presented. The review of the Korean Emission Trading Scheme and its relevant act and the presidential decree at its early stage may be helpful for the Korean ETS to be firmly settled and to operate properly.

  • Finding alternative and renewable energy sources has become an important goal for plant scientists, especially with the demand for energy increasing worldwide and the supply of fossil fuel being depleted. The most important biofuel to date is bioethanol which is produced from sugars (sucrose and starch) found in corn and sugarcane. Second generation bioethanol is targeting studies that would allow the use of the cell wall (lignocellulose) as a source of carbon by non-food plants. Plant scientists, including breeders, agronomists, physiologists and molecular biologists, are working towards the development of new and improved energy crops especially, how to design crops for bioenergy production and increased biomass generation for biofuel purposes. This review focuses on: i) the current status of first generation bioenergy production, ii) the limitations of first and second generation bioenergy, and iii) ongoing research to overcome challenging issues in second generation bioenergy.

  • Artificial bee colony algorithm is a strong global search algorithm which exhibits excellent exploration ability. The conventional ABC algorithm adopts employed bees, onlooker bees and scouts to cooperate with each other. However, its one dimension and greedy search strategy causes slow convergence speed. To enhance its performance, in this paper, we abandon the greedy selection method and propose an artificial bee colony algorithm with special division and intellective search (ABCIS). For the purpose of higher food source research efficiency, different search strategies are adopted with different employed bees and onlooker bees. Experimental results on a series of benchmarks algorithms demonstrate its effectiveness.

  • Historical background and present status of Korean functional sericulture was reviewed. Five-year expansion projects began in 1962, and produced 41,700 tons of cocoon in 1976 and exported $271 million. However, the number of silkworm rearing households reduced to 59,800 by 1987 from 488,000 in 1976 due to rapid development of the secondary and the tertiary industries with higher labor cost. That's why functional sericulture was developed in Korea. Freeze-dried silkworm powder was found that it lowered the level of blood glucose. Nuedongchunghacho, Paecilomyces tenuipes, was cultured on silkworm larva. Odi, the fruit of mulberry trees, was studied as a new food ingredient. Mulberry tree varieties for improved Odi production were also developed.

  • This study was conducted to develop an efficient high performance range hood and exhaust system for quickly discharging flue gas, smoke, and odor generated when food is cooked in the kitchen, and the following results were obtained. Reverse current rate of 1.53 m/s of the range exhaust system was improved to achieve the inlet speed of 0.3 m/s or less. An efficient range system was constructed by improving the hood exhaust flow by 5.6 m/s at the existing 4.5 m/s.

  • Antidiabetic activity of formular containing an Euonymus alata (EA) and Mori Foluim (MF) was investigated in oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) and multiple low dose Streptozotocin (MLDSTZ)-induced rats. Optimum ratio between EA and MF was found to be 1:1 in OGTT, and two strengths (250 and 500 mg/kg for each medicinal plant) were coadministered with 20 mg/kg of STZ in 5 consecutive days. At 3rd week, water and food intakes were compared between groups and polydipsia and polyphagia shown in diabetic control were markedly improved in dose dependent manner. (omitted)

  • When cationic basic compounds are chromatographed using hydro-organic mobile phase, the presence of anionic free silanols in the silica-based stationary phases results in broad and asymmetrical peaks. The addition of an ionic reagent to the mobile phase prevents analytes from accessing free silanols, improving peak shape. In this study, the chromatographic behavior of salbutamol sulfate as a basic compound was investigated under various conditions, including the use of different columns, mobile phases, and ion-pair reagents such as triethanolamine (TEA) and sodium heptane sulfonate (SHS). The retention and peak shape of chromatograms were both evaluated. The results show that pre-conditioning the column with TEA and including it in the mobile phase can prevent cationic analytes from accessing anionic silanols, resulting in improved peak shape. Furthermore, buffering the mobile phase is an important factor in keeping the pH constant throughout the process. The chosen method was validated in part. This study could be helpful for researchers and analyst to solve such problems with cationic basic components.

  • In modern society, since the expansion of the e-commerce market and the spread of the pandemic, face-to-face business are gradually changing to non-face-to-face. In the logistics industry, the demand for unmanned courier storage is increasing due to lack of loading space from urbanization and courier theft accidents. As the demand for unmanned parcel lockers increases, improved functions such as food storage and efficient space loading are required. This study develops an integrated model-based evaluation procedure of product based on performance factors according to the IEC 61508 standard for newly unmanned parcel storage devices with active loading technology, and derive Critical Technology Element based on the product's core functions and performance goals. As proposing these research, We expect improve the safety and reliability of development targets by identifying and evaluating elements.

  • The Joseon Dynasty lasted for 618 years, from 1392 to 1910, and is regarded as one of the development periods of Korea in various areas, including politics, culture, economy, and society. During this period, the government undertook various measures to try to change the state of the economy and generally transform people's living standards. These were some of the strategies founded on Confucianism, which focused on the right way to govern and manage the economy to attain prosperity for the society. The present study explores government development strategies for improving the economy in Joseon Dynasty period using comprehensive literature analysis via Kci, Scopus, Web of Science databases. Indeed, agricultural transformations during the Joseon dynasty clearly show that knowledge and innovation were critical for encouraging agricultural growth. Therefore, today's South Korean government can implement technological advancement and research to improve its agricultural value chain and food security. Many farmers lack knowledge about improved methods of practicing agriculture or have inadequate capital to invest in research and development; these issues can be dealt with by the relevant government agencies putting in place necessary policies and creating awareness through educational programs and articles.
