This study examined college students' propensity for materialism and conspicuous consumption, and their preference for imported-luxury brand products. This study also identified the factors that influence college students preference for the imported-luxury brands. The data were obtained from a questionnaire completed by 4-year-college students (N=309), and were analyzed by t-tests, ANOVA, and multiple regression analyses. The findings of this study are as follows: First, college students' propensities for both materialism and conspicuous consumption were a little higher than the middle points of the scales. Their preference for imported-luxury brands was a little below the middle point of the scale. Second, the propensity for materialism was higher among first- and second-year students than among third- and fourth-year students. The occupation of household head was significantly related with the levels of materialism and conspicuous consumption, as well as the preference for imported-luxury brand products. Female students were more likely to prefer imported-luxury brands. Those with a higher income and subjective level of living were more likely to have the propensity for conspicuous consumption and preferences for imported-luxury brands. Third, the imported-luxury brands preferences were positively associated with the propensities for both materialism and conspicuous consumption.
Squid jeotgal is a very popular traditional, salted, and fermented seafood in Korea. Due to the development of a distribution structure, a lot of imported squid jeotgal has recently entered Korea. In this study, we analyzed and compared the microbial contamination levels of domestic and imported squid jeotgal. The total viable bacterial count in domestic and imported jeotgal was 5.20 and 5.38 log CFU/g, respectively. The highest contamination level was 6.94 log CFU/g in one of the imported squid jeotgal samples. Coliforms were not detected in domestic jeotgal but were detected at 50% with 2.21 log CFU/g in imported jeotgal. Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus were not detected (ND: <1 log CFU/g) in both domestic and imported jeotgal. All samples of jeotgal were negative for Bacillus cereus and Clostridium perfringens. The microbial contamination levels determined in the current study may be utilized as primary data to execute microbial risk assessments on domestic and (or) imported jeotgal.
To investigate the perception and consumption of imported and organic produce, a survey was conducted using a questionnaire in Seoul, Taejon and Cheongju from February to March in 1995. The responses of 350 housewives were analyzed. Most of the subjects (96.8%) know an increase of imported produce, and 86.3% thought that imported produce was not safe. Ninety-two percent of the subjects preferred domestic produce to imported produce. The reasons were for the support of domestic farming (36.7%), hazardous chemicals in imported produce (25.0%), good taste (24.1%) and high quality of domestic produce (13.1%). Seventy-eight percent of the subjects had purchased imported produce. The reasons for purchase were cheap price (67.7%), high quality (16.2%), and good taste (5.4%). Imported produce were purchased in the following order ; fruits such as banana, kiwi, orange and grapefruit, seasonings such as garlic and sesame, vegetables such as onion, braken and green onion, and beans and grains such as soybean, red bean, and barley. Most of the subjects (94.3%) had been informed on organic produce. Among these, 45.2% obtained the information by TV or radio. However, son for purchase was low residual chemicals (64.6%). The reasons against purchase were inconvenience of purchase (42.3%), high price (25.4%), and disbelief of low residual chemicals (19.7%). Therefore, domestic produce should be good in quality and taste, and be safe without residual chemicals in order to compete with imported produce with cheap price. Informations on organic and imported produce should be provided to consumers, and the distribution system of organic produce should be improved for consumers convenience.
This study used questionnaires to investigate the safety awareness for imported foods by 365 male and female adults in Taejon. The results of the study were as follow : By factor analysis, the subjects' behaviors and awareness of the imported food was grouped into 3 factors such as 'health and quality factor', 'purchasing factor' and 'contamination factor'. 'Health and quality factor' and 'purchasing factor' were not recognized negatively by the subjects, moreover' contamination factor' was recognized very highly. The subjects' concern and worry about the imported food was also very high. The marital status, education level, nutriton knowledge adn recognition level of contamination by pesticides and heavy metals of foods partially affected the recognitio level of imported foods. The major selection criteria of imported food were distribution period(36.3%), price(28.8%) and purchasing experience(17.3%). The imported food mean discrimination score was 8.4±3.1 out of 13. The worst discriminatio score was red pepper. The subjects' experiences with imported foods selection affected the most instead of education level or nutrition knowledge. The higher discrimination score group more negatively recognized imported food and contamination recognition level was higher whereas the lowerdiscrimination score group more positively recognized the purchasing frequency and with to buy more easily. But both groups desired to reinforce contamination control. The better discrimination score of imported food pooring recognized sanitation concerns(p<0.05), quality(p<0.05), cooking convenience(p<0.01), desire for more variety(p<0.05), and the higher contamination recognition level(p<0.05) and desire to reinforce contamination control(p<0.01).
Recently, peoples of travelling to endemic area of parasitit diseases are rapidly increased and the imported parasitic diseases by tourists have become a public health problem. Here author describess briefly about the imported parasitic in Korea. The 15 kinds of parasitic diseases, I.e., malaria, babesiosis, cutaneous leishmaniasis, visceral leishmaniasis, ancylostomiasis, cutaneous larva migrans, angiostrongylosis, gnathostomiasis, loiasis, heterophyiasis, urinary schistosomiasis, hydatis disease, pentastomiasis, cutaneous myiasis and syngamosis were imported during last thirty years. The most prevalent imported parasitic disease was malaria. Indigenous vivax malaria has been eradicated since 1970s. However imported malaria(1970~1985) was reported 107 cases of patient with a history of travel abroad. Futhermore a case of reemerging vivax malaria was patient were occurred in 2000.These parasitic disease are sometimes overlooked or misdiagnosed. There is a need to concern about travel medicine and imported parasitic diseases.

In domestic replacement tire market, imported tires are increasing condinuously. Because there is no institute officially investigating tire safety and performance, domestic drivers can be exposed to defective tires with no regulations. In this study we performed investigation of replacement tire market status and amount of imported tires. Over $90\%$ of imported tires are for passenger car and the number of total imported tires is increasing in recent years. Low price tires imported from Southeast Asia and China are selected to evaluate quality level. Basic inspection, indoor test, outdoor test, material test are conducted to evaluate the selected tires and compared with tires of domestic maker. From test results quality level of the selected tires could be found.
This study analyzes the impact of Import beer demand on Anti-Japanese sentiment. Recently anti-Japanese sentiment heightened by the media was found to be drastically reducing the consumption of Japanese beer in the domestic imported beer market. Thus, the study used the import demand function of imported beer to analyze the impact of the 'Priming Effect' on the consumption of imported beer by anti-national sentiment, indicating a significant drop in Japanese beer consumption in other countries. Therefore, this study used the imported beer import demand function by country to analyze the impact of the priming effect on imported beer consumption according to anti-national sentiment. As a result, in the case of imported beer consumption in other countries, it was estimated that indirect consumption substitution occurred considerably.
This study investigated the effects of imported fisheries products on WTO/DDA tariff negotiations. To calculate the results, the study estimated the demand functions of imported fisheries products by using unit root and cointegration approaches. These approaches allowed us to solve spurious regression problems with macro-economic variables. In addition, this study surmised the effects of change by individually imported fish products from a tariff negotiation model using price elasticities of estimated import demand function. In a process of the analysis for estimating import effects, this study found out that 39 out of 128 imported fish products had positive (+) price elasticities or did not exhibit cointegrations. To cure this problem, this study suggested that the effects of these 39 imported products be estimated with the average variation rate of import volume, rather than by the Ordinary Least Squares approach. In this study, a case-study of tariff formula with coefficient 8 based on a 'Swiss formula' for priority duty rate of 2001 and 2008 was used by to analyze the effect of change in the 128 imported fish products of both years, respectively.
The effect of imported young bulls on the genetic progress was examined in the Holstein dairy cattle population in Japan. The effect of the difference of mean genetic merit between imported and domestic young bulls ("genetic difference") was recognized on the genetic progress of the domestic animals in the early stage of selection. On the other hand, the genetic progress of domestic animals were remarkably influenced by the genetic trend of imported young bulls ("genetic trend") in the later stage. Import of young bulls originated from high genetic level of young bulls originated from high genetic level population improved the genetic progress of domestic population. But, the increase of the immigration ratio of imported young bulls ("immigration ratio") did not influence linearly on the progress of the genetic merit of domestic animals. Even if "immigration ratio" was 100%, the genetic merit of domestic animals could not overcome the one of imported young bulls. In the later stage of selection, the genetic merit of domestic animals ran parallel to those of imported young bulls.
The physicochemical characteristics of 4 domestic wheat flour products were compared to those of 4 imported wheat flour products marketed in Korea. The contents of moisture, ash, protein, total dietary fiber (TDF), color (L, a, b), whiteness, solvent retention capacity (SRC), water absorption index (WAI), water soluble index (WSI), pasting characteristics by rapid visco analyzer (RVA), and principle component analysis (PCA) were analyzed. The domestic wheat flour products were composed of higher content in ash and protein, compared to the imported wheat flour products. The domestic wheat flour products had lower SRC and WSI characteristics than the imported wheat flour products. The values of lactic acid SRC (LASRC) in the imported wheat flour products showed an increasing trend as the protein content increased. The differences in viscosity were observed in the domestic wheat flour products. However, no major significant differences of viscosity were found among the imported wheat flour products. The result of PCA showed a consistent trend in the imported wheat flour (strong, medium, and weak), while a consistent trend was not shown in the domestic wheat flour products. Therefore, further research is needed to standardize the different types of domestic wheat flour products.
