MTG(Micro turbine generator) operating at 400,000 rpm is under development and the impact test rig to measure the dynamic stiffness and damping coefficient of air foil bearing for high speed rotor is presented in this study. The stiffness and damping coefficient of air foil bearing depending on the rotational speed can be measured easily and effectively by using the simple configuration of impact test rig which is composed of air gun, gap sensors and high speed motor. The estimation results of stiffness and dampling coefficient using least square estimation method is presented as well.
In this study, investigations were conducted in calculating parameters of elastic-plastic fracture mechanics using single specimen. The validity of these testing methods was judged by the confirmation of multiple specimen method of stop block test. The results were as follows: In order to measure a fracture toughness using the instrumented impact test, two general requirement must be considered; One, setting up proper impact velocity considered the effect of loading and the other, the necessity of low blow test for obtaining true energy by the compliance correction. It was possible to detect a crack initiation point by calculating the compliance changing rate from a load-defection curve. Criterion of a stable crack growth, $T_{mat}$ could be estimated by using key-curve method for a base metal. and combining Kaiser's rebound compliance with Paris-Hutchison's $T_{appl}$ equation for the brittled zone of welding heat affected.at affected.d.

Although most bridge foundations are usually constructed by Caisson, terrain difficulties sometimes bring about constructing bridge foundations by Jacket piles. This study investigated the dynamic characteristics of Caisson and Jacket by testing the impact applied to actual bridge foundations. The test result showed that the damping ratio of the foundation constructed by Jacket and Caisson were measured 1-2% and 3-6%, respectively. Considering the lateral deflection measured by the impact test, the rigidity of foundations constructed by Jacket was assessed about 1/5 - 1/6 of those constructed by Caisson. It implies that designing bridge foundations should include and reflect the dynamic analysis of bridge foundation.

A new hydrocode which is still under development using Lagrangian, Eulerian and arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian operators, has been described. The three operators are implemented into a single framework by incorporating the sequential three stages of Lagrangian, remesh and remap stages. Several numerical schemes used for each operator are discussed briefly in this paper. In order to evaluate the characteristics of each operator, the Taylor Impact Test has been simulated using each operator and the results are compared. Currently the code is 1st order accuracy in the material interface tracking algorithm and can not handle multimaterial in the mixed cell. The areas of possible enhancement of the code are also discussed.

The purpose of this study is to develop a prediction model for evaluating heavy-weight floor impact sounds in a test building. Three rooms in the test building (slab thickness In and 240mm), which consist of frame concrete structures were tested and modeled. First, the SPL distribution in the receiving room was analyzed by measuring SPL at 90 positions using a bang machine. Then, a vibration model using finite element method is proposed considering the material properties and boundary conditions. In addition, the result of transient analysis was compared with field measurements using a standard heavy-weight impact source. Through a vibro-acoustic simulation program, an acoustic model evaluating the building elements (reflected wall, nor, window and door) was proposed. Finally, validation of the prediction model was conducted by vibro-acoustic analysis with field measurements of noise radiation characteristics in receiving rooms.

Wide range frequency pulses occur in a car crash test. Until now, low frequency under 400Hz has been used to determine an airbag deployment criteria. Also, FIS (Front Impact Sensor) has been used to detect the crash pulse in early stage. Nowadays, technology to determine an airbag delpoyment criteria by using a high frequency crash pulse without FIS is being focused on. In this paper, the signal transmissibility of high frequency pulse for two different cars was studied. Also, signal transfer test of high frequency pulse was done by using a high speed ball impact. Signal runtime of the frontal impact is compared with that of the side impact. The signal transmissibility difference due to the car structure difference was discussed and structure change for improving the signal transmissibility was proposed.

It is increasing the interest on the comfortable dwelling environment and the efforts to solve the problem of the floor impact noise in apartment houses have been realized, as a result numerous products have been made. The purpose of this study is to investigate the sound insulation performances according to foaming rate of floor impact noise insulators and flooring coverings in Mock-up Test Room. The test results of impact insulation performance for each floor impact noise insulators is that double structure of insulator is excel than one in low-middle frequency band and as foaming rate go up, the sound insulation performance is improved.
Impact modifier reinforced polymers are frequently used. In this study, Izod impact test has been simulated to analyze the mechanism of impact reinforcement of Nylon6 which contains impact modifier. The modeling of rubber particles added to Nylon6 as an impact modifier has been attempted. Based on the modeling, simulation of Izod impact test has been performed to observe the distribution and direction of stress at the cross-section of impact specimen. Three computer simulation models for Nylon6 were investigated. Those were without impact modifier, containing impact modifier without surface treatment, and containing impact modifier with surface treatment in the Nylon6. Simulation results showed that the stress which originated at the notch surface propergated to the inside of specimen round a impact modifier. In addition to that, impact modifier reinforced Nylon6 specimen showed low stress ditribution in the cross-section specially at notch surface. Principal stress in perpendicular direction to crack was also lowered in impact modifier reinforced Nylon6. These enhanced impact resistance reduced and crack propergations. Through this study it was realized that the computer simulation can be utilized to investigate the property enhacement of composite materials.
In this study, the Charpy impact test along with metallurgical observation was conducted to evaluate low temperature impact toughness of structural steel welds with different welding processes to find out the optimal welding process to guarantee the required impact toughness at low temperatures. The welding processes employed are shield metal arc welding (SMAW) and flux cored arc welding(FCAW), which are commonly used welding methods in construction. The Charpy impact test is a commercial quality control test for steels and other alloys used in the construction of metallic structures. The test allows the material properties for service conditions to be determined experimentally in a simple manner with a very low cost. To investigate the impact toughness at low temperatures of the steel welds, specimens were extracted from the weld metal and the heat affected zone. Standard V-notch Charpy specimens were prepared and tested under dynamic loading condition. The low temperature impact performance was evaluated based on the correlation between the absorbed energy and the microstructure. Analysis of the results showed that the optimal welding process to ensure the higher low temperature impact toughness of the HAZ and the weld metal is SMAW process using the welding consumable for steels targeted to low temperature use.
The structural integrity of a dual-purpose metal cask currently under development by the Korea Radioactive Waste Agency (KORAD) was evaluated, through numerical simulations and a model test, under high-speed missile impact reflecting targeted aircraft crash conditions. The impact conditions were carefully chosen through a survey on accident cases and recommendations from literature. In the impact scenario, a missile flying horizontally hits the top side of the cask, which is freestanding on a concrete pad, with a velocity of 150 m/s. A simplified missile simulating a commercial aircraft engine was designed from an impact loade-time function available in literature. In the analyses, the dynamic behavior of the metal cask and the integrity of the containment boundary were assessed. The simulation results were compared with the test results for a 1:3 scale model. Although the dynamic behavior of the cask in the model test did not match exactly with the prediction from the numerical simulation, other structural responses, such as the acceleration and strain history during the impact, showed very good agreement. Moreover, the containment function of the cask survived the missile impact as expected from the numerical simulation. Thus, the procedure and methodology adopted in the structural numerical analyses were successfully validated.
