  • Many of researches regarding mechanical properties of composite materials are associated with humid environment and temperature. Especially the temperature is a very important factor influencing the design of thermoplastic composites. However, the effect of temperature on impact behavior of reinforced composites have not yet been fully explored. An approach which predicts critical fracture toughness G$_{IC}$ was performed by the impact test in this work. The main goal of this work is to study the effect of temperature and span of specimen supports on the results of Charpy impact test for GF/PE composite. The critical fracture energy and failure mechanism of GF/PE composites were investigated in the temperature range of $60^{\circ}C;to;-50^{\circ}C$ by the Charpy impact test. The critical fracture energy showed the maximum at the ambient temperature, and it tended to decrease as the temperature increased or decreased from the ambient temperature. The major failure mechanisms are the fiber matrix debonding, the fiber pull-out and/or delamination and the matrix deformation.n.

  • The purpose of this paper is presented a rational method of predicting dynamic/impact tensile strength of high tensile steel materials widely used fur structural material of automobiles. It is known that the ultimate strength is related with the loading speed and the Lethargy Coefficient from the tensile test. The Dynamic Lethargy Coefficient is proportional to the disorientation of the molecular structure and indicates the magnitude of defects resulting from the probability of breaking the bonds responsible for its strength. The coefficient is obtained from the simple tensile test such as failure time and stresses at fracture. These factors not only affect the static strength but also have a great influence on the dynamic/impact characteristics of the joist and the adjacent structures. This strength is used to analyze the failure life prediction of mechanical system by virtue of its material fracture. The impact tensile test is performed to evaluate the life parameters due to loading speed with the proposed method. Also the evaluation of the dynamic/impact effect on the material tensile strength characteristics is compared with the result of Campbell-Cooper equation to verify the proposed method.

  • This study examined the dynamic response of a subsea pipeline under an impact load to determine the effect of the seabed soil. A laboratory-scale soil-based pipeline impact test was carried out to investigate the pipeline deformation/strain as well as the interaction with the soil-pipeline. In addition, an impact test was simulated using the finite element technique, and the calculated strain was compared with the experimental results. During the simulation, the pipeline was described based on an elasto-plastic analysis, and the soil was modeled using the Mohr-Coulomb failure criterion. The results obtained were compared with ASME D31.8, and the differences between the analysis results and the rules were specifically investigated. Modified ASME formulae were proposed to calculate the precise structural behavior of a subsea pipeline under an impact load when considering sand- and clay-based seabed soils.

  • In recent years, WorldSID has been continuously developed and investigated to be the representative biofidelic anthropomorphic test device (ATD) as well as the device for replacement of the current EuroSID-2. In Korea, the side impact accident is one of the major severe accidents in terms of the number of accidents and fatality. Since 2003, the side crash test with a speed of 50 kph in the perpendicular direction has been initiated as a safety standard with EuroSID-1 at the first stage. Simultaneously, a 55 kph impact test has been conducted as a part of Korean New Car Assessment (KNCAP). Currently, only EuroSIDE-2 is accepted as a regulatory tool for vehicle certification and KNCAP. The tests with WorldSID are conducted experimentally in order to use WorldSID of the KNCAP in near future.

  • Objective : A study of the histopathologic and neurobehavioral correlates of cortical impact injury produced by increasing impact velocity using the controlled cortical impact[CCI] injury model is studied. Methods : Twenty-four Sprague-Dawley rats [$200{\sim}250g$] were given CCI injury using a pneumatically driven piston. Effect of impact velocity on a 3mm deformation was assessed at 2.5m/sec [n=6], 3.0m/sec [n=6], 3.5m/sec [n=6], and no injury [n=6]. After postoperative 24hours the rats were evaluated using several neurobehavioral tests including the rotarod test, beam-balance performance, and postural reflex test. Contusion volume and histopathologic findings were evaluated for each of the impact velocities. Results : On the rota rod test, all the injured rats exhibited a significant difference compared to the sham-operated rats and increased velocity correlated with increased deficit [p<0.001]. Contusion volume increased with increasing impact velocity. For the 2.5, 3.0, and 3.5m/sec groups, injured volumes were $18.8{\pm}2.3mm^3$, $26.8{\pm}3.1mm^3$, and $32.5{\pm}3.5mm^3$, respectively. In addition, neuronal loss in the hippocampal sub-region increased with increasing impact velocity. In the TUNEL staining, all the injured groups exhibited definitely positive cells at pericontusional area. However, there were no significant differences in the number of positive cells among the injured groups. Conclusion : Cortical impact velocity is a critical parameter in producing cortical contusion. Severity of cortical injury is proportional to increasing impact velocity of cortical injury.

  • It is necessary to have a dummy that describes the anthropometry of a victim with accuracy. This study presents three scaled side impact dummies constructed for the use of MADYMO. They represent five, fifty and ninety-five percentile Korean males ranged from the age of 25 through 39. Thirty-five anthropometric data were used to scale input files required for MADYSCALE. Geometries, inertia, joints and other parameters for dummies were scaled based on the configurations of EuroSID-1. This study proposes the lateral impact response requirements for head, thorax and pelvis of Korean side impact dummies. A lateral drop impact test was conducted for the head at the height of 200 mm. Lateral pendulum impact tests were also carried out for thorax and pelvis at three specific impact velocities. All these test results were obtained from simulation based on MADYMO. All the procedures of the three tests followed the requirement of ISO/TR 9790.

  • The impact sound of the golf club is one of the major factors to purchase it. Sound qualify evaluation techniques are mostly developed for harmonic sounds. Sound quality metrics for the impact sound is proposed in this study. Jury test, one of the typical subjective evaluation scheme, is carried out for evaluating the sound quality of 11 different golf drivers. Above subjective classification results are assumed to be the right answers. Conventional objective evaluation methods such as Zwicker loudness sensory pleasantness are calculated. Wavelet analysis and instantaneous loudness are applied in order to evaluate the transient sounds, which shows better correlation with the results from those by jury test.
