  • Low-velocity impact responses of composite laminates are investigated using the finite element method based on various theories. In two-dimensional nonlinear analysis, a displacement field considering higher order shear deformation and large deflection of the laminate is assumed and a finite element formulation is developed using a C$^{o}$-continuous 9-node plate element. Also, three-dimensional linear analysis based on the infinitesimal strain-displacement assumptions is performed using 8-node brick elements with incompatible modes. A modified Hertzian contact law is incorporated into the finite element program to evaluate the impact force. In the time integration, the Newmark constant acceleration algorithm is used in conjuction with successive iterations within each time step. Numerical results from static analysis as well as the impact response analysis are presented including impact force histories, deflections, strains in the laminate. Impact responses according to two typical low-velocity impact conditions are compared each other.

  • Structural failure due to seismic pounding between two adjacent buildings is one of the major concerns in the context of structural damage. Pounding between adjacent structures is a commonly observed phenomenon during major earthquakes. When modelling the structural response, stiffness of impact spring elements is considered to be one of the most important parameters when the impact force during collision of adjacent buildings is calculated. Determining valid and realistic stiffness values is essential in numerical simulations of pounding forces between adjacent buildings in order to achieve reasonable results. Several impact model stiffness values have been presented by various researchers to simulate pounding forces between adjacent structures. These values were mathematically calculated or estimated. In this study, a linear spring impact element model is used to simulate the pounding forces between two adjacent structures. An experimental model reported in literature was adopted to investigate the effect of different impact element stiffness k on the force intensity and number of impacts simulated by Finite Element (FE) analysis. Several numerical analyses have been conducted using SAP2000 and the collected results were used for further mathematical evaluations. The results of this study concluded the major factors that may actualise the stiffness value for impact element models. The number of impacts and the maximum impact force were found to be the core concept for finding the optimal range of stiffness values. For the experimental model investigated, the range of optimal stiffness values has also been presented and discussed.

  • An infinite element for impact problem has been developed using ABAQUS/Standard UEL. 4-node plane strain element was considered, and the constitutive equation was derived from properties of propagation plane body waves. The element acts as unbounded domain to the plane waves generated by impact. The numerical method was tested for the simulation of plate impact. The results show the effectiveness of the infinite element.

  • We performed a shot peening test and used a 2-D finite element model which predicts the compressive residual stress distribution below the material's surface. In this study, the concept of 'impact cycle' is introduced to account for the irregularity in the shot's impact position during testing. The impact cycle was imbedded in the finite element model. In the shot peening test, shot bombarded a type-A Almen strip surface with different impact velocities. To verify the proposed finite element model, we compared the deformed cross sectional shape of the Almen strips with the shapes computed by the proposed finite element model. Good agreement was noted between measurements and the finite element model predictions. With the verified finite element model, a series of finite element simulations was conducted to compute the residual stress distribution below the material's surface and the characteristics of these distributions are discussed.

  • Finite element method and Taguchi method were used to reduce the floor impact vibration of the reinforced concrete slab in the apartment buildings. At first, experimental results show that sound peak components to influence the rating of floor impact sound insulation were coincident with natural frequencies of the reinforced concrete slab, and there is a high linear relation between floor impact vibration and sound. The tables of orthogonal arrays were used for finite element analysis with 5 factors related to slab shape parameters and its results were analyzed by statistical method. The most effective factor to reduce the floor impact vibration was the length of living/kitchen room and the floor impact vibration was predicted by 30% reduction in the acceleration peak by the optimal design values of the factors.

  • The impact response of the human brain has been determined by three-dimensional finite element modeling. The model includes a layered shell closely representing the cranial bones with the interior contents occupied by an incompressible contimuum to simulate the brain. Flax and tentorium modeled with 4 node membrane element were also incorporated. The computed pressure-time histories at 4 locations within the brain element compared quite favorably with previously published experimental data from cadaver experiments. A parametric study was subsequently conducted to identify the model response when the impact were varied.

  • The impact behaviour and the impact-induced damage in laminated composite cylindrical shell subjected to transverse impact by a foreign object are studied using three-dimensional non-linear transient dynamic finite element formulation. A layered version of 20 noded hexahedral element incorporating geometrical non-linearity is developed based on total Langragian approach. Non-linear system of equations resulting from non-linear strain displacement relation and non-linear contact loading are solved using Newton-Raphson incremental-iterative method. Some example problems of graphite/epoxy cylindrical shell panels are considered with variation of impactor and laminate parameters and influence of geometrical non-linear effect on the impact response and the resulting damage is investigated.

  • Ultra-high performance fiber reinforced concrete (UHPFRC) is a composite building material with high ductility, fatigue resistance, fracture toughness, durability, and energy absorption capacity. The aim of this study is to develop a nonlinear finite element model that can simulate the response of the UHPFRC beam exposed to impact loads. A nonlinear finite element model was developed in ABAQUS to simulate the real response of UHPFRC beams. The numerical results showed that the model was highly successful to capture the experimental results of selected beams from the literature. A parametric study was carried out to investigate the effects of reinforcement ratio and impact velocity on the response of the UHPFRC beam in terms of midpoint displacement, impact load value, and residual load-carrying capacity. In the parametric study, the nonlinear analysis was performed in two steps for 12 different finite element models. In the first step, dynamic analysis was performed to monitor the response of the UHPFRC beam under impact loads. In the second step, static analysis was conducted to determine the residual load-carrying capacity of the beams. The parametric study has shown that the reinforcement ratio and the impact velocity affect maximum and residual displacement value substantially.

  • This paper presents finite element impact analysis for the design of Structurally Dissipating Rock-shed (SDR), an innovative design of reinforced concrete rock-shed. By using an appropriate finite element impact algorithm, the SDR structure is modelled in a simplified but efficient way. The numerical results are firstly verified through comparisons with the results of the experiments recently realized by ESIGEC and TONELLO I.C. It is shown that, using this impact algorithm, it is possible to correctly predict the SDR structural behaviour under different rock-fall impact conditions. Moreover, the numerical results show that the slab centre is the critical impact location for reinforced concrete slab design. The impact analyses have thus been focused on the impacts at the slab centre for the SDR structural optimization. Several series of parametric studies have been carried out with respect to load cases and engineering parameters choices. These numerical results support the robustness of the new SDR concept, and serve to optimize SDR structure and improve its conventional engineering design, especially for ensuring the slab punching shear resistance.
