A Suggestion for Data Assimilation Method of Hydrometeor Types Estimated from the Polarimetric Radar Observation

  • It is important for 0-6 hour nowcasting to provide for a high-quality initial condition in a meso-scale atmospheric model by a data assimilation of several observation data. The polarimetric radar data is expected to be assimilated into the forecast model, because the radar has a possibility of measurements of the types, the shapes, and the size distributions of hydrometeors. In this paper, an impact on rainfall prediction of the data assimilation of hydrometeor types (i.e. raindrop, graupel, snowflake, etc.) is evaluated. The observed information of hydrometeor types is estimated using the fuzzy logic algorism. As an implementation, the cloud-resolving nonhydrostatic atmospheric model, CReSS, which has detail microphysical processes, is employed as a forecast model. The local ensemble transform Kalman filter, LETKF, is used as a data assimilation method, which uses an ensemble of short-term forecasts to estimate the flowdependent background error covariance required in data assimilation. A heavy rainfall event occurred in Okinawa in 2008 is chosen as an application. As a result, the rainfall prediction accuracy in the assimilation case of both hydrometeor types and the Doppler velocity and the radar echo is improved by a comparison of the no assimilation case. The effects on rainfall prediction of the assimilation of hydrometeor types appear in longer prediction lead time compared with the effects of the assimilation of radar echo only.

Devel opment of Weld Strength Analysis for Dessimilar Metal Friction Welds by Ultrasonic Technique (초음파법에 의한 이종재료 마찰용접강도 해소법의 개발)

  • Friction welding has been shown to have significant economic and technical advantages. However, one of the major concerns in using friction welding is the reliability of the weld quality. No reliable nondestructive test method is available at present for detecting weld quality, particularly in a production environment. Friction welds are formed by the mechanisms of diffusion as well as mechanical interlocking. The severe plastic flow at the interface by forge action of the process brings the subsurfaces so close together that detection of any unbonded area becomes very difficult. This paper presents an attempt to determine the friction weld strength quantitatively using the ultrasonic pulse-echo method. Instead of detecting flaws or cracks at the interface, the new approach calculates the coefficient of reflection based on measured amplitudes of the echoes. It has been finally confirmed that this coefficient could provide the quantitative relationship to the weld quality such as tensile strength, torsional strength, impact value, hardness, etc. So a new nondestructive analysis system of friction weld strength of dissimilar metals using an ultrasonic technique could be well developed.

The Impact of Climate Change on Sub-daily Extreme Rainfall of Han River Basin (기후변화가 한강 유역의 시단위 확률강우량에 미치는 영향)

  • Recent researches show that climate change has impact on the rainfall process at different temporal and spatial scales. The present paper is focused on climate change impact on sub-daily rainfall quantile of Han River basin in South Korea. Climate change simulation outputs from ECHO-G GCM under the A2 scenario were used to estimate daily extreme rainfall. Sub-daily extreme rainfall was estimated using the scale invariance concept. In order to assess sub-daily extreme rainfall from climate change simulation outputs, precipitation time series were generated based on NSRPM (Neyman-Scott Rectangular Pulse Model) and modified using the ratio of rainfall over projection periods to historical one. Sub-daily extreme rainfall was then estimated from those series. It was found that sub-daily extreme rainfall in the future displayed increasing or decreasing trends for estimation methods and different periods.

Experimental study on structural integrity assessment of utility tunnels using coupled pulse-impact echo method (결합된 초음파-충격 반향 기법 기반의 일반 지하구 구조체의 건전도 평가에 관한 실험적 연구)

  • The need for safety management has arisen due to the increasing number of years of operated underground structures, such as tunnels and utility tunnels, and accidents caused by those aging infrastructures. However, in the case of privately managed underground utility ducts, there is a lack of detailed guidelines for facility safety and maintenance, resulting in inadequate safety management. Furthermore, the absence of basic design information and the limited space for safety assessments make applying currently used non-destructive testing methods challenging. Therefore, this study suggests non-destructive inspection methods using ultrasonic and impact-echo techniques to assess the quality of underground structures. Thickness, presence of rebars, depth of rebars, and the presence and depth of internal defects are assessed to provide fundamental data for the safety assessment of box-type general underground structures. To validate the proposed methodology, different conditions of concrete specimens are designed and cured to simulate actual field conditions. Applying ultrasonic and impact signals and collecting data through multi-channel accelerometers determine the thickness of the simulated specimens, the depth of embedded rebar, and the extent of defects. The predicted results are well agreed upon compared with actual measurements. The proposed methodology is expected to contribute to developing safety diagnostic methods applicable to general underground structures in practical field conditions.

One-Sided Nondestructive Evaluation of CFRP Composites By Using Ultrasonic Sound (초음파를 이용한 CFRP 복합재의 일방향 비파괴 평가)

  • It is well known that stiffness of composites depends on layup sequence of CFRP(carbon fiber reinforced plastics) laminates because the layup of composite laminates influences their properties. Ultrasonic NDE of composite laminates is often based on the backwall echoes of the sample. A pair of such transducers was mounted in a holder in a nose-to-nose fashion to be used as a scanning probe on composites. Miniature potted angle beam transducers were used (Rayleigh waves in steel) on solid laminates of composites. Experiments were performed to understand the behavior of the transducers and the nature of the waves generated in the composite (mode, wave speed, angle of refraction). C-scan images of flaws and impact damage were then produced by combining the pitch-catch probe with a portable manual scanner known as the Generic Scanner ("GenScan"). The pitch-catch signal was found to be more sensitive than normal incidence backwall echo of longitudinal wave to fiber orientation of the CFRP composites, including low level porosity, ply waviness, and cracks. Therefore, it is found that the experimentally Rayleigh wave variation of pitch-catch ultrasonic signal was consistent with numerical results and one-side ultrasonic measurement might be very useful to detect the defects.

Material property evaluation of high strength concrete using conventional and nondestructive testing method (재래 및 비파괴검사를 이용한 고강도 콘크리트의 재료특성에 관한 연구)

  • This study is to characterize the material property of early age high performance concrete emphasizing compressive strength using nondestructive testing methods. Three high performance concrete slabs of 600, 850 and 1100kg/$cm^{2}$ compressive strengths were prepared together with cylinders from same batches. Cylinder tests were peformed at the ages of 7, 14, 21 and 28 days after pouring. Using the impact echo method, the compression wave velocities were obtained based on different high performance concrete ages and compressive strengths. The equation to obtain the compressive strengths of high performance concrete has been developed using the obtained compression wave velocities. Using the SASW (spectral analysis of surface wave) method, the equation have also been developed to obtain the compressive strengths of high performance concrete based on the surface wave velocities.

  • 온실가스 증가로 인한 기후변화를 이해하고 전망함과 동시에, 다양한 영향평가 분야에 적합한 기후정보를 제공하기 위해서는 온실가스 증가 시나리오에 근거한 신뢰성 있는 기후변화 장기 시나리오가 필수적이다. 미래 기후변화에 따른 영향평가 연구의 신뢰도는 영향평가모델의 주요 입력자료로 사용되는 기후정보의 신뢰도가 가장 근본적인 문제라고 할 수 있다. 본 연구에서는 국제이론물리센터(International Center for Theoretical Physics, ICTP)에서 개발한 가장 최신의 지역기후모델인 RegCM3(Regional Climate Model Ver.3)을 도입하여 한반도에서의 상세 기후변화 시나리오를 생산할 수 있는 이중둥지격자시스템(double-nested system)을 구축하였다. 이를 이용하여 IPCC 권장배출 시나리오인 SRES(Special Report on Emission Scenarios) B2 시나리오에 근거한 ECHO-G(독일 MPI의 기후모델) 결과를 과거 30년(1971-2000)과 미래 30년(2021-2050)에 대하여 상세화하였다. 과거 시나리오의 검증을 통하여 다양한 시.공간 규모에 대한 불확실성을 평가하고, 이에 대한 신뢰도를 기반으로 미래 기후변화를 전망하였다.

  • Delamination of cover concrete due to re-bar corrosion is a critical damage reducing structural safety of reinforced concrete structures. Therefore, it should be detected and evaluated to provide appropriate maintenance to recover structural integrity. Impact-echo method, which utilizes thickness vibration characteristics of delaminated concrete section, is effective for detection and evaluation of small areal size delamination. However, it may not be applicable for large areal size delamination in which flexural vibration modes are dominated. In this study, applicability of vibration mode shapes of delaminated concrete section is investigated for visualization of delamination region in concrete structures. Numerical and experimental modal tests are performed to estimate mode shapes of delaminated concrete section and linear absolute summation technique is proposed for effective visualization of delamination region based on estimated mode shapes.

Guided wave analysis of air-coupled impact-echo in concrete slab investigation on the use of waste tyre crumb rubber in concrete paving blocks

  • This paper investigates the utilization of waste tyre crumb rubber as the fine aggregate in precast concrete Paving block (PCPB). PCPB's are generally preferred for city roads, pedestrian crosswalk, parking lots and bus terminals. The main aim of this paper is to evaluate the mechanical properties of wet cast PCPB containing waste tyre crumb rubber. The mechanical properties were investigated using a density, compressive strength, split tensile strength and flexural strength tests at 7, 28 56 days according to the IS 15688:2006 and EN1338. The wet cast method was followed for producing PCPB samples. The fine aggregate (river sand) was replaced with waste tyre crumb in percentage of 5%, 10%, 15%, 20% and 25% by volume. All the test results were compared with the conventional PCPB (Without rubber). The test results indicate its feasibility for incorporating waste tyre crumb rubber in the production of PCPB by the wet cast method.

  • 배수식 방수방식으로 지하 30m에 건설된 NATM터널 통신구를 준공 7년후 완전방수식 방식으로 변경하였다. 터널 라이닝에 30m의 수압을 작용할 경우 발생하는 단면력을 구조검토하고 배근상태가 안전한가 분석하였다. 또한 라이닝의 시공단면을 확인하기 위하여 충격반향기법(Impact-Echo Method)탐사와 GPR탐사, 배근상태를 파악하기 위하여 철근탐지기를 사용하였다. 그 결과 30m 수압에 안전할 것이라는 판단하에 배면주입 방수공법을 적용 통신구를 완전방수 하였다. 그리고 배수식 통신구를 운용하는 비용과 완전방수공사비를 분석한 결과 배출되는 지하수량이 많은 경우 완전방수시공이 경제성이 있다고 분석되었다.
