Impact resistance efficiency of the newly designed sandwich beam with a laterally arched core as bio-inspired by the woodpecker is numerically investigated. The principal components of the beam comprise a dual-core system sandwiched by the top and bottom laminated CFRP skins. Different materials, including hot melt adhesive, high-density polyethylene (HDPE), acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS), epoxy resin (EPON862), aluminum (Al6061), and mild carbon steel (AISI1018), are considered for the side-arched core layer of the beam for impact efficiency assessment. The aluminum honeycomb takes the role of the second core. Contact force, stress, damage formation, and impact energy for beams equipped with different materials are examined. A diversity in performance superiority is noticed in each of these indicators for different core materials. Therefore, for overall performance appraisal, the impact resistance efficiency index, which covers several chief impact performance parameters, of each sandwich beam is computed and compared. The impact resistance efficiency index of the structure equipped with the AISI1018 core is found to be the highest, about 3-10 times greater than other specimens, thus demonstrating its efficacy as the optimal material for the bio-inspired dual-core sandwich beam system.
Fracture of brittle material due to dynamic load such a particle impact has been reported by many researchers as the fracture behavior by variation of stress for a short minute. Especially, the brittle material, such a ceramic, applied to the structural component of machine, is considered as the important project. In order to evaluate the improvement of impact resistance, the particle impact test for the $Al_2O_3-TiO_2$ coated glass is practiced. And then, the damage variation according to the impact energy of steel ball was evaluated. There was a large improvement by the ceramic coating on the surface of a glass substrate. The damage volume was especially imported to evaluate damage behavior in quantity. These data were plotted on logarithmic coordinate and experimental equations were induced by data analysis based on test results. And the variation of critical energy for crack initiation was analyzed with critical impact energy when each crack occurs.
Composite materials have a higher specific strength and modulus than traditional metallic materials. Additionally, these materials offer new design flexibilities, corrosion and wear resistance, low thermal conductivity and increased fatigue life. These, however, are susceptible to impact damage due to their lack of through-thickness reinforcement and it causes large drops in the load-carrying capacity of a structure. Therefore, the impact damage behavior and subsequently load-carrying capacity of impacted composite materials deserve careful investigation. In this study, the residual strength and impact characteristics of plain-woven CFRP composites with impact damage are investigated under axial tensile test. Impact test was performed using drop weight impact tester. And residual strength behavior by impact was evaluated using the caprino model. Also we evaluated behavior of residual strength by change of mass and size of impactor. Examined change of residual strength by impact energy change through this research and consider impactor diameter in caprino model.
In this paper, a study on low-velocity impact response of four different sandwich panels for the hybrid bodyshell and floor structure application of the Korean low floor bus vehicle was done. Square samples of 100mm sides were subjected low-velocity impact loading using an instrumented testing machine at six energy levels. Impact parameters like maximum force, time to maximum force, deflection at maximum force and absorbed energy were evaluated and compared for four different types of sandwich panels. The impact damage size and depth of the permanent indentation were measured by 3-Dimensional Scanner. Failure modes were studied by sectioning the specimens and observed under optical microscope. The impact test results show that sandwich panel with composite laminate facesheet could not observe damage mode of a permanent visible indentation after impact and has a good impact damage resistance in comparison with sandwich panel with metal aluminum facesheet.
In order to investigate the dynamic impact resistance of steel fiber reinforced full light-weight concretes, we implemented drop weight impact test on a total of 6 reinforced beams with 0, 1 and 2%, steel fiber volume fraction. The purpose of this test was to determine the failure modes of beams under different impact energies. Then, we compared and analyzed the time-history curves of impact force, midspan displacement and reinforcement strain. The obtained results indicated that the deformations of samples and their steel fibers were proportional to impact energy, impact force, and impact time. Within reasonable ranges of parameter values, the effects of impact size and impact time were similar for all volumetric contents of steel fibers, but they significantly affected the crack propagation mechanism and damage characteristics of samples. Increase of the volumetric contents of steel fibers not only effectively reduced the midspan displacement and reinforcement strain of concrete samples, but also inhibited crack initiation and propagation such that cracks were concentrated in the midspan areas of beams and the frequency of cracks at supports was reduced. As a result, the tensile strength and impact resistance of full light-weight concrete beams were significantly improved.

The fiber reinforced laminated composite structures are very susceptible to be damaged when they are impacted by foreign objects. To increase the impact resistance of the laminated composite structures, shape memory alloy(SMA) thin film is embedded in the structure. For the numerical impact analysis of SMA hybrid composite structures, SMA modeling tool is developed to consider pseudoelastic effect of SMAs. Moreover, the damage analysis is considered using failure criteria and a simple damage model for reasonable impact analysis. The numerical results are verified with the experimental ones. Impact analyses for composite plate with pre-strained SMAs are numerically performed and the damage areas are investigated.
In order to improve the damage tolerance of the conventional laminated composites, threedimensional fiber structures incorporated with stitching yams have been utilized in this study. From the newly developed process termed as TAPIS(TApe Placement Incorporated with Stitching), carbon/epoxy composites have been fabricated. Two-dimensional composites with the same stacking sequence as 3D counterparts have also been fabricated for the property comparison. To examine the damage resistance performance the low speed drop weight impact test has been adopted. For the assessment of damage after the impact loading, specimens were subjected to C-scan nondestructive inspection compression after impact(CAI) were also conducted to evaluate residual compressive strength. Although the damage area of 3D composites was greatly reduced$(30-40\%)$ compared with that of 2D composites, the CAI strength did not show drastic improvement.
For the damage tolerance improvement of conventional laminated composites, stitching process has been utilized for providing through-thickness reinforcements. 2D prefonl1S were stacked with S-2 glass plain weave, and 3D preforms were fabricated using the stitching process. For the matrix system, epoxy and phenol resins were considered. To examine the damage resistance performance the low velocity drop weight impact test has been carried out, and the impact damage was examined by scanning image. CAI (Compressive After Ih1paet) tests were also conducted to evaluate residual compressive strength. Compared with 2D epoxy composites, 2D phenol composites showed drastic reduction in the compressive strength prior to impact because of the higher contents of voids. The damage area of 2D phenol composites were also larger than that of 2D epoxy composites. However, by introducing the stitching, the damage area of 3D phenol composites was reduced by 60%, while the CAI strength improvement was negligible.
Recently, carbon fiber reinforced plastic(CFRP) composite materials have been widely used in various fields of engineering because of its advanced properties. Also, CFRP composite materials offer new design flexibilities, corrosion and wear resistance, low thermal conductivity and increased fatigue life. However CFRP composite materials are susceptible to impact damage due to their lack of through-thickness reinforcement and it causes large drops in the load-carrying capacity of a structure. Therefore, the impact damage behavior and subsequently load-carrying capacity of impacted composite materials deserve careful investigation. In this study, the residual strength and impact characteristics of plain-woven CFRP composites with impact damage are investigated under axial tensile test. By using obtained residual strength and Tan-Cheng failure criterion, residual strength of CFRP laminate with arbitrary fiber angle were evaluated.
This study evaluates the local damage of a turbine in an auxiliary building of a nuclear power plant due to an external impact by using the LS-DYNA finite element program. The wall of the auxiliary building is SC structure and the material of the SC wall plate is high manganese steel, which has superior ductility and energy absorbance compared to the ordinary steel used for other SC wall plates. The effects of the material of the wall, collision speed, and angle on the magnitude of the local damage were evaluated by local collision analysis. The analysis revealed that the SC wall made of manganese steel had significantly less damage than the SC wall made of ordinary steel. In conclusion, an SC wall made of manganese steel can have higher effective resistance than an SC wall made of ordinary steel against the local collision of an airplane engine or against a turbine impact.
