Herein, two experiments were performed to determine the appropriate pH range and immersion time for organic acid-activating treatment (OAT) in a Pyropia farm. The effects of pH (0.50, 0.75, 1.00, 1.25, 1.50, 1.75, and 2.00) on the cell mortality of Pyropia yezoensis and Ulva linza thalli were tested after 20 sec of immersion under OAT. In addition, the cell mortality of the two species was estimated under various combinations of immersion time (30, 60, and 120 sec) and pH (1.00, 1.50, and 2.00). Upon 20 sec of immersion under OAT conditions, the cell mortality of P. yezoensis did not differ at any pH but that of U. linza exceeded 90% at a pH range of 0.50-1.00. P. yezoensis showed little cell mortality upon 30 sec of immersion, but its mortality exceeded 55% upon 120 sec of immersion at a pH range of 1.00-1.50. U. linza showed 67.9-100% mortality at a pH of 1.50 and 100% mortality at a pH of 1.00, regardless of the immersion time (30-120 sec). These results indicate that for the effective removal of U. linza, the optimal pH range is 1.00-1.50 and the optimal immersion time is 20-30 sec.
The importance of magnesium alloys has significantly increased due to their low density, high strength/weight ratio, very good electromagnetic shielding features and good recyclability. However, unfortunately, Mg alloys are very susceptible to corrosion due to their high chemically activities (= -2.356 V vs. NHE at $25^{\circ}C$), hence, most commercial Mg alloys require corrosion protective coatings. Organic coating such as painting, powder coating and electrophoretic deposition of paint (E-paint) is typically used in the final stages of the coating process of Mg alloys. In this study, effect of pre-immersion time on the deposition of E-paint on AZ31 Mg alloy was investigated. It was found that during pre-immersion time, AZ31 Mg alloy rapidly reacts with E-paint solution and paint can be self-deposited on the AZ31 surface without applying of electric current. The pore size on the E-painted AZ31 Mg alloy increased with increasing pre-immersion time from 0 to 5 min. Both adhesion and corrosion resistance of E-painted AZ31 Mg alloy decreased with increasing pre-immersion time. The best E-paint AZ31 Mg alloy, which showed stronger adhesion after water immersion test and good corrosion resistance, was started to deposit after 5 s of pre-immersion time.
Head-out water immersion induces marked increase in the cardiac stroke volume. The present study was undertaken to characterize the stroke volume change by analyzing the aortic blood flow and left ventricular systolic time intervals. Ten men rested on a siting position in the air and in the water at $34.5^{circ}C$ for 30 min each. Their stroke volume, heart rate, ventricular systolic time intervals, and aortic blood flow indices were assessed by impedance cardiography. During immersion, the stroke volume increased 56%, with a slight (4%) decrease in heart rate, thus cardiac output increased ${\sim}50%.$ The slight increase in R-R interval was due to an equivalent increase in the systolic and diastolic time intervals. The ventricular ejection time was 20% increased, and this was mainly due to a decrease in pre-ejection period (28%). The mean arterial pressure increased 5 mmHg, indicating that the cardiac afterload was slightly elevated by immersion. The left ventricular end-diastolic volume index increased 24%, indicating that the cardiac preload was markedly elevated during immersion. The mean velocity and the indices of peak velocity and peak acceleration of aortic blood flow were all increased by ${\sim}30%,$ indicating that the left ventricular contractile force was enhanced by immersion. These results suggest that the increase in stroke volume during immersion is characterized by an increase in ventricular ejection time and aortic blood flow velocity, which may be primarily attributed to the increased cardiac preload and the muscle length-dependent increase in myocardial contractile force.
In this article, we study ruled surfaces in a Lorentzian space-time, which have finite type immersion. We give a condition for bi-finite type surfaces to be of finite type.
This study was conducted to compare the hunting reaction of finger in the cold water. Finger skin temperature is measured the left middle finger tip immersion in cold water of 5℃ for 30 minutes and measurements were made on finger skin temperature(Ts), thermal comfort, and cold pain sensations during the experiment at the spring (March) and Winter(December). Results were follows. Is before immersion was at the highest in spring and at the lowest in winter and was closely related to the indoor temperature Ts during immersion and recovery. Mean of finger skin temperature(MST), the skin temperature at the first rise(TTR) and amplitude of finger skin temperature reaction during immersion(AT) were significant higher in spring than that in winter(P<.01). The lowest skin temperature(LST) during the cold water immersion were significantly higher in spring than that in winter (P<.05). The frequency of the appearance of cold-Induced vase dilation(CIVD) was higher in spring than that in winter. However, time for the first temperature(TTR) and recovery time(RT) had no seasonal variation. In addition, cold pains during immersion were felt more strongly in spring than in winter. Local thermal sensation, finger thermal sensation in dynamic state during hand immersion was different from that in the Winter. Spring was slowly cold in cold water immersion.
This study was carried out to determine the effect of osmotic dehydration as pretreatment on the qualities of dried cherry-tomatoes. The weight reduction and solid gain in osmosed cherry-tomato were increased by increasing sugar concentration, immersion temperature and time; among three parameters, the immersion temperature affected more than sugar concentration and immersion time did. The moisture content was decreased as increasing sugar concentration, immersion temperature and time, and it was the lowest at the osmotic conditions of 7$0^{\circ}C$, 60$^{\circ}$Brix and 11hr. To determine the optimum processing condition by RSm, the polynomial optimum models were established. The regression models was significant (p<0.05). It was used contour plots to optimize osmotic dehydration. The optimum condition for osmotic dehydration as pretreatments for drying of cherry-tomatoes were immersion temperature of 47~53$^{\circ}C$, sugar concentration of 39~43$^{\circ}$Brix, and immersion time of 7hr, in which process conditions were 78~86% moisture content, 8.5~10$^{\circ}$Brix sugar content and 80~86% weight reduction.
This study has been investigated on the durability of carbon fiber/epoxy composites (CFRP) in moisture environment. The carbon fiber/epoxy composites were modified to use the nanoparticles such as carbon nanotubes and titanium oxide. These hybrid composites were exposed to moisture environment for a certain period of time. Weight gain according to immersion time, quasi-static tensile test and micro-graphic characterization were investigated on the samples exposed to moisture environment. Consequently, the weight gains increased with increasing immersion time and weight gain of the hybrid composites was lower than the one of CFRP through the whole immersion time. The tensile strengths decreased with increasing immersion time and tensile strengths of the hybrid composites were higher than the one of CFRP through the whole immersion time. The CFRP were observed more degraded than hybrid compositess in moisture environment. Therefore, it was concluded that the addition of nanoparticles in CFRP could lead to improve the durability in moisture environment.
This study was conducted to investigate the durability of carbon fiber/epoxy composites (CFRP) in a saline water environment. The carbon fiber/epoxy composites were modified to use nanoparticles such as carbon nanotubes and titanum oxide. These hybrid composites were exposed to a saline water environment for a certain period. The weight gain according to the immersion time, a quasi-static tensile test, and micro-graphic characterization were used to investigate the samples exposed to the saline water environment. The weight gains increased with increasing immersion time. The weight gains of the hybrid composites were lower than that for pure CFRP throughout the entire immersion time. The tensile strengths decreased with increasing immersion time. The tensile strengths of the hybrid composites were higher than that of the pure CFRP throughout the entire immersion time. The pure CFRP was observed to be more degraded than the hybrid composites in the saline water environment. Therefore, it was concluded that the addition of nanoparticles to CFRP could lead to improved durability in a saline water environment.
The effects of salt concentration immersion time in a salt solution prior to air dehydration and heating of air temperature during dehydration upon the browning reaction and pyruvic acid content of air dried garlics to a 6.5% moisture content(wet basis) were analyzed by a response surface methodology(RSM), Those values were also predicted by using a second degree polynomial regression model. Heating of air temperature was the most significant factor affecting the both browning reaction and pyruvic acid content. Salt concentration had more influence to browning reaction than immersion time whereas immersion time was more impor-tant factor than salt concentration on a retention of pyruvic acid sugested different processing conditions. While the processing conditions to minimize the browning reaction(O.D=0.009) were 0.3% of salt solution 9 min of immersion time and 5$0^{\circ}C$ of air temperature compared to control(O.D=0.022) of air dehydration at 5$0^{\circ}C$ Pyruvic acid contents were maximized(174 $\mu$mole/g garlic solid) at the 0.1% of salt solution 3 min of immersion time and 5$0^{\circ}C$ of air temperature compared to control(147 $\mu$mole/g garlic solid) of air dehydration at 5$0^{\circ}C$
Thawing is very important in tuna canning because it affects the yield and quality of the canned tuna, and productivity. The effects of vacuum thawing on the quality, yield, and thawing times of frozen skipjack were compared with conventional water immersion thawing. The time required to thaw frozen skipjack tuna (weight 2.5-3.0 kg) from $-10^{\circ}C$ to $-2^{\circ}C$ was 75, 60, and 37 min at a pressure of 17, 23, and 31 mmHg, respectively, corresponding to temperatures of 20, 25, and $30^{\circ}C$. The thawing time decreased with increasing pressure. Vacuum thawing shorten the thawing time by 58-80% compared with water immersion thawing at $20^{\circ}C$, and there was less difference between the core and skin temperatures than with water immersion thawing. No significant change in pH or histamine was observed according to thawing method, while the volatile basic nitrogen (VBN), trimethylamine (TMA), and K value were lower with vacuum thawing than water immersion thawing. Based on these results, we believe that vacuum thawing minimizes the biochemical and microbial changes that occur while thawing frozen skipjack tuna.
