  • Objective: To evaluate the bioactivity, and the biomechanical and bone-regenerative properties of Ti6Al4V miniscrews subjected to anodization, cyclic precalcification, and heat treatment (APH treatment) and their potential clinical use. Methods: The surfaces of Ti6Al4V alloys were modified by APH treatment. Bioactivity was assessed after immersion in simulated body fluid for 3 days. The hydrophilicity and the roughness of APH-treated surfaces were compared with those of untreated (UT) and anodized and heat-treated (AH) samples. For in vivo tests, 32 miniscrews (16 UT and 16 APH) were inserted into 16 Wistar rats, one UT and one APH-treated miniscrew in either tibia. The miniscrews were extracted after 3 and 6 weeks and their osseointegration (n = 8 for each time point and group) was investigated by surface and histological analyses and removal torque measurements. Results: APH treatment formed a dense surface array of nanotubular TiO2 layer covered with a compact apatite-like film. APH-treated samples showed better bioactivity and biocompatibility compared with UT and AH samples. In vivo, APH-treated miniscrews showed higher removal torque and bone-to-implant contact than did UT miniscrews, after both 3 and 6 weeks (p < 0.05). Also, early deposition of densely mineralized bone around APH-treated miniscrews was observed, implying good bonding to the treated surface. Conclusions: APH treatment enhanced the bioactivity, and the biomechanical and bone regenerative properties of the Ti6Al4V alloy miniscrews. The enhanced initial stability afforded should be valuable in orthodontic applications.

  • Even though the tarnishing and corrosion problems characteristic with dental silver-palladium alloy are not yet fully solved, it is recently widely used because of its low cost. However the effects of major alloying elements on the various properties of this system are not fully understood. The object of this research is to clarify the effects of In and Zn additives on the corrosion and tarnishing resistances and precipitation hardening behavior of this sytem, using electrodynamic polarization, immersion, and Vicker's microhardness test and X-ray diffraction and electron probe micro analysis methods. The obtained results were as follows: I. As indium content is increased, both the corrosion resistance in Cl-solution and microhardness are also increased while the tarnishing resistance is decreased. 2. As Zinc content is increased, the corrosion resistance is decreased, but tarnishing resistance is increased 3. At 70Ag-25Pd-2.5Zn-2.5In composition, the precipitation harding behavior was mot significant. The optimum aging temperature was $450^{\circ}C$ and the time was 2 hrs. The resulting specimen of this work carried 180VHN. 4. Under the heat treatment, the changes in the mechanical property are due to the changes in the shape and composition of dendrite matrix, namely, it is because of the precipitation hardening behavior which has been proved by electron probe micro analysis and optical microscopic finding.

  • A microbiological quality evaluation on cooked food, food materials and cooking equipment was conducted in 14 school food services in Changwon area, South Korea for Ojingeochaesomoochim (vegetable salad with blanched squid) which went through cooking process after heating treatment. Only 5 schools out of the 14 (35.7%) observed the sanitization criteria of the Korean School Meals Sanitization Management for raw vegetables (concentration of chlorine solution: 100ppm, immersion time of sanitizing: 5 min). The acceptance rates regarding the microbial standards for Korean school meals showed improvement before and after of sanitization: for onions 57.1% vs 71.4%; cucumber 42.9% vs. 78.6%. However, garlic showed adverse sanitizing effect as the acceptance rate went down from 42.9% to 35.7%. Blanched squid and red pepper paste was acceptable in all 14 schools (100%), while squid seasoned with red pepper powder was acceptable in only 42.9% of the schools. Microbial results for knives, cutting boards, mixing bowls were satisfactory, however 35.7% of sanitary gloves that were put on right before the seasoning showed poor sanitization, and this indicated high probability of cross-contamination from the gloves. We calculated that 57.1% of the cooked foods were in accordance with the microbial standards for Korean school meals. Therefore, it is strongly recommended to have verification process, especially on the effectiveness of sanitization of raw vegetables, in cooking foods through cooking process after heating treatment in HACCP system of school food service.

  • Conventional ultrasonic examination to detect micro and small surface cracks is based on the pulse-echo technique using a normal immersion focused transducer with high frequency, or an angle-beam transducer generating surface waves. It is difficult to make an automatic ultrasonic system that can detect micro and small surface cracks and position in a large structure like steel and ceramic rolls, because of the huge data of inspection and the ambiguous position data of the transducer. In this study, a high-precision scanning acoustic microscope with a 10MHz large-aperture transducer has been used to assess the existence, position and depth of a surface crack from the real-time A, B, C scans obtained by exploiting the ultrasonic diffraction. The ultrasonic method with large aperture transducer has improved the accuracy of the crack depth assessment and also the scanning speed by ten times, compared with the conventional ultrasonic methods.

  • The use of physics based deformation methods is continuously increasing in computer graphics area such as game and simulation. Many researchers have worked on this method. However, relatively few researchers have considered the development of the user interaction to the 3D objects. This research proposes a physics-based deformation technique using AR (Augmented Reality) environments to enhance user immersion and the effectiveness of the deformation. In the AR circumstances, the physics based deformation should be accomplished in realtime. In the proposed method, we combine RBF (Radial Basis Function) [1] and LSM (Lattice Shape Matching) [2, 3] and apply it to polygonal models for real-time user interaction. The dynamics of the LSM is also calculated to trace the movement of each lattice. Finally these algorithms are implemented in AR environments.

  • Ischemia reperfusion injury occurs in various diseases. The role of oxygen free radicals in IR injury of the lung has been spotlighted and many studies have been performed. In this study, we tried to prepare a stable rat lung model for IR injury, focusing on surrounding conditions as hilar stripped left lung, clamped left pulmonary artery and bronchus, and declamped after determined period was passed, and right main pulmonary aretery was clamped. Arterial blood gas analyes were performed at 1, 10, 20, 30, minutes after reperfusion. Before clamping, PaO2 was 95 to 120 mmHg in all animals. There were six groups; Group I : temperature 15o C, and 120 minutes clamping, Group II: 20 oC, and 120 minutes clamping, Group III : 25 oC, and 120 minutes clamping, Group IV : 15oC, 90 minutes clamping, Group V : 20 oC, 90 minutes clamping,Group VI: 20 oC, 75 minutes clamping. Each groups contained 10 Sprague Dayley rats. The humidity was maintained 100 % as circulation imerged isotonic Hartmann`s solution of the pleural cavity. In group IV, V, and VI, PaO2 decreased significantly in all animals immediately after reperfusion, but 43 % survived till 10 minutes after reperfusion, it was 74.0$\pm$5.7, 73.3$\pm$10.8,and 88.2$\pm$17.7 mmHg. Pulmonary edema was observed histologically in 2/10 animals in group IV, 6/10 in group V , 3/10 in group VI, 9/10 in group I, and the other lungs showed all edema. We established a stable model by setting ischemic time, and temperature, between 75 to 90 minutes,15 to 20o C, and isotemperature Hartmann`s solution immersion of the pleural cavity.

  • The aim of this single blind intervation study was to compare the analgesic effects of transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) and interferential currents (IFC) on cold-induced pain in healthy volunteers. Sixteen subjects completed six cycles of the cold-induced pain test. During each cycle pain threshold was recorded as the time from immersion of the subject is hand in cold water to the first sensation of pain and pain intensity and unpleasantness ratings were recorded using visual analogue scales. Subjects were randomly allocated to receive each 50 Hz-TENS, 50 Hz-IFC, 100 Hz-TENS and 100 Hz-IFC. Statistical analysis showed that four interventions elevated the cold pain threshold significantly and the difference between interventions was not simply significant. But, no significant differences were identified in pain intensity and unpleasantness ratings. We conclude that there were no differences in the analgesic effects of the four interventions under the present experimental conditions. But, 50 Hz-IFC has been shown to be more comfortable than other interventions.

  • In this paper, we propose a large scale entertainment system based on gesture recognition for learning Chinese character contents. The system is consisted of parts that forecast user's posture in two infrared images and part that recognize gestures from continuous poses. And we can divide and acquire in front side pose and side pose about one pose in each IR camera. This entertainment system is immersive in nature and convenient for its gestures based controlling system. Also, it can maximize information transmission because induce immersion and interest using two large size displays and various multimedia elements. The learning Chinese character contents can master Chinese character naturally because give interest to user and supply game and education at the same time. Therefore, it can expect synergy effect that can learn playing to user combining with large entertainment system based on gesture recognition.

  • In this study, the sphericity of calcium alginate gel beads was optimized using response surface methodology. The optimum conditions for bead sphericity were a concentration of 2.24% sodium alginate, a flow rate of 0.059 mL/sec for the sodium alginate solution, and a 459 rpm rotation for the calcium chloride solution. The predicted and experimental bead sphericities under the optimum conditions were 94.5 and 96.7%, respectively, showing close agreement. We also investigated the processing condition effects for the physical properties of the optimized calcium alginate gel beads. Immersion in hot water slightly decreased bead size and rupture strength. NaCl treatment increased bead size and decreased rupture strength. While the pH of the calcium chloride solution had little effect on bead sphericity, the bead sizes and gel strengths decreased with longer times in each pH solution. The beads coated with pectin and glucomannan showed no significant changes in sphericity, but their sizes decreased with time. The coated beads showed higher rupture strengths than the uncoated beads.
