  • This study proposes a mobile Augmented Reality (AR)-based "word card" learning tool for children aged 3 to 5. First, this study suggests a learning structure to improve motivation and immersion of learning, Secondly, it designs and implements the user interface applying the proposed learning structure. Also, it designs a content management tool supporting the production of the content so that instructors can easily manage the contents for various learners. This study is conducted by four steps - reference research, design of "word card" learning content for the learner, design of content management tool for the instructor and the effectiveness verification of the proposed content. The proposed content was designed based on an education content architecture for enhancement of immersion and motivation to study. Moreover, it includes an 'AR content management tool for instructor' designed to easily update AR education content. The class for six children aged 3 to 5 was given to validate the enhancement of immersion to study. Experiment results showed that the proposed content enhanced the study immersion and that special interaction design for early children was necessary.

  • Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori)-infection is an important pathogen of stomach cancer after chronic gastritis and ulceration in the stomach and duodenum. However, the virulences of H. pylori strains have not been well-defined between clinical isolates. This study was designed to establish water-immersion-restraint stress (WIRS) model in mongolian gerbil for comparison of pathogenicity of H. pylori strains. To determine an optimal duration time for WIRS model in gerbil, 5-week-old Mongolian gerbils were divided into different groups by WIRS duration time. After graded duration of WIRS, the macroscopic ulcer index (UI) was measured with the stomach and duodenum of sacrificed animal. There were no significant differences between male and female in same duration group. However, the UI increased significantly in a time-dependent fashion. The group of 6 hours-WIRS animals showed severe hemorrhage and ulceration in their stomach and duodenum. On the other hand, the very mild lesions induced in 2 hours-treated animals. Therefore, we determined an optimal duration time for WIRS model in gerbil as 4 hours. Thereafter, we evaluated whether this WIRS model in gerbil could be used as an useful tool for in vivo comparison of pathogenicity of H. pylori strains by enhancement of pathological severity in H. pylori-infected gerbils. Mongolian gerbils were divided into H. pyloriinfected and PBS-inoculated groups. Thereafter, they were divided again into 4 hours-WIRS and no WIRS subgroups. After treatment, the severity of pathological changes was evaluated in a same manner with previous duration-determining experiment. When the animals were exposed to WIRS, the UI was significantly higher in the infected group than in the uninfected group. These results suggested that the established gerbil-WIRS model in this study enhanced effectively the severity of pathogenic changes in the H. pylori-infected Mongolian gerbils and could be used as an useful tool for in vivo comparison of pathogenicity of H. pylori strains.

  • With the development of display engineering and technology, the screen and sound quality of information devices such as TVs are improving. The screen used LEDs via LCD and PDP and a large flat panel in the early CRT to create super-high resolution. The sound is improved by directly vibrating a thin and simple panel, such as an OLED. In our previous study, the exciter speaker was attached to the rear of the OLED panel to be used as the diaphragm of the speaker, and the sound quality was as good as that of the TV using the existing dynamic speaker. This method supplied the viewer with the direct sound coming from the panel, delivering clear sound, and the sound and image came from the same location, thus giving the viewer high immersion and maximizing the effect of information transfer. OLED exciter speakers, however, have a special directivity, which tends to slightly attenuate the tone at the very center of the screen. This study improves the sound quality by improving the structure of the exciter speaker and the radiated sound of the flat panel display. A 2-in-1 Exciter is made into a single core to improve the speaker's radiation pattern.

  • A study on the enhancement of environmental durability of EPDM rubber materials for the aerator membrane was performed using a butyl rubber as a modifier. A conventional EPDM rubber formulation was evaluated as having about 26.0 wt% or more oil content from the chloroform immersion test. These oils would be gradually and continuously deleted from the aerator membrane when directly exposed to a waste-water or chemically corrosive fluids, making the membrane less flexible and the performance worse. To improve this, a butyl rubber (IIR) was utilized as the modifier for a low-ENB type of EPDM rubber formulation with low-oil content. The environmental durability of the IIR-modified EPDM rubber material was expected to be greatly enhanced compared to the conventional one. However, the mechanical and performance properties such as elongation, tensile strength, and air bubble size, etc. were still maintained as good as in the conventional one. Furthermore, TGA analysis of the IIR-modified EPDM material showed that there would be partially compatible between IIR and EPDM. It also showed that the initial degradation temperature of the IIR-modified EPDM could be somewhat increased, exhibiting the enhanced compatibility among the components and, thereby, more enhanced environmental durability.

  • The virtual reality (VR) is an immerging technology used in the serious games industry to treat psychological disorders like dementia. We created a system named as Virtual Reality Home (VRH) for the elderly who lived with Alzheimer's disease (or other form of dementia) and cognitive impairment using virtual reality technology. The purpose of our study is to measure the long-time immersion and retention of VRH on the moods and apathy, enhancement in physical and brain stimulation as well as a decision making with peoples of dementia and explore the experience of aged care home staff's member. The VRH shows a positive impact on the elderly participants and staff members. During the VRH experience, excitement and a great level of alertness were observed among the participants but few of them were feeling anxiety. Furthermore, we observed the improvement in physical, memory and brain stimulation, but the participants have a low focus on decision making because they wanted to explore all interactable objects in the VRH. This study suggests that the VR may have the potential to improve the quality of life, and these results can assist to expand the future development in the enhancement of efficiency of people with dementia.

  • Scratches are observed on a polymer cover-layer of near-field recording (NFR) media after a servo test with rotating disc. The scratches are formed by the collision of a solid immersion lens (SIL)-media. One of the possible ways to avoid the scratch problem is to coat a dielectric protective film on the polymer cover-layer which enhances the hardness of the surface. The surface with hard characteristics in the surface reduces the scratch problem in the cover-layer. Not only the mechanical properties but also the optical properties should be controlled. Specifically, the refractive index of the dielectric protective film should be matched with the polymer cover-layer not to lose light at the interface due to the difference of the refractive index. The refractive index of the dielectric film can be tailored by controlling process parameters during sputtering and matched with that of the polymer cover-layer.

  • Recently, the use of information and communication technology (ICT) has advanced activities in the field of policing, such as police training, crime investigation, and on-site response equipment enhancement. In this paper, we examine how to use immersion technology in the field of policing. Currently, AR/VR technology is mainly used for police education, training, and criminal investigation, and other cases of its use are rare. To use AR/VR technology in a wider range of applications, it is necessary to look at how it can be used in major police activities (e.g., patrol, investigation, and arrest activities).

  • Electrical Designs for Application Specific Integrated Circuits (ASIC) has undergone a change recently with the advent of the sub-wavelength lithography. The optical projection with 193 nm wavelength has been further extended with the use of immersion and other techniques. The competing trends for printing smaller design features have been discussed in this paper with the discussion of the electrical layout analysis to find unfriendly design features. The early knowledge of the unfriendly design features allows remedial actions in time for better yield on the wafer. There are existing standard design qualification criteria being used in the design and fabrication community, but they seem to be insufficient to guarantee defect free designs. This paper proposes an integrated approach for screening the layout with multiple aspects: layout geometry based, graphical analysis and process model based verification. The results have been discussed with few example design features from the 28nm design layout.

  • In this study, pyrocatechol violet (Pcv) is proposed for the first time as an efficient electrocatalyst for oxidation of sulfide and flow injection analysis (FIA) of sulfide. A graphite pencil electrode (GPE) was modified with Pcv via immersion of the GPE into 0.01 M Pcv solution for 15 min. Cyclic voltammograms (CVs) demonstrated that Pcv/GPE exhibits a good electrocatalytic performance due to shift in the potential from +400 at bare GPE to +70 mV at Pcv/GPE and obtaining an enhancement in the peak current compared with the bare GPE. A linear range between 0.25 and 250 μM sulfide with a detection limit of 0.07 μM was obtained from the recorded current-time curves in Flow Injection Analysis (FIA) of sulfide. Sulfide in water samples was also successfully determined using the proposed FI amperometric methods.
