This paper presents a new approach to translation and rotation invariant feature extraction for image texture retrieval. For the rotation invariant feature extraction, we invent angular projection along angular frequency in Polar coordinate system. The translation and rotation invariant feature vector for representing texture images is constructed by the averaged magnitude and the standard deviations of the magnitude of the Fourier transform spectrum obtained by the proposed angular projection. In order to easily implement the angular projection, the Radon transform is employed to obtain the Fourier transform spectrum of images in the Polar coordinate system. Then, angular projection is applied to extract the feature vector. We present our experimental results to show the robustness against the image rotation and the discriminatory capability for different texture images using MPEG-7 data set. Our Experiment result shows that the proposed rotation and translation invariant feature vector is effective in retrieval performance for the texture images with homogeneity, isotropy and local directionality.
In this paper, we studied the rotation angle estimation methods required for image alignment in an image recognition environment. In particular, a rotation angle estimation method applicable to a low specification embedded-based environment was proposed and compared with the existing method using complex moment. The proposed method estimates the rotation angle through similarity mathcing of the 1D projection profile along the radial axis after converting an image into polar coordinates. In addition, it is also possible to select a method of using vector sum of the projection profile, which more simplifies the calculation. Through experiments conducted on binary pattern images and gray-scale images, it was shown that the estimation error of the proposed method is not significantly different from that of complex moment-based method and requires less computation and system resources. For future expansion, a study on how to match the rotation center in gray-scale images will be needed.

This paper suggests the algorihtm which extracts the classification parameter relative to the only feature of document patterns even though they are rotated or scaled, and also classifies them. With the complex logarithmic conformal mapping, the sample of the document pattern image makes the pattern image of the complex logarithmic plane. Because the power spectrum of this plane is invariant to the rotation, and scale of the pattern image, it is used as the characteristics parameter of the patten image. By using the coherence function, this method analyzes the standard and input power spectrum. additionally, it classifies the input pattern image. Even though input image is rotated, our algorithm can classify it without reference to the rotation, and this is possible when the scale is in the range of 0.5-1.5.

This paper presents design and performance improvement of a new digital tomosynthesis (DTS) system for object-detector synchronous rotation. Firstly, a new DTS system, called OSDR (Object-Detector Synchronous Rotation) is suggested and designed to acquire X-ray digital images. Secondly, the shape distortion of DTS images generated by an image intensifier is modeled. And a new synthesis algorithm, which overcomes the limitations of the existing synthesis algorithm, is suggested to improve the sharpness of the synthesized image. Also an artifact analysis of the DTS system is performed. Thirdly, some performance indices, which evaluate quantitatively performance improvement, are defined. And the experimental verification of the performance improvement is accomplished by the ODSR system newly designed. The advantages of the ODSR system are expressed quantitatively, compared with an existing system.

This paper reports a combined depth- and model-based face detection and tracking approach. The proposed algorithm consists of four functional modules; i) color-based candidate region extraction, ii) generation of the depth histogram for handling occlusion, iii) rotation-invariant face region detection using ellipse fitting, and iv) face tracking based on motion prediction. This technique solved the occlusion problem under complicated environment by detecting the face candidate region based on the depth-based histogram and skin colors. The angle of rotation was estimated by the ellipse fitting method in the detected candidate regions. The face region was finally determined by inversely rotating the candidate regions by the estimated angle using Haar-like features that were robustly trained robustly by the frontal face.
In order to retrieve the rotated image within database by the content based image retrieval system, the algorithms with rotation robustness is usually applied in the procedure of the feature extraction. In that case, it requires much calculation time for feature extraction and much indexed data for feature indexing. Thus. in this paper. we propose the rotation robust algorithm using the block variance of the projected vector. The algorithm does not require additional calculation for feature extraction and is executed within query time by comparing the extracted data. Proposed method can be processed through database including various size of images with shape information and executed with fast response time in implementation.

Amplitude-only logarithmic Radon transform (ALR transform) for pattern matching is proposed. This method provides robustness for object translation, scaling, and rotation. An ALR image is invariant even if objects are translated in a picture. For the object scaling and rotation, the ALR image is merely translated. The objects are identified using a phase-only matched filter to the ALR image. The ratio of size, the difference of rotation angle, and the position between the two objects are detected. Our pattern matching procedure is described, herein, and its simulation is executed. We compare matching scores with the Fourier-Mellin transform, and the general phase-only matched filter.

Zernike moments have been one of the most commonly used feature vectors for recognizing rotated patterns due to its rotation invariant characteristics. In order to reduce its expensive computational cost, several methods have been proposed to lower the complexity. One of the methods proposed by mukundan and K. R. Ramakrishnan[1], however, is not rotation invariant. In this paper, we propose another method that not only reduces the computational cost but preserves the rotation invariant characteristics. In the experiment, we compare our method with others, in terms of computing time and the accuracy of moment feature at different rotational angle of an object in image.

We propose a fast algorithm using Extreme Contour Point (ECP) to detect the angle of rotated images, is implemented by rotation feature of one covered frame image that can be applied to correct the rotated images like in image processing for real time applications, while CORDIC is inefficient to calculate various points like high definition image since it is only possible to detect rotated angle between one point and the other point. The two advantages of this algorithm, namely compatibility to images in preprocessing by using Sobel edge process for pattern recognition. While the other one is its simplicity for rotated angle detection with cyclic shift of two $1{\times}n$ matrix set without complexity in calculation compared with CORDIC algorithm. In ECP, the edge features of the sample image of gray scale were determined using the Sobel Edge Process. Then, it was subjected to binary code conversion of 0 or 1 with circular boundary to constitute the rotation in invariant conditions. The results were extracted to extreme points of the binary image. Its components expressed not just only the features of angle ${\theta}$ but also the square of radius $r^2$ from the origin of the image. The detected angle of this algorithm is limited only to an angle below 10 degrees but it is appropriate for real time application because it can process a 200 degree with an assumption 20 frames per second. ECP algorithm has an O ($n^2$) in Big O notation that improves the execution time about 7 times the performance if CORDIC algorithm is used.
This paper presents a method for designing circular template used in similarity measurement for image registration. Circular template has translation and rotation invariant property, which results in correct matching of control points for image registration under the condition of translation and rotation between reference and sensed images. Circular template consisting of the pixels located on the multiple circumferences of the circles whose radii vary from zero to a certain distance, is converted to two-dimensional Discrete Polar Coordinate Matrix (DPCM), whose elements are the pixels of the circular template. For sensed image, the same type of circular template and DPCM are created by rotating the circular template repeatedly by a certain degree in the range between 0 and 360 degrees and then similarity is calculated using mutual information of the two DPCMs. The best match is determined when the mutual information for each rotation angle at each pixel in search area is maximum. The proposed algorithm was tested using KOMPSAT-2 images acquired at two different times and the results indicate high accurate matching performance under image rotation.
