This paper proposes a new method to process panoramic image stitching using SURF(Speeded Up Robust Features). Panoramic image stitching is considered a problem of the correspondence matching. In computer vision, it is difficult to find corresponding points in variable environment where a scale, rotation, view point and illumination are changed. However, SURF algorithm have been widely used to solve the problem of the correspondence matching because it is faster than SIFT(Scale Invariant Feature Transform). In this work, we also describe an efficient approach to decreasing computation time through the homography estimation using RANSAC(random sample consensus). RANSAC is a robust estimation procedure that uses a minimal set of randomly sampled correspondences to estimate image transformation parameters. Experimental results show that our method is robust to rotation, zoom, Gaussian noise and illumination change of the input images and computation time is greatly reduced.
In this paper, an adaptive illumination change compensation method is proposed for multi-view video coding. In multi-view video, an illumination change can occur due to physically imperfect camera calibration, each different camera position and direction, and so on. These characteristics can cause a performance decrease in the multi-view video coding that uses an inter-view prediction by referring to the pictures obtained from the neighboring views. By using the proposed method, a compression ratio of the proposed method in the multi-view video coding is increased, and finally $0.1{\sim}0.6dB$ PSNR(Peak Signal-to-Noise Ratio) improvement was obtained compared with the case of not using the proposed method.

We present the framework for JND based Illumination and Color Restoration Using Edge-preserving filter for restoring distorted images taken under the arbitrary lighting conditions. The proposed method is effective for appropriate illumination compensation, vivid color restoration, artifacts suppression, automatic parameter estimation, and low computation cost for HW implementation. We show the efficiency of the mean shift filter and sigma filter for illumination compensation with small spread parameter while considering the processing time and removing the artifacts such as HALO and noise amplification. The suggested CRF (color restoration filter) can restore the natural color and correct color distortion artifact more perceptually compared with current solutions. For the automatic processing, the image statistics analysis finds suitable parameter using JND and all constants are pre-defined. We also introduce the ROI-based parameter estimation dealing with small shadow area against spacious well-exposed background in an image for the touch-screen camera. The object evaluation is performed by CMC, CIEde2000, PSNR, SSIM, and 3D CIELAB gamut with state-of-the-art research and existing commercial solutions.
A MVC (Multi-view Video Coding) method, which uses both an illumination change-adaptive ME (Motion Estimation)/DC (Motion Compensation) and a 2D (Dimensional) direct mode, is proposed. Firstly, a new SAD (Sum of Absolute Difference) measure for ME/MC is proposed to compensate the Luma pixel value changes for spatio-temporal motion vector prediction. Illumination change-adaptive (ICA) ME/MC uses the new SAD to improve both MV (Motion Vector) accuracy and bit saving. Secondly, The proposed 2D direct mode that can be used in inter-view prediction is an extended version of the temporal direct mode in MPEG-4 AVC. The proposed MVC method obtains approximately 0.8dB PSNR (Peak Signal-to-Noise Ratio) increment compared with the MPEG-4 AVC simulcast coding.

This paper proposes a new color constancy algorithm using the maximum luminance surface. This method uses a linear model which represents the characteristics of human visual system. The most important process of linear model is the estimation of the spectral distributions of illumination from an input image. To estimate of the spectral distributions of illumination from an input image, we first estimate spectral distribution functions of reflected light on the brightest surface. Then, we estimate surface reflectance functions corresponding to the maximum luminance surface using a principal component analysis of the given munsell chips. We finally estimate the spectral distributions of illumination in an image. Using an estimated illumination, we recover an image by scaling it regularly for the lightness calibration. From the experimental results, the proposed method was effective in recovering the color images compared with others.

Cast shadow caused by an illumination condition can produce troublesome effects for face recognition system using reflectance image. Consequently, we need to separate cast shadow area from feature area for improvement of recognition accuracy. A Bilateral filter smooths image while preserving edges, by means of a nonlinear combination of nearby pixel values. Processing such characteristics, this method is suited to our purpose in illumination estimation process based on Retinex. Therefore, in this paper, we propose a new illumination normalization method based on the Bilateral filter in face images. The proposed method produces a reflectance image that is preserved relatively exact cast shadow area, because coefficient of filter is designed to multiply proximity and discontinuity of pixels in input image. Performance of our method is measured by a recognition accuracy of principle component analysis(PCA) and evaluated to compare with other conventional illumination normalization methods.

We propose a novel high dynamic range (HDR) video synthesis algorithm using alternatively exposed low dynamic range (LDR) videos. We first develop a superpixel-based illumination invariant correspondence estimation algorithm. Then, we propose a reliability weight to further improve the quality of the synthesized HDR frame. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm provides high-quality HDR frames compared to conventional algorithms.
A method of estimating the pose of a three-dimensional object from a set of two-dimensioal images based on parametric eigenspace method is proposed. A Gaussian blurred edge image is used as an input image instead of the original image itself as has been used previously. The set of input images is compressed using K-L transformation. By comparing the estimation errors for the original, blurred original, edge, and blurred edge images, we show that blurring with the Gaussian function and the use of edge images enhance the data compression ratio and decrease the resulting from smoothing the trajectory in the parametric eigenspace, thereby allowing better pose estimation to be achieved than that obtainable using the original images as it is. The proposed method is shown to have improved efficiency, especially in cases with occlusion, position shift, and illumination variation. The results of the pose angle estimation show that the blurred edge image has the mean absolute errors of the pose angle in the measure of 4.09 degrees less for occlusion and 3.827 degrees less for position shift than that of the original image.
This paper presents a robust viewpoint estimation algorithm for Moving Parallax Barrier mobile 3D display in sudden illumination changes. We analyze the previous viewpoint estimation algorithm that consists of the Viola-Jones face detector and the feature tracking by the Optical-Flow. The sudden changes in illumination decreases the performance of the Optical-flow feature tracker. In order to solve the problem, we define a novel performance measure for the Optical-Flow tracker. The overall performance can be increased by the selective adoption of the Viola-Jones detector and the Optical-flow tracker depending on the performance measure. Various experimental results show the effectiveness of the proposed method.
Measuring spectral reflectance can be regarded as obtaining inherent color parameters, and spectral reflectance has been used in image processing. Model-based spectrum recovering, one of the method for obtaining spectral reflectance, uses ordinary camera with multiple illuminations. Conventional model-based methods allow to recover spectral reflectance efficiently by using only a few parameters, however it requires some parameters such as power spectrum of illuminations and spectrum sensitivity of camera. In this paper, we propose an enhanced model-based spectrum recovering method without pre-measured parameters: power spectrum of illuminations and spectrum sensitivity of camera. Instead of measuring each parameters, spectral reflectance can be efficiently recovered by estimating and using the spectrum characteristic matrix which contains spectrum parameters: basis function, power spectrum of illumination, and spectrum sensitivity of camera. The spectrum characteristic matrix can be easily estimated using captured images from scenes with color checker under multiple illuminations. Additionally, we suggest fast recovering method preserving positive constraint of spectrum by nonnegative basis function of spectral reflectance. Results of our method showed accurately reconstructed spectral reflectance and fast constrained estimation with unmeasured camera and illumination. As our method could be conducted conveniently, measuring spectral reflectance is expected to be widely used.
