  • The expression KES, one of the most commonly used words in the Korean language, has various usages. This expression is also used to express English-like cleft constructions. Korean seems to employ at least three different types of cleft constructions: predicational, identificational, and eventual. The paper tries to provide a constraint-based analysis of these three types of Korean cleft constructions and implement the analysis in the LKB(Linguistic Knowledge Building) system to check the feasibility of the analysis. In particular, the paper shows how a typed feature structure grammar, couched upon HPSG, can provide a robust basis for parsing Korean cleft constructions.

  • This research was intended to provide conceptual framework of clothing conformity by determining motivation types of clothing conformity and nonconformity, and their relation-ships. The responses of 714 fulltime employeed subjects from four different cities were analyzed. Business were was used as the situational stimulus. The literature study suggested three different motivation types of clothing conformity including Normative Conformity, Informational Conformity, and Identificational Conformity, and two different types of clothing nonconformity including Anticonformity and Independence. As the results of the empirical analysis, clothing conformity types were found to be Normative Conformity and Identificational Conformity. Clothing nonconformity types were found to be Anticonformity and Independence. Identificatinal Conformity correlated positively with Anticonformity and negatively with Independence, whereas Normative Conformity correlated negatively with Anticonformity and Independence.

  • The objectives of the thesis were to investigate the general trends of clothing conformity and clothing attitudes and to figure out the relationships between clothing conformity and clothing attitudes, and differences of clothing conformity and clothing attitudes between different genders and ages. The conformity includes clothing conformity by informational influence, by identificational influence, and by normative influence. And the clothing attitudes are fashion interests, pursuit of individuality, clothing importance. It was turned out that three types clothing conformity were closely related with variables of clothing attitudes(fashion interests, pursuit of individuality, clothing importance). Particularly, the clothing conformity by normative influence was negatively correlated with pursuit of individuality. And other clothing conformities were positively correlated with the variables of clothing attitudes. It was also turned out that school girls marked high points on the clothing conformity by informational influence and by identificational influence. Middle school students were influenced by identification idol. Most of middle and high school students were believed to recognize the importance of clothing, and they were pursueing both fashion and individuality simultaneously.

  • This study investigates the semantic and prosodic properties of the so-called contrastive topic. We posit two informational primitives, namely, topical feature [+-T] and focal feature [+-F], from which four different informational categories, i.e., [+T, +F], [+T, -F], [-T, +F], and [-T, -F], are yielded. It is proposed that the informational category of contrastive topic has focal property [+F] as well as topical property [+T]. Based on the semantic approach that regards the function of [+F] as identificational predication and that of [+T] as forming a semantic conditional clause, it is shown that the semantic function of contrastive topic, which is specified as [+T, +F], is the combination of these two functions, i.e., identificational predication in a semantic conditional clause. This is supported by a scrutinized exploration of the prosodic pattern of English contrastive topic.

  • Like English, Korean employs several complicated types of cleft constructions. This paper deals with two main types of Korean cleft constructions: predicational and identificational. It first reviews the formal properties of these two types and then provides a constraint-based analysis that can be computationally implemented. In particular, the paper assumes two types of noun KES (one as a common noun and the other as a bound noun) and treats the argument-gapped cleft clause similar to relative clauses while treating the adjunct-gapped cleft clause as a noun-complement construction. The paper further shows that the cleft constructions are closely linked to the copula constructions, sharing many common properties while having their own constructional constraints.

  • The purpose of this study was to identify reference groups and their characteristics that influence career people's clothing conformity. The responses of 714 fulltime employees subject from four different cities were analyzed. Business wear used as the stiuational stimulus. The Identificational Conformity was most influenced by friends or school seniors and juniors, followed by spuse or lover and siblings. The Normative Conformity was most influenced by spouse or lover, followed by supervisors, parents or elders, customers or business counterparts, and colleagues. And it was found that career people showed more Identificational Conformity and Normative Conformity to the reference groups which regulated their clothings, had credibility and had attractiveness.

  • The purpose of this research was to find out the most explainable variables influencing fashion leadership. This research was carried out by both the theoretical and empirical study. For the theoretical study, the research of fashion leadership was based on the fashion opinion leadership and innovativeness. The study included the analysis of variables influencing fashion leadership, such as clothing importance, clothing conformity, clothing anticonformity, perceived risk of clothing, use of fashion information source and demographic variables. For the empirical study, fashion leadership was measured by fashion opinion leadership and innovativeness. The variables influencing on the fashion leadership were measured by self-image, social participation, clothing behaviors(clothing importance, normative conformity, identificational conformity, clothing anticonformity, clothing independance), demographic variables(major fields of students, year of education, family income). Data were obtained from 335 female college and university students in Chung-Buk area by self-administered questionaire. The data collected through the questionaire were analyzed by the stastical thechique-stepwise regression. The results of the study were as follow: 44.6 percent of the total variance of fashion leadership was explained by the five variables: Clothing importance, use of marketer-dominated fashion information source, identificational conformity, traditional-modern self image and clothing anticonformity. Family income and the major fields of students are significantly related to the fashion leadership.

  • This study reviews (i) the (dis)advantages of two major semantic theories of focus, i.e., the Alternative Semantics (AS) and the Structured Meaning Theory (SM), and (ii) the hybrid analysis consisting of these two theories proposed by Krifka (2006). After pointing out a problem of this hibrid analysis, this study attempts to show the third alternative, i.e., the theory of identificational predication for focus can solve this problem.

  • This paper attempts to define various notions involving focus and topic found in Korean and also employs phonetic measures to verify the plausibility of those notions that are theoretically argued for. This paper crucially relies on Prince (1981) for the notion of familiarity and its pragmatic significance, and adopts Rooth's (1985) notion of alternative set and utilizes it in the light of pragmatic interpretation. The basic idea of this paper is to decompose the notion alternative set into finer-grained components and to assign various levels of familiarity to those finer components, thereby helping define different kinds of focus and topic according to the properties of those sub-components.
