  • Peste des petits ruminants (PPR) is considered to be one of the main constraints to enhancing the productivity of goats and sheep in regions where it is present and becoming endemic. PPR was recognized in Pakistan in early 1990s but got importance during the Participatory Disease Surveillance (PDS) of Rinderpest Eradication Campaign. Lot of research work has been initiated during last decade towards disease epidemiology, risk factor recognition, laboratory diagnosis, vaccination and demonstration of control strategies. Although there are ongoing projects working towards the progressive control of the disease in country yet there is need to have a national level control program for PPR. Also there is need to have comprehensive social economic surveys, disease hot spot recognition and identification of role of other species in disease transmission. With combined efforts of local and national authorities and political will, there is high likelihood that this devastating disease can be controlled and eventually eradicated in near future.

Identification and Pathogenicity of Neophysopella vitis Causing Rust Disease on Meliosma myriantha in Korea

  • Rust symptoms on Meliosma myriantha trees have been noticed during disease surveys in Korea since 2010, with a high disease incidence frequently surpassing 90%. The causal fungus of the rust disease was identified as Neophysopella vitis based on the morphological investigation and molecular sequence analysis of the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) and large subunit (LSU) rDNA regions. This is the first report of rust disease caused by N. vitis on M. myriantha in Korea. A pathogenicity assay proved that M. myriantha serves as the aecial host of N. vitis as spermogonia and aeciospores were produced, which can infect the two uredinial hosts, Boston ivy (Parthenocissus tricuspidata) and Virginia creeper (Parthenocissus quinquefolia).

Case Report : Brain Fog Treated by Bekhogainsam-tang (백호가인삼탕(白虎加人蔘湯)으로 호전된 브레인 포그(Brain fog) 1례 임상보고)

  • Objective: This study aimed to report the effect of Baekhogainsam-tang on brain fog. Methods: A 59-year-old female patient complained of brain fog and waking up frequently during the night. Based on the Shanghanlun disease pattern identification diagnostic system, the patient was treated with Baekhogainsam-tang. The result was evaluated using the score. Results: After administration of Baekhogainsam-tang for 45 days, the MFI score decreased from 89 to 40. The average number of instances of waking up during the night decreased from 3 to 1.5. Conclusions: Some cases of brain fog can be treated by Baekhogainsam-tang.

A Case Report of Hot Flashes Treated by Herbal Medicine Based on Shanghanlun Provision (『상한론(傷寒論)』 변병진단체계(辨病診斷體系)에 근거하여 한약 투여 후 호전된 일과성 열감 치험 1례)

  • Objectives: The purpose of this case is to report the effects of Baekho-tang based on Shanghanlun disease pattern identification diagnostic system. Methods : According to diagnostic system based on Shanghanlun provisions, the patient was diagnosed as Gwoleum-byung(厥陰病). Visual analogue scale was used to check the symptoms while the patient taking herbal medicine Baekho-tang for 12 weeks. Results : After taking Baekho-tang, Visual analogue scale in hot flashes markedly decreased 9 to 1. Conclusions : This paper shows an efficient result of using Baekho-tang based on Shanghanlun disease pattern identification diagnostic system. Further studies should be needed to validate the effects of Baekho-tang.

  • Objective : The purpose of this paper is to report the improvement of patient with dizziness treated by herb medication based on Shanghanlun disease pattern identification diagnostic system. Methods : According to 'Disease Pattern Identification Diagnostic System based on Shanghanlun Provisions', the patient diagnosed with Taeyang-byung, number 27 provision, and took Guizhieryuebiyi-tang herb medication 30 days. The changing symptom of dizziness was estimated by VAS(Visual Analogue Scale). Results : The VAS changed 10 to 0. Conclusions : On the number 27 provision of Shanghanlun, '弱' means lower body helplessness. This is the first case report treating the dizziness with Guizhieryuebiyi-tang in Korea.

  • 'Jeol Chung Yum' is a Chinese patent medicine, which is used for a disease of women peculiarity by extravasated blood, a kind of stagnation state of blood and of menstrual irregularity in Korea; This medicine consists of 10 kinds of powdery mixtures, and microscopic method can advantageously be used for identification as it requires only a small amount of specimens. In this paper, the effectiveness of this methods will be exemplified by the identification of the ingredients in 'Jeol Chung Yum' which contains 10 powdered crude drug ingredients.

  • Objective : The purpose of this study was to report the improvement in a patient with cystitis by a herbal medication based on Shanghanlun disease pattern identification diagnostic system (DPIDS). Methods : A patient was diagnosed with cystitis according to DPIDS. The patient was treated with Galgunhwangryunhwanggum-tang. Results : The symptoms of cystitis disappeared after treatment and did not recur after 4 months. Conclusions : The herbal medication Galgunhwangryunhwanggum-tang is effective in this case of cystitis.

  • Objective : This study aimed to report the improvement of one patient with arrhythmia treated using Bokryeonggyejibaekchulgamcho-tang based on the disease pattern identification diagnostic system (DPIDS) by Shanhanlun Provisions. Methods : The patient with arrhythmia was treated using Bokryeonggyejibaekchulgamcho -tang according to to Shanghanlun provisions. The results were evaluated using Modified European Heart Rhythm Association symptom scale (mEHRA). Results : After taking Bokryeonggyejibaekchulgamcho-tang for 257 days, mEHRA decreased from 3 to 1. Conclusions : The Administration of Bokryeonggyejibaekchulgamcho-tang to patient with arrhythmia, based on Shanhanlun DPIDS was effective.

Development of High-Accuracy Automatic Identification Algorithm for First and Second Heart Sounds Using Vascular Transit Time (혈관 통과 시간을 활용한 고정확도 제 1심음 및 제 2심음 자동식별 알고리즘 개발)

  • Identification and analysis of the first and second heart sounds(S1, S2) is the easiest way for cardiovascular disease prevention and early diagnosis. However, accurate identification is difficult because the heart sound includes organ movement, blood vortex, user experience, and noise influenced by subjective judgment. Therefore, an algorithm to automatically identify the S1 and S2 heart sounds based on blood vessel transit time(VTT) is presented in this paper. According to the experimental results of comparing the algorithm developed for S1 and S2 heart sound analysis with the conventional Shannon energy algorithm in 10 volunteers, it has been proven that the proposed algorithm can automatically identify S1 and S2 heart sounds with higher accuracy than existing algorithms.

Auditory Hallucination in Schizophrenia treated by Daeseunggi-tang : A Case Report (대승기탕(大承氣湯)으로 호전된 조현병 환청에 대한 증례 1례)

  • Objective : We report efficacy of Daeseunggi-tang on auditory hallucination in schizophrenia. From this, we can expect therapeutic possibility of herbal medicine chosen by 'A disease pattern identification diagnostic system based on Shanghanlun provisions' in schizophrenia. Methods : Daeseunggi-tang written in YangMyeong-JiWiByeong is applied to 31-year-old patient who diagnosed as schizophrenia and hospitalized for 3months taking antipsychotics. The patient was treated for a year. Results : Scores in Auditory Hallucination appended to PANSS and K-BDI were highly decreased. The patient takes no antipsychotics anymore for now. Conclusions : Auditory hallucination in Schizophrenia which needs antipsychotics can be managed by herbal medicine chosen by 'A disease pattern identification diagnostic system based on Shanghanlun provisions'.
