Objective : This study was designed to investigate the relation between the angiotensin converting enzyme(ACE) gene polymorphism and stroke in the Korean population. Methods : This study was carried out on 58 stroke patients who were hospitalized in the department of acupuncture & moxibustion, college of Oriental Medicine, Kyung-Hee University and 61 healthy control subjects. Blood samples from all subjects were obtaind for DNA extration. The extracted DNA was amplified by polymerase chain reaction(PCR). PCR products were visualized by 2% agarose gel electrophoresis. Results : The sub-genotypes of ACE gene were II homozygotes, ID heterozygotes, DD homozygotes. While the distribution of ACE polymorphism in control subjects was 31%, 51%, 18%, the distribution of it in stoke patients was 33%, 52%, 16%(II, ID, DD). Thus, there was no significant different between the control and stroke groups. Conclusions : we conclude that there is no significant association between ACE gene polymorphism and storke in Korean papulation. However, the findings of this study need to be confirmed in large patients and further studies. Additional epidemiologicallly based studies of the effects and relationship between ACE or other genes and lifesyles with regard to stroke required.
Acetaminophen (N-acetyl-p-aminophenol) is one of the most popular analgesic and antipyretic drugs. An isotope dilution mass spectrometric method based on LC/MS was developed as a candidate reference method for the accurate determination of acetaminophen in pharmaceutical product. After spiking an isotope labeled acetaminophen (acetyl-$^{13}C_2$, $^{15}N$-acetaminophen) as an internal standard, tablet extracts were analyzed by LC/MS in a selected reaction monitoring (SRM) mode to detect ions at m/z $152{\rightarrow}110$ and m/z $155{\rightarrow}111$ for acetaminophen and acetyl-$^{13}C_2$, $^{15}N$-acetaminophen, respectively. The repeatability and reproducibility of the developed ID/LC-MS method were tested for the validation and assessment of metrological quality of the method.
Recently it was reported that Insertion/Deletion polymorphism in the gene coding for Angiotensin-Converting Enzyme (ACE) is associated with human capacity for physical performance. This study was performed to genotyping of the ACE gene to determine the correlation between elite endurance performance and ACE I/D gene polymorphism. DNA sample was obtained from peripheral blood, hair roots and mouth epithelial cell in 739 general population and 200 elite athletic performance students. The ACE gene was amplified by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) using allele specific oligonucleotide primers. 155, 525 bp and 237 bp PCR products indicating the presence of insertion(I) and deletion(D) alleles, respectively, were clearly resolved after electrophoresis on a 2% agarose gel with ethidium bromide. Of the 200 elite athletic performance population subjects, 68(34%) showed ACE genotype 11,100(50%) genotype ID and 32(16%) genotype DD. Of the 739 general population subjects, 259(35.1%) showed ACE genotype 11,363(49.1%) genotype ID and 117(15.8%) genotype DD. Therefore ACE I/D gene polymorphism was not associated with human capacity for physical performance.(p>0.05)
1,3-Dimethyllumazine derivatives were synthesized by using Timmis reaction. The reaction of 4-amino-1,3-dimethyl-5-nitrosouracil(1) with 2,4-pentanedione, ethyl cyanoacetate, and ethyl acetoacetate provided 6-acetyl-1,3,7-trimethyllumazine (2), ethyl 7-amino-1,3-dimethyllumazine-6-carboxylate (4), and ethyl 1,3,7-trimethyllumazine-6-carboxylate (5) in good yieId, respectively. The various 1,3-dimethyllumazine derivatives were prepared from the side chain reactions of 6-acetyl and ester group in compound 2,4, and 5. The structure and physical properties of obtained compounds were characterized NMR, UV, IR spectrum, and elementary analysis.

Triple negative breast cancer (TNBC) is an aggressive subtype of breast cancer (BC) with higher metastatic rate and both local and systemic recurrence compared to non-TNBC. The generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) secondary to oxidative stress is associated with DNA damage, chromosomal degradation and alterations of both hypermethylation and hypomethylation of DNA. This study concerns differential methylation of promoter regions in specific groups of genes in TNBC and non-TNBC Saudi females in an effort to understand whether epigenetic events might be involved in breast carcinogenesis, and whether they might be used as markers for Saudi BCs. Methylation of glutathione S-transferase P1 (GSTP1), T-cadherin (CDH13), Paired box protein 5 (PAX5), death associated protein kinase (DAPK), twist-related protein (TWIST), DNA-binding protein inhibitor (ID4), High In Normal-1 (HIN-1), cyclin-dependent kinase inhibitor 2A (p16), cyclin D2 and retinoic acid receptor-${\beta}$ ($RAR{\beta}1$) genes was analyzed by methylation specific polymerase chain reaction (MSP) in 200 archival formalin-fixed paraffin embedded BC tissues divided into 3 groups; benign breast tissues (20), TNBC (80) and non-TNBC (100). The relationships between methylation status, and clinical and pathological characteristics of patients and tumors were assessed. Higher frequencies of GSTP1, ID4, TWIST, DAPK, PAX5 and HIN-1 hypermethylation were found in TNBC than in non-TNBC. Hypermethylation of GSTP1, CDH13, ID4, DAPK, HIN-1 and PAX5 increased with tumor grade increasing. Other statistically significant correlations were identified with studied genes. Data from this study suggest that increased hypermethylation of GSTP1, ID4, TWIST, DAPK, PAX5 and HIN-1 genes in TNBC than in non-TNBC can act as useful biomarker for BCs in the Saudi population. The higher frequency of specific hypermethylated genes paralleling tumor grade, size and lymph node involvement suggests contributions to breast cancer initiation and progression.
Kinetic studies and theoretical investigations were made to illustrate the mechanism of the aquation of cis-[Co(en)$_2$YCl]$^{r+}$ (Y = NH$_3$, NO$_2^-$, NCS$^-$, $H_2O$) in $Hg^{2+}$ aqueous solution UV/vis-spectrophotometrically. The aquation of cis-[Co(en)$_2$YCl]$^{r+}$ have been found to be the second order for overall reaction as first order for each of substrate and Hg$^{2+}$+ catalyst. The reaction rate was increased in the order of Y=NH$_3$ < NCS$^-$- < $H_2O$ < $NO_2^-$, which are neighboring group of Cl. The step of bond formation was found to be the rate determining one, because the net charge of central metal ion run parallel with the observed rate constant. On the basis of rate determining step, kinetic data and the observed activation parameters, we have proposed the Id mechanism for the reaction system. The rate equation derived from the proposed mechanism has been in agreement with the observed rate equation.
Effects of $Ca(OH)_2$ concentration (0.16~0.64 wt%), surfactant concentration (2~16 wt%), total volumetric flow rate (3~6 L/min) and $CO_2$ volume fraction $(0.3{\sim}0.6)$ on morphology, crystal structure, mean particle diameter, aggregation and specific surface area of the precipitated $CaCO_3$ were investigated in the slurry bubble column reactor. Experiments were carried out in acrylic reactor ($0.11\;m-ID{\times}1.0\;m-high$) with a internal tube ($0.04\;m-ID{\times}1.0\;m-high$h). The reaction time of $CaCO_3$ synthesis decreased with adding Dispex N40 of the anionic surfactant. The reaction rate of $Ca(OH)_2$ increased with increasing the volumetric flow rate of $CO_2$. From SEM images, the single crystal of $CaCO_3$ increased with increasing the reaction rate in the saturated concentration of $Ca(OH)_2$ (0.16 wt %) and the concentration of Dispex N40 (2 wt%). The mean particle size of $CaCO_3$ varied with adding Dispex N40. In addition, the specific surface area of $CaCO_3$ increased with adding of surfactant (2 wt%) from $35m^2/g$ to $44m^2/g$ at the volumetric flow rate of $CO_2$ (0.9 L/min) and the concentration of $Ca(OH)_2$(0.64 wt %).
A kinetic study was made to determine the mechanism of the aquation of $cis-[Co(en)_2(NH_3)Cl]^{2+}\;in\;Hg^{2+}$ aqueous solution. The progress of reaction was followed UV/vis-spectrophotometrically by a measurement of the absorbance at a specific wave length (530nm) of $cis-[Co(en)_2(NH_3)Cl]^{2+}$ as a function of time. The experimental results have shown that the reaction rate is dependent upon the concentration of $Hg^{2+}$ that act as a catalyst. And it was found that the overall reaction proceed with second order, first order with respect to Co(III) complex and $Hg^{2+}$. Activation parameters, ${\Delta}H^{\neq}\;and\;{\Delta}S^{\neq}$, were obtained as 12.9 kcal/mol and -19.3 e.u., respectively. We have proposed a plausible reaction mechanism which is consistent with the observed rate equation.
We fabricated hexagonal copper sulfide $Cu_2S$ nanowires to obtain a larger contact area of $Cu_2S/CdS$ solar cell. Copper sulfide nanowires were grown on Cu foil at room temperature by gas-sol id reaction. The size, density and shape of nanowires seemed to be affected by the change or reaction time temperature, crystallographic orientation of Cu foil, and molar ratio of the mixed gas. We controled the length and the diameter of the nanowires and we obtained suitable nanowire arrays which has fitting size for uniform deposition with n-type CdS. CdS layer was deposited on the nanowire array by electrodeposition and it seemed to be uniform. The $Cu_2S/CdS$ nanowires/CdS junction showed diode characteristics, A large contact area is expected with the $Cu_2S/CdS$ nanowire structure as compared with the $Cu_2S/CdS$ thin film.
In order to study the reaction behavior of bovine holo- and apo-$\alpha$-lactalbumin ($\alpha$-La) during heat treatment at 65~10$0^{\circ}C$, the samples were analysed by first (ID)-and second-dimensional (2D) native-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (Native-PAGE) and sodium dodecylsulfate (SDS)-PAGE. When bolo-$\alpha$-La or apo- $\alpha$ -La were heated, they formed non-native, monomers, dimers and trimers. The apo-$\alpha$-La was more heat-sensitive than holo-$\alpha$-La. The monomers seemed to have the same composition as the native $\alpha$-La, but many of the disulfide bonds could be non-native.
