Lactic acid is of interest as the raw materials of polyactide that is a biodegradable polymer. For an effective purification of acid, batch distillation with the simultaneous reactions was used. Two Oldershow colums and reboilers were usde for fractionation of methanol and reactions. Two Oldershaw columns and reboilers were used for fractionation of methanol and reactions. Esterification reaction of lactic with methanol produced methyllactate and water. The productes of the esterification reaction, methl lactate and water were transported to the reboiler of the reproysis part. In hydroduced in the hydrolysis part and nureacter method lactic acid and methanol. Methanol produced in the hydroysis part and unreacted method lactic acid and methanol in the esterification part were separated by distillation and recycled to the revoiler of the esterification part so that the esterification reaction would be stimulated. Thus, pure lactic acid solution remained in the reboiler of the hydroysis part. The effect of the number of stages in column on the recovery yield was also inverstigated. In the operation with colums improved the fractionation of componets and stimulated the reactions in two parts.

Rice Straw was delignified by autoclaving with 1% NaOH solution at $121^{\circ}C$ for one hour and was disintegrated by a Wiley mill to 60 mesh. This substrate was saccharified with cellulase produced by Trichoderma viride T04 in solid culture me-dium. The rate and extent of hydrolysis were both increased when high enzyme concentration and low substrate concentration were employed. The original cellulose was treated with 0.19 FPA unit for three hours and followed by the second treatment for the same period with the same concentration of enzyme after washing. By doing this the hydrolysis rate at the second stage could increase four folds of that unwashed. The same experiment with 0.32 FPA unit yielded two folds suggesting an end-product inhibition on the recaction system. The extent of hydrolysis however, could not be in-creased by this process.
This study was carried out to examine degradation characteristics of microalgae Chlorella vulgaris in methane fermentation. We measured COD and VS reduction, gas and methane productivity, VFA (volatile fatty acid), respectively. Then we calculated material balance and hydrolysis rates in soluble and solid material. The substrate concentration was controlled from 14 gCOD$_{cr}$/l to 64 gCOD$_{cr}$/l in batch cultures, and HRT (hydraulic retention time) controlled from 2 days to 30 days in continuous experi- ments. The results were as follows. In batch culture, accumulated gas productivity increased with the increase of the substrate concentration. The SS and VSS was removed all about 30% increase of substrate concentration and the most of the degradable material removed during the first 10 days. The curve of gas and methane production rate straightly increased until substrate concentration is 26 gCOD$_{cr}$/l. In continuous culture experiments, the removal rates at HRT 10days were 20% for total COD and TOC, respectively. At longer HRT, there was no increase in the removal efficiency. At HRT 15 days, the removal rates were 30% for SS and VSS, respectively. Soluble organic materials were rapidly degraded, and so there was no accumulated. Soluble COD concentration was not increase regardless of HRT-increasing. That meaned the hydrolysis was one of the rate-limiting stage of methane fermentation. The first-order rate constants of hydrolysis were 0.23-0.28 day$^{-1}$ for VSS, and 0.07-0.08 day$^{-1}$ for COD.

Heteropoly acid(HPW) catalysts supported on three different carriers, an amorphous silica, MCM-41 and MCM-48, with different loadings and calcination temperatures have been prepared and characterized by X-ray diffraction, nitrogen physorption, infrared spectroscopy, and $^{31}P$ magic angle spinning NMR. From the result of IR and NMR, it was shown that HPW retains the Keggin structure on the supported catalysts. No HPW crystal phase was developed even at HPW loadings as high as 35 wt % on the MCM-41 and 65 wt % MCM-48. Thus, HPW appeared to form finely dispersed species. In the hydrolysis reaction of di, bis, tri-pentaerythritol, HPW/MCM-41, 48 exhibited higher catalytic activity than $HPW/SiO_2$ or HPW.
Enzymatic resolution reactions were investigated using Candida rugosa lipase for the production of potically pure S-(+)-Ketoprofen. When the enzymatic hydroysis (and esterification) of recemic ketoprofen esters (and recemic ketoprofen with alcohol) was investigated comparatively, aqueous media was more specific for S-enantiomer than organic media. In the enzymatic hydrolysis of racemic ketoprofen ethyl ester in aqueous media, optimal temperature and pH for enantioselectivity were $37^{\circ}C$ and 4, respectively. The stereoselectivity of the enzyme was enhanced by adding dialcohols such as ethylene glycol and propylene glycol. The enantiomeric ratio obtained in the 40 %(v/v) ethylene glycol was 2-fold higher than that without the additive. By adding $CH_2Cl_2$, $CHCl_3$ and $CCl_4$ (5%,v/v), the enantioselectivity was reversed. A dramatic increase in the stereoselectivity was achieved using lipase purified by anion exchange chromatography. The type A lipase(the first eluted lipase fraction) showed an enantiomeric ratio of >100, whereas the type B lipase(the second eluted lipase fraction) exhibited enantimomer ratio of 9.0 in the hydrolysis of racemic ketoprofen ethyl ester.
This experiment was carried out to study changes in solubility and emulsifying properties of whey protein. Whey protein hydrolysates were obtained from tryptic hydrolysis of whey protein concentrate at pH 8.0 and 37$^{\circ}C$ for 6 hours. Emulsifying activity of whey protein hydrolysate was highest at 4 hours of hydroysis and at 5.50% of DH. During hydrolysis of whey protein concentrate with trypsin, ${\alpha}$-lactalbumin was not easily broken down. But ${\beta}$-lactoglobulin was hydrolysed rapidly from the early stage of hydrolysis, producing several low molecular weight peptides, which have to participate in increasing emusifying activity. The solulbility of hydyolysates tended to increase depending on hydrolysis time; however, there was a gradual decrease after 5 hours. The hydrolysate had a minimum solubility near the isoelectric point range (pH 4∼5). The more hydrolysed the whey protein concentrates, the more soluble they are near the pl. They aye also more soluble above pH 6. Emulsifying activity of hydrolysates showed similar results to solubility. Creaming stability gradually increased when hydrolysis increased, increasing rapidly above pH 8 after 4 hours of hydrolysis.
The effects of P2O5-doped on the surface of MgO particles on hydrolysis, water repellency, and insulation behavior were investigated. P2O5-doped MgO has exhibited a unique electrical property, which is significant insulation behavior due to both the suppression of the hydrolysis reaction by P2O5 and water repellency. Therefore, the insulation behavior was inversely proportional to the hydrophilicity and the Mg(OH)2 and OH-charge transfer ratio by the surface hydration reaction of MgO. The insulation of MgO according to aging was strongly influenced by the surface hydration reaction, the band gap of the added dopant species, and the hydrophilicity and hydrophobicity of the dopant. Finally, it was to show electrical insulation by inhibiting the surface hydration reaction of the hydrophilic MgO, which has a great potential for use in heat transfer medium applications.
